Brown Sugar Box February 2021 “Slay Sis Edition” Review
Each Brown Sugar Box includes a mini-magazine that highlights the theme of the box, lists the products included, and offers interesting and inspiring articles. This month’s box is the “Slay Sis Edition,” curated to help you channel your inner warrior.
Izzy & Liv “Skin Flossin'” 3/4 Sleeve Raglan & Relaxed Fit Tee – Listed Value $28.00
This Izzy & Liv “Skin Flossin'” 3/4 Sleeve Raglan & Relaxed Fit Tee is a rich olive color that beautifully complements darker skin tones. Soft and lightweight with a relaxed fit, this tee is super cozy for a day in but trendy enough to run out of the house. The stylized lettering in white and gold cursive says, “Skin Flossin’, Lips Glossin’, Hair Poppin’.” This tee, just like many of the others in the Brown Sugar Box, has such a great positive message of self-love and acceptance. Made from 100% cotton, the shirt is comfortable and cool.
Just As I Am: A Memoir by Cicely Tyson – Listed Value $30.00
I’m incredibly excited to receive Just As I Am: A Memoir by Cicely Tyson. It was only this year that we lost this extraordinary legend in Black history. Since the book was sold out, it looks like Brown Sugar Box subscribers will be receiving the copy they were going to receive in this month’s box with their March box instead, and I’m definitely looking forward to giving it a read. The book is in Cicely Tyson’s own words and chronicles the story of her life as a daughter, a mother, a sister, and a friend whose journey was divinely guided by God’s hand as she graced both stage and screen for six decades.
Izzy & Liv “Always Fresh, Never Pressed” Manicure Set – Listed Value $18.00
I haven’t had a manicure in I don’t know how long… So, this Izzy & Liv’s “Always Fresh, Never Pressed” Manicure Set is a sight for sore eyes. I have to admit, I’ve never given myself a DIY manicure, so this is definitely a first for me. The set includes 24 nails and nail glue so you have plenty of extra if you mess up. Whew, that takes a lot of the pressure off! Get ready to rock a fresh set of tribal patterned nails. Subscribers could have received one of five funky fresh Tribe Called Queens manicure sets: Mother Earth, Gold Vibes, In Coral, In Bold, or Ash Blues. I received Tribe Called Queens in Ash Blues.
Izzy & Liv “Chocolate Celestial Glow” Under Eye Masks – Listed Value $15.00
I work three jobs, so your girl is burnin’ the candle at both ends. Naturally, one of my favorite skincare products is under-eye masks. Izzy & Liv’s “Chocolate Celestial Glow” Under Eye Masks come in a set of 5 pairs and are perfect for depuffing, detoxing, and brightening and reenergizing your under-eye area — perfect for the dark raccoon circles that take up permanent residence under my eyes. They have an awesome gel-like texture and easily stay in place. I like to pop them in the refrigerator for a few minutes prior to using. They feel so refreshing and are the perfect wake-up call for when my eyes would rather just stay in bed.
Izzy & Liv “Fly Girl Fever” Lipstick Palette – Listed Value $25.00
Izzy & Liv’s “Fly Girl Fever” Lipstick Palette includes ten lip colors in a diverse combination of vibrant and earth tones. The palette comes with a mirror and an applicator brush. The shades are smooth, creamy, and easy to apply. I would recommend using a different applicator, as this one seems to shed a bit. I couldn’t find much about the product’s formula, but I did find the lip colors themselves to be somewhat drying, so I would use them in tandem with a lip oil or a primer. The colors are very long-lasting and stay on your lips fairly well, without much transfer. Subscribers could have received one of three fly color lip palettes: Slay Sis, Must Be Melanin, or One in a Million. I received Must Be Melanin.
Here are swatches from the “Fly Girl Fever” Lipstick Palette.
Izzy & Liv “Divine” Eye Shadow Pencil Set – Listed Value $20.00
This Izzy & Liv “Divine” Eye Shadow Pencil Set is here to step up your mask game. Everyone is walking around with masks on now, so all the creativity and drama need to come through the brows, the lashes, and the lids. The “Divine” Eye Shadow Pencil Set comes with six thick pencil eye shadows in beautifully warm and shimmery shades that glide on smooth and creamy. I couldn’t find much information on the formula, but the shadows themselves haven’t irritated my face and the texture is good. Subscribers could have received one of three poppin’ eye shadow pencil sets: Pretty Brown Eyes, A Vibe Called Obsessed, or The Bold & Be-You-Tiful. I received The Bold & Be-You-Tiful.
Here are swatches from the “Divine” Eye Shadow Pencil Set.
The Verdict: I found this month’s Brown Sugar Box to be historic, with the inclusion of the legendary Cicely Tyson’s memoir Just As I Am. I’m absolutely thrilled to be receiving this book and can’t wait to read it. We also received an adorable 3/4 sleeve “Skin Flossin'” olive-colored tee that is super comfortable with its relaxed fit. The under-eye masks are another product that I’m happy to receive — perfect for revitalizing sleep-deprived under eyes. The eye shadow pencil set comes with six thick pencils in beautiful shades. I also received a DIY manicure set with an awesome tribal pattern that I really enjoy and a lipstick palette with ten lip colors and an applicator. With a retail value of $136, this month’s Brown Sugar Box brought some great elements to the table in celebration of Black History Month, and definitely gave subscribers their money’s worth in retail value.
