Vices February 2021 Review

Included is a handy booklet with all of our product info. These are always filled with tons of useful info and great images as well as additional details on the brands included inside.

Kuleana Rum Works Huihui A Blend of White Rums, 750ml – Retail Value $34.99

Kuleana Rum Works Nanea A Blend of Aged Rums Aged 2 Years, 750ml – Retail Value $39.99

It’s always fun to get a Vices that has liquor inside! This month arrived with two bottles of rum, which is always a spirit that puts me in a summery state of mind. There is one bottle of blended white rum and a second bottle of blended aged rums. These two bottles are special because they are made with fresh-pressed sugarcane juice from heirloom sugarcane (Kuleana Rum Works grows 40 varieties!). Less than 5% of the world’s rum is made like this because having that much fresh-pressed sugarcane on hand is labor-intensive and requires a lot of craft.

The Huihui rum is a blend of Kuleana’s rum and other blends from New Guinea and Martinique. I used it in my cocktail this month but also thought it was yummy with seltzer and a squeeze of lime! It is bright, refreshing, and great for mixed drinks.

The darker Nanea blend is comprised of rums from Guadeloupe, Guatemala, and El Salvador. This one is wood-aged and is actually quite sippable as it, which is saying a lot for someone like me. It has a warmer feel than the white rum and is a little smoky and a little sweet.

Prince of Scots The Legends of Hawaii Copper Tiki Mug – Retail Value $79.00

I thought this mug had a really weird scent but it seems like this is due to the packaging. After a wash it was smell-free. It is also quite large, which for me means trouble when it comes to mixed drinks. Will likes to randomly drink his summer beers out of copper and this is a great size for a beer or a large mai tai. It is made of solid copper and features the Tiki god Kane:

Ancient God of Light and Life: Provides safe keeping, Virtue Tiki of Patience and Consciousness. God of procreation. Highest of the 4 major Hawaiian Tiki Gods.

SWZLE Stainless Steel Drinking Straws, 4 straws – Retail Value $9.99

Finally, our last item is a set of 4 straight steel straws with a pretty and very tropical metallic finish. They are perfect for mixing and sipping your cocktail creations.

Speaking of, are you ready for a little cocktail? I chose to make this one in a smaller glass, because, well, I made it at 11:00 am on a weekday and I know myself well enough not to dare make one large enough for our Kane mug unless I can go to bed right after.

Here is what you will need:

  • 1 oz white rum
  • 1 chilled can of Dogfish Head Sea Quench Ale
  • 1 chilled large orange
  • a sprinkle of chunky raw sugar
  • second orange for garnish (I used a pink Cara Cara Orange)

I then sprinkled with some raw sugar (you can also coat the rim of the glass) and garnish it with an orange slice. Enjoy!

Verdict: This was a great fun Vices box in terms of the curation and contents, but, again, I just find the value a little low for such an expensive box. This box costs $144.90 after shipping to PA and there was a total value inside of $163.97. So we did save a little $$$ by purchasing the box, but I always want to feel like a box this expensive has a ton of value. Arguably, the booklet adds another element of value because it was super educational, had recipes, and was a really fun read. But I still want a little more here for a $129.95/month investment. I actually found myself loving the rums (maybe a little too much for a weekday..) and though the price of the Tiki mug was a little crazy to me, it was beautifully made and very on theme. I think this box will delight lovers of rum and summery drinks alike, though maybe they should have sent a third bottle to really kick it over the top!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but you can purchase the Vices Tiki Box for $159. Sign up by the 1st of the month to receive that month’s box.

COUPON: Use code LUXURY50 or TURNTABLE to save $50 off your first subscription (LUXURY50) or receive a FREE Altec Lansing ALT-500 Bluetooth Turntable valued at $149 (TURNTABLE.).

Value Breakdown: This box costs $144.90 ($129.95 + $14.95 shipping to PA) meaning each of the items has an average cost of $24.15.

Man. What I could do with $130.00. I wish I could curate this sub! look at what you get from Besoke Post for $40! This could be a seriously cool sub if they weren’t so frickin greedy! Too bad

Steph

I hope that copper cup is lined with something that isn’t copper. Or else you might get a case of copper poisoning.

Beth

So true. PSA (from webMD):

“The FDA’s Model Food Code prohibits food at a pH of less than 6.0 to come into direct contact with copper and copper alloys like brass. A Moscow Mule, as well as wine, fruit juice, and vinegar, have a pH of less than 6.0. Something so acidic can make copper leach into food…

“Not all copper mugs are potentially poisonous. Those lined with other metals like stainless steel or nickel are safe.”

Dea

Glad I wasn’t the first person to bring up a simple scientific fact. Copper is toxic. Always make sure the cup is lined with steel or don’t use it.

Steph

Is it fashionable now to poison yourself with overpriced drinkware? Like the Victorians and their arsenic-laced wallpaper?

Mellissa

The cup would make a cute summer vase. I agree that the value isn’t there.

Molly Honey

If I were a subscriber I would want at least 2 of those cups!!! Just saying

Aimee

Right!? I was thinking the same thing- who wants ONE of a particular kind of mug/cup/glass. This is a huge pet peeve of mine when it comes to subscription boxes. Send 2 at the very least.

Molly Honey

Exactly!

melissa

I agree! And I feel like I am saying this all the time with this subscription. They often send ONE of something when it would be obviously better as a pair. 🙁

Molly Honey

Well said!

I feel the same way about these Vices boxes: the curations are almost always great, and they’re items I actually want, but they always seem to need one more thing to round them out. A bottle of 151 rum or some other specialty rum would have been nice here. Or just a lower price — if it was $79 a month, I’d be really tempted. Probably better this way, though; I already have enough booze to open a speakeasy in my basement!

Rose

I just cancelled my grandfathered-in subscription, and so far I haven’t regretted it at all. Gone are the days of getting a box of awesomeness (and sometimes crazy value). I still enjoy reading the reviews, but I have no FOMO any more. At least they are putting booze in the boxes, as I do not want things like scarves and beanies in my Vices boxes.

Tolin

Yeah they had a few really bad ones in there! I don’t think anyone thinks of “fashion accessories” when they hear the name “vices.”
