Scent Box March 2021 Review

This month, I received Scent Box’s “Scent of the Month.”

The information card included within the box usually includes some information about the men’s scent of the month on one side and the women’s on the other side.

In case I have not mentioned it in the past, you receive a new atomizer every month. The fragrance is printed on a sticker on the bottom, and the atomizers tend to be different colors each month, so you can keep them sorted.

On to the fragrance:

Light Blue Love is Love by Dolce and Gabbana - Estimated Value $8.32 (buy 3.3 fl oz for $104.00)

Not going to lie, at first I saw "Light Blue" and groaned because if you have ever in your life gotten a multi-brand gift with purchase from Ulta, it has almost certainly included the original Light Blue, and I am swimming in that one. As it turns out, however, this is a summer variation special release (this one from 2020) and it is new to me. For what it's worth, this one is also still avaialble from non-discount retailers including Macy's (linked above).

Top notes are lemon, Granny Smith apple, and red berries. On me, the top notes are really quite short-lived, and that is OK because I am not generally into fruity perfumes (I make exceptions for grapefruit and some berries).

Middle notes include raspberry, ice cream, and jasmine. The jasmine is faint and sort of folds into the overall blend. Raspberry is one of the fruity scents I'm fond of and ice cream goes quite well with it (while wearing this, I was thinking about sweet, vanilla, dessert-like things, all of which I do like in fragrances).

Base notes include cedar, whipped cream, musk, and amber. The whipped cream is probably merging with the ice cream for me, it's hard to sort those things out. I do like woody fragrances a lot and musk and amber are favorites as well. So I think what is interesting about this fragrance is that it combines warm wood/musk/amber with sweet scents (raspberry/ice cream/whipped cream). Those are two of my favorite fragrance categories and it was hard to envision how they would actually work together until I smelled this.

I think this is supposed to be a summery scent and I get that ice cream and fruits are associated with summer, but this reminds me, personally, of more of a cool season type of fragrance. However, if the fruits are more prominent on you, you may have a different opinion -- everyone's body chemistry is a little different.

I would not say this lasted a really long time but what was kind of fun for me is that I sprayed it on before a workout and I guess because I was warmed up and sweating, but the sillage during my workout was really strong, and kind of a nicce departure from the way my basement exercise room usually smells.

Verdict: The estimated value of my fragrance this month is $8.32. Although this is less than the month-to-month cost of the subscription, it is a little better than last month's value, and if you choose your own fragrances, you can increase the value that you get each month. Also, don't forget that you get a free holder and free returns if a scent doesn't work for you, and there is some value in both of those. Plus, this is a new-ish fragrance and not a closeout. I happened to enjoy this month's as it combines two of my favorite fragrance categories and I'm pretty sure I will reach for it often.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, all you have to do is choose this fragrance when you sign up.

ACTIVE DEAL: Get 35% off your first month! No coupon needed - just use this link.

Value Breakdown: This subscription is $14.95/monthly and this month, I received $7.20 worth of fragrance (but again, this is highly variable based on what scent you choose).

LOL… I don’t doubt I have a decent number of samples of that Light Blue perfume too! Those Ulta gwp bags are usually huge weaknesses of mine, although this year I’ve only partaken in one so far during one of their monthly perk days… I’m trying to take it easy with Ulta this year, lol.

One of the subs I signed up with was Royalty Scents, and my first selection was Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry… I have to admit, just like with skincare I’m a sucker for pretty (to me) packaging, and that deep red bottle, plus seeing “cherry” in the name, got me. 😀 Have you smelled that one yet? It’s name is definitely fitting, and I really liked it.

I picked up the Sephora fragrance sets that recently came out, and I already claimed my full size (1oz) bottle of Atelier’s Lemon Island perfume… and I claimed the Tom Ford Soleil Blanc travel spray from another recent kit. 🙂 I definitely haven’t sworn off full size bottles, but considering what I already have, I prefer not to blind buy any full size fragrances… however I’ll make an exception if it’s something I’ve already been eyeing, and it’s marked down like below $20… maybe $30, (so chances are very slim I’ll be adding many to my collection, lol). My last blind buys were a couple of the Mix:Bar fragrances that I was interested in trying but weren’t part of their discovery set, so I bought them when Target was having their 30% off fragrance sale so they were only $13. Tbh, while they weren’t bad, and I’ll still wear them, I wouldn’t have purchased a full size bottle if I had tried them beforehand. But, that’s the type of blind buy risk I’m willing to take. 😉 However, I also bought their Tangerine Squeeze and Coconut Balm perfumes which I tried through their discovery kit and LOVED.

I haven’t bought anything from Surrender to Chance yet… I’m honestly waiting for some sort of discount offer before I buy anything from them. Do they offer discounts at all? So far, I’ve only mostly bought samples/decants from MicroPerfumes, Decantx, Twisted Lily Fragrance Boutique, Tigerlily Perfumery, and Fumerie Parfumerie. I have a little list from Lucky Scent going, but I’m waiting to build that list a bit more before making a purchase. 🙂

Hi Luna!

I can’t reply to your actual comment since there is no reply spot, lol. Per men’s fragrances, I find that vetiver is something I am not fond of, neither is lavender (plus it gives me a headache), leather I really don’t like either. I’m not overly familiar with masculine scents since I don’t have a boyfriend or husband to buy them for and no siblings either. The one male scent I have kind of liked (and want to test it on skin) is Moschino’s Toy Boy, it is more citrusy and not as heavy.

Now, as to Lost Cherry! I love that scent! Others find it doesn’t last long, but I have decent lasting power with it. I am a sucker for cherries and pretty much any other drupe scent (almonds actually being a drupe and not a nut!). It’s my prized possession in my collection, I’m somewhere over 400 now, yikes! I do talk about them on my channel though, lol, so that’s my excuse.

I’m the same with inexpensive fragrances, I’ve picked up a lot over the years at TJ Maxx, Ross and other stores like them. Half the fun for me is the bottles too 🙂

If you ever have a question on a fragrance, reply over here and I’ll let you know what I know about it!

I kind of thought Lost Cherry was a disappointment (at least when I was wearing it), which made me sad because I am the sort of person to open an almond extract bottle (cherry and almond scents are usually mostly benzaldehyde) and just sniff it, and that’s not at all what it smelled like on me. On the other hand I saved $300 or more on a full sized bottle that way.

I stopped shopping at Sephora after they kept messing up my online orders (like sending the wrong foundation shade or canceling most of the items from the order). So I haven’t tried any of their samplers lately.

Surrender to Chance has an email list that sometimes has discounts. You may get one just for signing up. They don’t really spam you, I get maybe one or two a week at most.

Thanks for the suggestion & tips Ragan 🙂 I’ve actually been a bit obsessed with reading Fragantica since I’ve recently been taking a deeper dive into fragrance. I think I’m on the right track with what notes to steer clear from… I’ve found fragrances with leather, sandalwood, pepper, & cedarwood tend to remind me of the typical cologne fragrance that while I think can smell nice I just personally don’t like to wear it… as long as they’re not the main notes… I think I may have received some fragrance samples with one or two of those notes at a time in a fragrance that I liked though. Fortunately, I’ll basically wear anything… just like with other beauty products, I’m pretty easy to please with fragrances. 🙂

Ragan

I don’t know if you’ve been to Fragrantica (Google it, if I post the link my comment will be in moderation for awhile) but it’s a good place to see notes for all sorts of different fragrances.

Anyway, I actually like a lot of men’s fragrances (my last FS Tom Ford purchase was a men’s fragrance…). So we may just have different taste.

Some notes that show up in men’s fragrances: tobacco (not like cigarette smoke), leather, cedar, amber, musk, cardamom, sometimes things like whiskey/cognac/other alcohol names. There may be a few others. But if you can think of a few fragrances you didn’t care for and go look them up on Fragrantica, you may be able to pinpoint something they have in common.

Luna

Ya, I read that people weren’t really impressed with Lost Cherry, but it sort of reminded me of cherry cola which I thought was kind of fun 🙂 I’d need to wear it again though to see if it’s worth asking for a small bottle for my birthday or Christmas 😉

Speaking of Tom Ford, I noticed that Ulta now sells some of their fragrances (some even exclusively), and since I’m taking it easy with Ulta this year, I’m interested to see if I’ll even hit Platinum this year, and since I have a ton of points accumulated that could expire next year if I don’t hit Platinum, I think I’ll use some of them buying a few of the scents! Since I’m loaded up on skincare, I think I’ll use all of my points on fragrances when/if the time comes. 🙂

I thought I signed up to Surrender to Chance’s email list, but I’ve never received anything from them, so I’ll try again. thanks!

I also had a question that I was hoping you (or a reader) wouldn’t mind answering… do you know what notes are common in men’s fragrances? I can appreciate that a lot of houses are trying to steer away from identifying their scents as feminine or masculine, but there’s a note (or notes) that I’m not fond of wearing that’s pretty common in colognes identified as pour homme, so I’m trying to steer away from those note(s) when I make sample purchases based on notes that sound appealing. Thanks!

Oooh, D&G Light Blue… that soo brings me back to my early- to mid-20’s, and I remember I had a manager where that was HER scent, and she would douse herself in it everyday, lol. Fortunately, it worked for her. I recently got back into perfumes, and I re-organized my fragrance collection to make it more presentable, and I came across my original bottle… and after all of these years, it still smells the same! I’m looking forward to wearing it on occasion again. This flanker sounds interesting too. 🙂

I’ve always been into trying new fragrances, but I recently started to let myself really experience & discover them again via subscriptions & purchasing some samples & decants… I’m more into discovering fragrances via samples & decants than purchasing full size bottles to build a collection, plus samples last a decent amount of time for me since I’m considered an “under-sprayer”, lol. Scent Box was one of the subscriptions I signed up with, and my first chosen fragrance (Aqua di Parma’s Colonia Pura) is on its way! I can’t wait to try it 🙂 I was thinking about letting one of the 8ml/9ml subs choose my fragrance for me each month for a certain element of surprise, but I’ve subbed to a few other subs (that send multiple 1.5ml/2ml sprays) and for the 8ml/9ml subs I decided to pick my own scents since there’s so many I want to try, and I figured why not get more product of those scents. 🙂

I’m glad this isn’t the regular Light Blue, I probably have 34 samples of that from Ulta GWPs.

I will buy full sized Tom Ford (all the ones I like), one Atelier Cologne (Pomelo Paradis), Black Opium, Aqua Universalis, and a few others.

I have SOOOOOO much perfume, though. Been working my way through all my Surrender to Chance decant orders lately to clear some samples out.
