BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs.

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the medium size, which is recommended for dogs 20-50 lbs. Our beloved rescue dog, Rufus, is around 40 lbs. and is 12 years old. He can be a bit picky about toys but usually loves treats.

If you have a younger pup or just one who needs toys of the rough and tumble variety, I highly recommend trying the Super Chewer subscription (read our reviews to learn more!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

June 2021 BarkBox "Squeak Away Camp Box" Review

The June 2021 box included 3 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary for everyone once in a while.

Sometimes, these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.

Pur Luv Duck Stick, 2 sticks

These sticks are made with real duck, chickpea, tapioca starch, coconut glycerin, vegetable gelatin, and more. It is made without corn, soy, and wheat which I really appreciate. These treats can be given in small pieces as a snack to enjoy or all at once broken up, just be sure to monitor your dog since this is bigger and chewy. Rufus is hit or miss on these treats for some reason. He didn't like them at first one month, then the next time we got them he loved them, and then this month he was off of them again. I left it out to see if he would come back to it, but by the evening he still hadn't touched it. I am going to pass the other stick onto my Mom because her oldest dog loves them!

Bark Swimmy Jerky Bars, 3 oz.

The food that we feed Rufus daily has a top ingredient of salmon. He loves it and it is so good for him so I knew he was going to love this treat. I was right! He gobbled one little bar down instantly and was begging my son Fox to give him more. This resealable bag is so great to have on hand when we are trying to get Rufus to go outside in the rain, to come back inside, or if we need to get him to move to a different room for some reason. These treats are grain-free and are made with 60% USA salmon. The bars are bite-sized and chewy so I was able to comfortably give Rufus the whole thing.

Bark Eats Clucky Yummies, 4 oz.

Rufus is always so weird about little biscuits like this. They are crunchy so I don't know if it is the texture for him, but he will sort of play with it and then eat it very slowly or not at all. This treat has all of the things he loves though, farm-raised chicken and sweet potato. He just wasn't feeling these. We decided to give these to my Mom since they are the perfect size for her puppy.

Begging for S'more

Nothing screams summer and camping more than a s'more! This toy is so cute and looks good enough to eat. The little marshmallow section is a bungee, making it great for fetch or tug of war. It also has a crinkle and squeaker. Rufus hasn't been too into this toy, but my kids sure do seem to love it. I found my daughter feeding this to her dolls during a tea party so at least someone in the house is enjoying it!

Knock Knock Rocket Pop

I just bought my kids rocket popsicles so this toy came at the perfect time. My son Fox gave Rufus this toy during dessert when they were enjoying their rocket pop. The kids thought it was great but Rufus just wanted the real popsicle I think! This toy is really great to hold to play catch with and is easy to give to Rufus. This is a toy that I know Rufus will get a lot of use out of.

Nap Bandit

This little guy is so cute! My daughter has basically claimed this guy as hers, but Rufus is pretty obsessed with it as well. He is really trying to get him out of the sleeping bag, which I love! Rufus used to be really good at catching animals back in the day, usually unwanted from us, but I think this toy sort of brought the hunter in him back out. This is a multi-toy set and has two squeakers plus crazy crinkles. So fun!

Verdict: BarkBox was the perfect summer box for Rufus! We received 3 toys this month which felt like a huge win for everyone in my house. My kids really love playing with Rufus, but if he isn't interested in a toy, I know that they will find a way to play with it. Rufus was really into the toys this month so that is a big win since he normally isn't interested in toys these days. For the treats, I know that I can always trust the ingredients so if he doesn't love something, I can confidently pass it along to my Mom's dogs. This month Rufus loved the salmon treats but was a bit cold to everything else. No worries though, it is always fun for us to test and see what he might like. This box is such a great way for Rufus to feel the love and for us to restock his treat shelf in our pantry!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box will be the July box.

Value Breakdown: At $35.00 per month + free shipping for this box, each of the 6 items has an average cost of $5.83.

SO MAD-bc I would have LOVED this theme….adorable. But I got stuck with yet another old themed box from the warehouse instead of the theme of the month they advertise. With a 6 month sub, I got an old themed box from last year 4 out of 6 times. I just cancelled.

New Buyers BEWARE because there is no guarantee you get the theme of the month! I went back and forth with CS many times, but they don’t have a way to guarantee anyone the theme of the month (is what they told me). I think they put money into designing the cute themes, but then make filler boxes for cheap to hand out to most their sub base. I had no clue I would rarely be getting the advertised theme of the month before paying for a 6 month sub. 🙁

You couldn’t pay me to feed my dog something from Bark Box after all their latest scandals. I’ll stick to my trusted and all natural USA made brands thank you very much.

I can’t find much about any scandal, and the allegation of a dog dying was never substantiated. I mean, dogs die every day and you cannot assume the treats killed the dog. I didn’t find any lawsuit or anything to prove this was even true. I’m definitely careful about this kind of thing but as a business owner, I’d like to give them the benefit of doubt. I did see a silly scandal where a toy looked like a sex toy, but hopefully that was an accident.

I really love my barkbox and think they are just so thoughtful with their toys and sooooo creative! My dog doesn’t like 85% of their treats so I traded them in for an extra toy.

So I get 4 toys a month and with a coupon for a free toy each month (they do a lot of coupons but that one is by far the most valuable) and paying up front I got it for $20 a month!!! Beyond worth it for 4 toys.

There was a post on Facebook about one variety of duck sticks, that had “Lucky Chew” on the label, that was making making dogs very sick, and possibly caused the death of a couple of dogs. Barkbox said they were investigating the matter and found no correlation, the company that produced the product had a pretty lackluster response. The chew might have only been included in the Super Chewer version, I’m not sure if it was in the regular sub. The post is front and center on the super chewer Facebook page.
