Brown Sugar Box March 2021 “She’s Lit Edition” Review

Each Brown Sugar Box includes a mini-magazine that highlights the theme of the box, lists the products included, and offers interesting and inspiring articles. This month’s box is the “She’s Lit Edition,”

Izzy & Liv “Must Be the Melanin” Tee – Listed Value $25.00

This chocolate brown “Must Be Melanin” Tee by Izzy & Liv complements every possible skin tone. The text reads, “It must be melanin,” inside a pattern of circles featuring every shade in the skin rainbow. I love the message of self-love, unity, and acceptance this graphic tee sends. It is a refreshing outlook in comparison to some of the darker events of the past year. Made with 100% cotton, this tee is machine washable — but make sure you wash it in cold water, inside out, with like colors, and tumble dry on low, or lay flat to keep the size and the graphic in tiptop shape.

Izzy & Liv “Stay Strapped” Belt Purse – Listed Value $30.00

Izzy & Liv’s “Stay Strapped” Belt Purse is a functional and fashionable alternative to a standard purse, when you want to avoid the clunkiness of a full-sized bag but still need a place to tuck in your phone, keys, and favorite lip gloss. This purse comes with a 45-inch-long belt and a removable chain strap, to give you the option of wearing this compact purse around your waist or crossbody. I really enjoy using this product with the belt — it’s like the classier version of a fanny pack. Perfect for going on outdoor adventures this summer, so that I can stay handsfree and experience the moments I’m in. Made from PU leather, this 7-inch-wide bag has one compartment inside and a front pocket under the flap, creating a compact but spacious interior. Subscribers could have received one of six colors: black, navy, camel, olive, red, or coral. I received coral.

Izzy & Liv “Inner Talk” Post-It Notes to Self – Listed Value $20.00

This Izzy & Liv “Inner Talk” Post-It Notes to Self booklet is an absolutely adorable collection of affirmation and motivation sticky notes. Each booklet contains a set of three 20-sheet 3-inch by 3-inch post-it notepads. I love the design and the color scheme, not to mention the friendly, positive messages on each pad. The ones I received say, “Work on you for you,” “today is a new day,” and “I choose happiness.” I am really excited to have this post-it note set on my desk. Not only is it esthetically delightful but the affirmations are a little self-motivating pick-me-up that I need while working from home.

Izzy & Liv “Black Girl (un)MASK(ed)” Mask Set – Listed Value $15.00

I love that this pack of 10 Black Girl (un)MASK(ed) disposable masks were included in this month’s curation of the Brown Sugar Box. Masks have become one of the most important accessories for going out and staying safe, and Izzy & Liv breathe new life into this must-have accessory with their bright, bold patterns and designs. These masks are non-medical, three-ply, disposable face masks, with dimensions of 6.8-inch by 3.7-inch, and are good for up to eight hours of wear. Each 10-pack includes five prints. Subscribers could have received one of two 10-packs with five designs: Geometric Goddess, Tribal Treasures, Motherland Magic, Melanin Goddess, or Culture Confidence Soul.

Izzy & Liv “It’s Lit” Book Light – Listed Value $12.00

Izzy & Liv’s “It’s Lit” Book Light brings me back to reading under the covers in elementary school with my crappy Dollar Tree book light when I was supposed to be asleep. I absolutely love the inclusion of this product in this month’s box. The design is a convenient clamp-on, with a flexible 360-degree neck, that clips on to any book or headboard. This book light is an LED touch-activated light and has three levels. It’s conveniently rechargeable and comes with a USB cable. I know I will get a lot of good use out of this product and have found the sleek design and rechargeable capabilities enjoyable. Subscribers could have received one of two colors: white or black. I received black.

[February 2021 Box UPDATE] Just As I Am: A Memoir by Cicely Tyson – Listed Value $30.00

This powerful memoir, Just As I Am: A Memoir by Cicely Tyson was supposed to be included in the February 2021 Brown Sugar Box, but due to a high-demand after this legendary woman’s passing, the publisher was unable to keep up — so, all subscribers were made to receive the memoir in the following March 2021 box. A beautiful hardcover book, this memoir dives into, as said best by Viola Davis:

“This book is Ms. Tyson’s abundant treasure to each of us: her life, in her words, just as she is. She shares truths usually whispered between close friends in the dim light of a back bedroom, those candid declarations not often spoken aloud. And she tells her story the way only a black woman can: in all of its dazzling authenticity, heels off and voice undulating, shifting between anguish and exuberance. The art of acting is the art of exposing, an emotional unveiling before others. Ms. Tyson is as revelatory on these pages as she has been on the stage.”

I’m only part of the way through this #1 New York Times bestseller, but I have to say, it is an absolute must-read. Cicely Tyson left us with a truly mesmerizing, honest, engaging, and educating gem. May she rest in power.

The Verdict: I think the March 2021 Brown Sugar Box was another fabulous box from Izzy & Liv. The curation was right on point. We received the Cicely Tyson memoir as promised, from last month’s box, which went hand-in-hand perfectly with the book light. Another awesome duo from this month’s box is the 10-pack of disposable masks in amazing, bright patterns and colors, which went hand-in-hand with the belt purse. With these two items, you’re all set to experience a springtime adventure at any of the outdoor activities happening this year. I also love the beautiful and positive design of the Inner Talk post-it notes. They look beautiful on my desk and the affirmations are uplifting. The Must Be Melanin tee holds a positive message and has a visually dynamic graphic design that just pulls you in. With a retail value of $102, I think this month subscribers received not only a great value but also a blend of beautifully designed, useful necessities.

I’m a sheet mask loving, skincare obsessed, animal loving foodie. If I’m not waiting for the mailman to bring me some new subscription box, I’m probably working out, writing, or getting cursed out by my parrot. P.S. He was a rescue; I didn’t teach him that.

  1. I am not a WOC but loved your review of this box, as I do all of your reviews. This is my favorite Brown Sugar box so far. That belted bag is fantastic and I would love to see it modeled 🤩 The masks are great as well, such fun patterns and colors. These boxes are superbly curated and I really appreciate the effort they put into them just as I appreciate the effort and honesty you put into your reviews.

  2. This looks like a great box. Everything included in this month’s box is attractive. I loved that you used the description, “esthetically delightful.” I love it when people flex their vocabulary and combine words in a way that you don’t see every day. I also learned that esthetic is the American spelling and aesthetic is the British spelling. I studied Art History at University where aesthetics were a regular part of the discussions. Yet this is the first time that I have seen the word spelled using the American preference. It is nice to learn something every day!

Great review. You are always very thorough in your reviews, making it easier to discover if a subscription box is right for you or not. Thank you!

  3. Hi Naomi! I wanted to drop in and say that I really like your reviews, and I always click on them when I see them.

I am not a woman of color, but even though these boxes aren’t necessarily marketed toward me, your reviews transcend ethnicities and bring the products’ pros/cons and performance to all of us here, and you just provide an honest and thorough overview of the products. I’ve found a few “hits” via your reviews and I look forward to your future reviews! (Also I would tromple over some folks to get that purse in coral). 🙂

    • Same here — not a WOC but I love these boxes and of course Naomi’s reviews! The melanin shirt is soooo cute.

  4. Would love to see the purse with belt modeled!

  5. Great box

I wish they had this box for other skin tones as well. If so I d sub immediately.
