I always get so excited when this little makeup bag arrives! I trust the curation and quality of the brands that I have come to know and love from So Susan. This month looked to be filled with lots of makeup, my favorite!

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

This month came with an information sheet on the featured items. Always helpful when I first start digging into the products. Let's see what September brought us!

What's Inside The Bag

So Susan Limited-Edition Makeup Bag, September 2021 - Retail Value $12

This month's bag says "I Am My Own Muse". I am really into this bag, and surprisingly, the quote! I am a big Marianne Faithfull fan who has been vocal about women being labeled as a muse to a male musician and how it isn't all that glamorous. So I think this quote is right along with that thinking that we all can be our own muse! I love the bold red and the fun old-school cartoon design.

Jelly Pong Pong Cosmetics Paraides Pigments Lip/Cheek Cream in Fig Jam - Retail Value $19.95

When I opened this lip and cheek cream I was not excited, it looked so pink. Like almost too bright hot pink to work. I was wrong. This highly pigmented cream is super hydrating and leaves you with this amazing pink shade. A little goes a long way so start with a small dab. I did try this on my cheeks and it was a big no, but on my lips it is perfection. This cream is made with pumpkin seed oil and rhubarb extract to give you a lush finish. I love this look with the bold lip and a light eye, it is perfect for an easy yet bold look.

Trifle Cosmetics Atlantis Cookie Prismatic Highlighter - Retail Value $12.00

I don't love highlighters so I am really picky when I try a new one. This one was just ok for me. It didn't really show up that well on my cheeks, even in nice sunlight, and I felt that I needed to use a lot to see it at all. This highlighter has a pink coral base to give you a light prismatic pigment that shines. This is made with sesame seed oil and star fruit extract to nourish your skin and give it that glow. Since I have a lot of highlighters, I decided to pass this along to my niece who is newly venturing into a more detailed makeup look.

Trifle Cosmetics Angel Cake Divine Glow Enhancing Palette - Retail Value $21.00

Much like the lip cream, I was not excited to see this palette. The colors are way out of my comfort zone and the cream texture reminded me of something I would have used in middle school. I went for the pink shade since it looked the easiest to apply without looking like I had a ton of shimmery shadow on (I was getting ready for kindergarten drop-off so I didn't want to be too over the top). I was so blown away by the easy application and the light, almost makeup-less look that this shadow gave me. And then when I went back to read more about the product, I realized that this palette is meant to be used as a highlight or blush, hahaha, I couldn't believe it. So I'm not sure if this is ok to use as a shadow, but I really loved it that way! I think for me, using these shades as a blush or highlight would be way too over the top. I could see it being super fun and cool for a night out look if I was a bit younger and cooler.

Each of the creamy colors is a light-refracting shade that gives you a complexion-boosting radiance. The palette is made to hydrate and give your skin a boost of antioxidants with the help of sugar maple extracts, wild strawberry, and cocoa butter. This was such a fun and unique product for me to try, even though I used it incorrectly!

So Susan Cosmetics Hera Mist - Retail Value $42.00

This mist is made with menthol to help relieve an itchy, irritated, flaky scalp and reduces oil imbalance to leave your scalp feeling clean and argan oil to stimulate follicle growth and promote softer, stronger, shinier hair with reduced frizz. You can apply it to clean hair from root to end, gently massage it into the scalp, and then style as usual to relieve itching and stimulate hair growth. I didn't love the way this mist worked with my hair. It left me feeling a bit greasy and heavy and just didn't seem to mix well with my other hair products. I tried to use the mist on dry dirty hair at night before bed, but it didn't seem to really sink into my scalp or hair, it just dripped down. I just wasn't too blown away by this product, it felt a bit clunky to use and just didn't work well with my specific hair type.

Verdict

This month's So Susan Color Curate was filled with some hits and misses for me! I will say, while I loved the products, it didn't feel like a September box to me personally, it all had a big summer vibe that I wish I would have gotten these products in July. The lip cream is the perfect easy summer lip that I would have used even on my pool days because it felt so fresh and hydrating. The highlighter didn't blow me away, but I can't say that most do, so I decided to pass this along to my niece who I know will get a lot of use out of it. The palette was amazing until I realized it is a blush or highlight, but I used it as an eyeshadow. As an eyeshadow, I thought the colors were lovely, it went on really well, and gave me that makeup-less look while still feeling super put together. I can't see myself using this palette as a blush or highlight, but I might still use it as a shadow even though that is not what is it made for specifically. I will say that I was bummed to see two highlighters in one box which I know has happened in previous month and just feels redundant. The hair mist was not a favorite for me personally, it didn't work well with my hair and just felt like a clunky application process. I am going to pass it along to my neighbor that has short straight hair and really is hoping it will help with her hair growth. I always love discovering new products, but I also love that this box brings such high-quality products that if they don't work for me I know I can confidently pass them along to friends or family who I know will enjoy them!

Great review, Taryn! The lip color is so pretty and I also like the bag and quote. Based on the pics, I thought the palette was for eyeshadow too, so I say keep using it like that if it works for you. The colors are pretty, but definitely feel springy to me.
