Kiwi Crate is a subscription box for kids ages 5-8 from the parent company KiwiCo. It arrives every month with all the materials and instructions needed to complete 2-3 crafts centered on a theme, plus additional materials to help educate young learners!

This review is of KiwiCo's Kiwi Crate (for ages 5-8), which costs $19.95 per month.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

We have just started our homeschooling year and I thought this box on muscles would be such a great way to start the year! Learning about our bodies and what they can do can be so empowering and I knew my kids would be excited about the activities inside. We actually ended up with two of the same box, so my son and my daughter were each able to complete their own projects alongside one another. Read on to see the fun we had!

What's Inside This Box

This booklet highlights our theme for the month and it includes colorful, detailed illustrations to go along with our easy-to-follow instructions. It looks like this month we have two different main projects. On the back of the booklet, they include their social media links and a sticker for this month’s project.

This is the little sticker chart we received in our first Kiwi Crate along with our welcome note that we can add our sticker to.

Our Kiwi Explore! magazine is always a nice bonus complete with a comic and some extra activities that really enhance our lessons each month! It's educational and full of fun and useful activities for us to try.

Activity 1: Kicking Athlete

The first activity was to make a kicking athlete. They provided a ton of sturdy wooden pieces, some plastic nuts, bolts, and rubber bands along with some tape and little paper pieces to decorate our athletes with.

We followed the directions to layer our athlete's pieces together. First, we added some bolts then the green foam piece followed by the body piece, and then added the legs using a dowel and some small rubber bands.

Then it was just a matter of adding a few more pieces and some well-placed rubber bands so that our athletes were able to kick.

The last step was to color in the faces and add those to the body along with our jerseys. They also provided some tape so we could add some stripes to them as well.

Here are our finished athletes with their soccer balls. I love that we were able to turn our boxes into goals by just cutting the lid off.

To operate it, you just pull the ring back and the leg is able to kick the ball.

Since we had two boxes, they were able to play a round of soccer with their athletes!

Activity 2: Bow and Arrow

Kicking Athletes were fun enough, but then we also got to make a bow and arrow!

First, we put the bow together using some bolts and wooden pieces for the main part.

Then we used the pipe cleaner they provided to pull the rubber band through the tube connector and stretched the rubber band around the ends of the bow. We added foam pieces to hold it in place and then also added some to the bow.

Then we put together our arrows and used the tape to decorate everything. Then it was time to set up our cups for a target.

Here are our finished bows and arrows. Swipe to see how the arrow gets loaded in!

Next up was to take aim!

The kids had some fun testing this one out!

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $19.95

We had so much fun and learned all about skeletal and smooth muscles this month. Considering we were able to turn this into a school lesson complete with two fun projects to play with, I think that's a pretty great value for this $19.95 box!

Key Takeaways

I love that KiwiCo is able to combine learning with such fun experiences. It definitely makes the lessons more memorable. The box is well organized, the instructions are easy to follow and everything is so engaging for kids. In addition to learning about our muscles, we also got to use our muscles in real-life applications that were incredibly fun!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
