Vegancuts Snack Box March 2021 Review

Vegancuts had a pretty solid year last year. Let’s see what they sent for March:

The box arrived with this information card, which details the items found inside.

On to the items:

Rightrice Medley with Ancient Grains, Harvest Pilaf (6 oz) – Buy a 6 Bag Variety Pack for $25.99

As it happens, this box came right around when we were planning our weekly grocery shopping trip, so we incorporated this into the meal plan. We had it with some roasted vegetables and Gardein “Chick’n Scallopini” (which is vegan and gluten free, by the way, and available at Whole Foods). It was good like this as a side, split into four portions, and worked well as leftovers.

I would suggest not eating the whole pouch yourself at once, because it has a lot of fiber. Like a lot. I am not sure I would regularly buy this because I don’t have a pressing need for a rice replacement but it is quicker than cooking brown rice and it has some protein as well as fiber so it does double duty from a macronutrient perspective.

Sun Tropics Mochi Rice Bites, Sea Salt (0.75 oz) – Buy 6, 3.5 oz Bags for $19.99

This is basically starch as a salt delivery mechanism. Not unpleasant to eat at all, if you like salty snacks (I do), but there are some other flavors that seem like they might be a lot more interesting (all flavors appear to be vegan and thus suitable for this box). This was crunchy but not too hard.

Back to Nature Cheddalicious Cheese Flavored Crackers (1 oz) – Buy 6 oz for $6.64

There were some really heavy things in this month’s box, so these crackers arrived smashed to bits. However, they were good. They are made with wheat flour, making them one of the few non-GF items in Vegancuts lately (don’t pay attention to the Amazon listing that says they are gluten-free: they are not, it appears to be a data entry error). They do a better job than most vegan snacks of being cheesy, although they are not quite the same as actual cheese crackers. But they are pretty close.

Artisana Organics Cashew Cacao Spread (1.06 oz) – Buy 8 oz for $9.99

I have trouble coming up with ideas for products like this, but the information card this month suggested trying it on non-dairy ice cream. We had some Halo Top (of which there are several vegan flavors), so we did that and it was really good. The texture got a little hard as the temperature of the spread dropped, but overall it worked so well that we went digging for other chocolate nut butter samples to use the same way the next night. This did have a good chocolate flavor and was also nutty without tasting strongly of cashews.

Wiley Wallaby Soft and Chewy Classic Red Licorice (10 oz) – Retail Value $5.69

I opened the bag for this and it smelled SO GOOD (I seem to have that reaction to red licorice fairly often). These are big pieces, but not too hard to chew, and they taste pretty good as well (essentially exactly as expected).

Hungry Buddha Triple Chocolate Keto Bar (1.4 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $26.99

I have had one of these before in a different flavor (there was one back in the August 2020 Vegancuts Snack Box in a coconut cocoa flavor). It appears my husband and I were not so enthusiastic about the last one we received based on that old review, but we didn’t really have anything negative to say about this one. It smelled good and we didn’t notice the same issue with a dry texture. In general, keto and vegan diets don’t have much in the way of overlap, so this product fits in kind of a weird niche.

Dang Sticky Rice Chips, Coconut Crunch (0.7 oz) – Buy 24 Bags for $42.96

These were good, but I have never encountered a product from Dang that I didn’t like. They have just a hint of sweetness that works really well to make the rice more interesting (it would be kind of plain on its own). They are crunchy but not hard. We were fans.

Bakery on Main White Chip Raspberry Swirl Decadent Granola (1.1 oz)

You still can’t buy this, but I’ve linked to the product page on the manufacturer’s website. I feel like this product has been “coming soon” for months. I also feel like they’ve run out of product to sell because they’ve sent it all to food subscription boxes. I have received at least 8 or 9 bags of granola from this company in the past two months, and it’s overkill. Like I have eaten so much of it, I kind of never want to see it again at this point.

If you do not get three snack subscription boxes per month, and are a granola fan, but like your granola light on the inclusions, this may be worth checking into. There aren’t many raspberries or white chocolate chips, but there are a few to add just a hint of flavor. It’s sweet but not as high in sugars as I would have expected. And the oats are gluten free, if that is of concern to you.

Minor Figures Organic Oat M*lk (1 L) – Buy 6 Cartons for $27.00

The asterisk is in the product name, for what it’s worth. This is probably what crushed the “cheese” crackers – it’s heavy. I don’t drink coffee, so I don’t know about this, but apparently among coffee drinkers, oat milk is one of the favored non-dairy beverages for adding to coffee. My husband tried this and said it worked. I put some in Crio-Bru and it worked there as well. I did not put any in a smoothie because this has more than 4 times as many calories as unsweetened almond milk. But we did make some waffles using it and it seemed to do OK there as well, with the caveat that it thickened the batter a lot more than almond milk would, so you may need to adjust liquid levels to compensate if you cook with this.

Rise Oat Milk Mocha Nitro Cold Brew Coffee (7 fl oz) – Buy 12 Cans for $29.99

I gave this to my husband because I detest coffee. He was happy that it only has 80 mg of caffeine per can (I think he remembers the days of me getting high caffeine coffee from fitness subscription boxes and he was pleased it was “normal” caffeine content). He says if you are a fan of iced or cold coffee drinks you will probably like this.

Raisels Golden Raisin Sours, Watermelon Shock (0.7 oz)

Every single flavor of this is out of stock at Amazon (I’ve linked to the brand page there in case they come back into stock). It’s pretty much what you would expect from flavored raisins. I think I prefer these to the Welch’s ones that come in Love with Food because these don’t have food dye (and the Welch’s ones have some red food dye that is totally unappealing from an appearance perspective). These are *very* sour though and if you have a canker sore or have bitten your lip or tongue or something, they might actually hurt a bit to eat.

Verdict: For me personally, this was the best Vegancuts Snack Box in a while. It came at the right time in the week in terms of grocery shopping for me to use the pantry items right away, and there were some new snacks and new flavors of snacks I’d tried before. I appreciated getting a suggestion on the information card on how to use the cacao spread, as well.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, order by the end of the month to get the that month's box.

Value Breakdown: This month’s Vegancuts Snack Box had 11 items, which at $24.95 for the box, the average value per item is about $2.26.

This looks like a wonderful selection of products; I’m sad I didn’t get it. Yay for another good month of Vegancuts though!
