Universal Yums “Greece” Review

Can anyone else believe how fast the summer is flying by? I feel like school just ended and I'm already being bombarded with "Back to School" ads everywhere I look. While we always enjoy diving into our Universal Yums box, for some reason immersing ourselves in it during the summer months is just a little more spectacular. Is it the fact that we get to munch our way through a new country on a picnic blanket with garden views? Possibly, and I intend to take advantage of the few I have left before those *gasp* snowflakes start flying! How did our tour through Greece go do you ask? Read below to find out!

Every month we receive a brightly illustrated map that usually shows where our Yums are coming from. This month's map of Greece included fun facts and trivia about Corfu, Florine, Veria, Athens, Crete, and Samos. On the opposing side, we have the "Yum Scoreboard," which includes a list of the box's treats and an area for you to score each of them. We also received some info suggesting Yums from the Yum Shop based on items you may have loved from this box. Again, we didn't get a clue for our next box, but we did get to complete a fun scavenger hunt.

While the snacks are definitely where it is at. I do appreciate all of the information packed into this awesome pamphlet. While it includes necessary things like nutritional information and allergy warnings, it also includes trivia, recipes, and myth-matching. My family loves flipping through this pamphlet for the background info on each of our snacks. It makes for an educational and tasty experience!

Almond Baklava - Buy a pack of 3 for $5.10

I have never met a baklava that I didn't like...that is until now. Flaky is the word used to describe this dessert in typical fashion, but as soon as I opened this package I was greeted with a soggy, sticky mess. Not only had the filling melted out of the pastry, but it was covering the entire inner wrapping. I did give it a taste, but it was so soggy and gooey that I had to throw it away. I'm not sure if being exposed to heat during the shipping process caused this effect or if this is how it was meant to be, but I just wasn't a fan.

Roasted Garlic Bread Chips - Buy a pack of 3 for $4.80

Garlic is one of my top favorite flavors, and boy do these bread chips deliver! While my husband may not kiss me for a week with the breath these suckers gave me, they are totally delicious! Crunchy, salty, and smothered in garlic, these chips are yummy by themselves, but also a great addition to a salad or Chex mix recipe. Don't tell my hubby, but I'm definitely ordering more of these!

Peanut & Hazelnut Puffs - Buy a pack of 3 for $5.70

If you have read my reviews in the past, you know I am a sucker for all things peanut and hazelnut, so I was excited to give these corn puffs a try. Looking rather bland, I wasn't sure what to expect flavor-wise, but I was pleasantly surprised. Being of ample size, these corn puffs were crunchy, yet chewy, with a subtle peanut butter and hazelnut flavor. Though the flavor was light, I enjoyed these puffs with a glass of milk and found them to be a pleasant and satisfying snack.

Almond Milk Toffees - Buy a pack of 3 for $4.50

I have taste tested quite a few toffees in my day, and I have to say, these almond milk ones are fantastic. Creamy, rich, and soft, these are exactly what I think of when I think toffee. The almond flavoring is absolutely perfect, giving a sweet treat a savory note that curbs both my sweet and salty cravings. Looks like I've got another item to add to my cart!

Pomegranate Jelly Candy - Buy a pack of 3 for $4.20

When I think of jelly candies, my mind goes back to my grandma's glass candy jar filled with the infamous orange slices. By the time we got to the ones in the bottom, they were hardened bits of sugar, but still a tasty treat. These pomegranate jellies remind me of a very sophisticated version of that. With their beautiful mauve color and sweet yet tart flavor, I could hardly stop myself from eating all four at one sitting! Did I mention these were also super soft too? What a score!

Paprika &  Tomato Potato Chips - Buy a pack of 4 for $4.00

In general, I don't like ketchup, so when I see a tomato on packaging like this, I have my doubts. These ridged chips were more smoky than tomatoey, and were absolutely delicious! I enjoyed the fresh garden taste and was impressed with the sweet notes included. The kids were also fans, making this Yum one the entire family enjoyed.

Grape Must Moustokouloura Cookie - Buy a pack of 6 for $5.40

Back in 2019, I had the opportunity to give this grape must cookie a try, and my sentiments are about the same. Made from grape "must" (the thick mixture made up of the freshly pressed juice, skins, seeds, and stems of the grape) this cookie has a definite musty flavor that a wine lover might enjoy. I found the cookie to be very dense and crumbly and just not that good. My kids each took a bite and their faces said it all....this just wasn't our favorite.

Drizzled Milk Chocolate Wafer - Buy a pack of 10 for $5.00

I love me a Kit-Kat bar, and this is Greece's version of just that. Packed with five layers, this chocolate wafer is drizzled with a fancy line of dark chocolate equaling a very tasty treat. This was the only chocolate snack for the month, so you can be sure I savored it as long as possible....about one minute!

Prickly Pear Turkish Delight - Buy a single pack for $4.40

Soft, chewy, and sweet are the three words that come to mind while diving into this box of handmade prickly pear delights. Beautiful and abundant in quantity, we enjoyed them via our "fancy" cups and saucers with a spot of coffee and a book of poetry. The kids enjoyed these, as did I, though we discovered one cube of sweetness went a long way!

Almond Kourabiedes Cookies - Buy a pack of 2 for $7.20

Last but not least we tried out the almond cookies. These shortbread cookies are popular during Christmas time in Greece, but I decided I'd eat them anytime here! Large and crumbly, these powder sugar-coated cookies are messy as heck, but very much worth it. I loved the large chunks of almonds scattered throughout the dough and found the best place to eat these is over the kitchen sink. The kids thought they were only okay, but I really enjoyed them.

The Verdict: The Greece Universal Yums box was pretty tasty this month. We enjoyed more treats than we disliked which I always consider a win, but I was a little disappointed in the lack of treats. Like last month, we only received 10 different treats to try, when we usually receive at least 13. I know the almond cookie and prickly pear delight boxes were a bit larger in size, but I don't feel they were so large that they couldn't send a few more items. I hope this isn't the new norm! What did you think?

Scorecard Picks:

  • Best Yum: Drizzled Milk Chocolate Wafer
  • Runner-up: Almond Kourabiedes Cookies
  • Worst Yum: Almond Baklava
  • Most Unusual: Grape Must Moustokouloura Cookie

I really enjoyed the peach flavored jellies. They were even better than the pomegranate

I absolutely LOVED the baklava!! So much so that I will probably order more in the future. The almond toffees were one of the greatest things I’ve ever tasted in my life. The grape cookie was my least favorite (a bit dry), but I still ate it as I’m no quitter. Overall an excellent box 🙂

My baklava were the same way. I enjoyed everything else. Not my favourite box, but not the worst by any means.
No coffee or licorice flavoured items, means I ate everything.

Between the prickly pear candies and the almond cookies, this box was a bit much for me in the powdered sugar department. Oh, and agree about the Baklava – I made the mistake of opening it at my desk for a little afternoon pick me up. It didn’t occur to me that it would leak all over, but I ended up having to clean up the syrupy liquid (that leaked immediately upon opening the package) on my laptop. I tasted it (over the sink because of continued dripping… not the ideal way to enjoy a snack) but it was much too mushy to enjoy.

Those Frugelli gummies were sooo good. Most favorite item of the box by far!
