Love Goodly VIP Box February/March 2021 Review

Each Love Goodly box comes with an info card detailing the items included. If you're signed up for the VIP box, you'll receive all the same items that are sent in the Essentials box but with 1 extra VIP item. The VIP item is always full-size and information about it is given on its own separate card. You'll also find that in the bottom corner of the main info card there's a code for 15% off any Love Goodly shop purchase. Throughout my review, I link each item back to the company that has created it, but every product in the monthly box becomes available for purchase through Love Goodly shortly after the box ships out. If you don't see the items in the Love Goodly shop right away, check back!

This month's box features several items from the French company Balade en Provence, which translates to "a walk in Provence." What I wouldn't give to do just that! Their About section says, "We are a waste-free organic cosmetics company from Provence and we manufacture sensorial beauty bars for hair, face and body." This is Love Goodly's first time including items from this brand. Let's check out the products.

Balade en Provence Aluminum Travel Case - Retail Value $12.06

After years of curiosity, I finally tried my first shampoo bar last month. It was from Canadian brand BKIND, and I nabbed it as an add-on to my Frank And Oak Style Plan. I gave it a few weeks of use and honestly didn't love it—partially because I really didn't research the best shampoo bar for me, I just tried what was in front of me, but also in part because I didn't have my storage situation figured out. That's crucial! My bar, nestled in a plastic vitamin jar lid, turned into a slippery, amorphous blob almost right away. You have to allow for draining—and also accept the reality that there's a little upkeep to go along with this sustainable shampooing approach. There are all sorts of awesome storage solutions (including DIYs) on the internet, and this aluminum travel case is one of them. It has a removable, vented tray to keep your bar in so that it can be kept in prime condition and you can clean the tin easily. Of course it is a travel case and perhaps not what one would use day-to-day, but it does solve a common problem for those transitioning to sustainable approaches in that it provides you a way to bring your waste-free shampoo with you, rather than having to return to using travel-size plastic bottles when on the go. It's a really thoughtful inclusion to go along with the next two products, which are plastic-free beauty bars!

Balade en Provence Enriched Shampoo Bar, 1.41 oz - Retail Value $8.46

First up, a solid shampoo bar. From Balade en Provence:

Formulated for all hair types, our enriched solid shampoo contains a blend of clay, shea butter and natural oils to cleanse, smooth and soften your hair. This shampoo bar is enriched with coconut and grape seed oils and impregnated with a delicate orange blossom fragrance that transports you to the fields of Provence with each wash.

Agreed with all of the above! When you smell the dry bar, the most notable aroma is the neutral, pleasant scent of shea butter. But when you wet it and rub it on your hair, the fragrance is activated beautifully. It foams up nicely, too, which is somewhat uncommon for natural hair products. It isn't something I require in order to feel clean, but it does offer a nice way to gauge whether you've covered your whole head of hair. It rinses out easily and my hair (which is very fine) felt really soft right away. I didn't feel like I needed conditioner after!

Balade en Provence Solid Night Cream, 1.41 oz - Retail Value $30.23

Next up is this bar of night cream. From Balade en Provence:

We designed a nugget. Fewer ingredients, more natural, more organic, but above all a very effective product. With a clean formula, this handcrafted balm made in France is a nourishing moisturizer for the evening. Enriched with cocoa butter and apricot kernel oil, the night balm moisturizes your face while you sleep. You wake up with soft, glowing skin in the morning.

Cream in solid form is a new experience for me. The directions say to rub it directly on your face, letting the warmth of your skin soften it a bit, and then use your fingers in to spread it more thoroughly. It actually feels so nice to run this bar over my skin, like a little massage. The cream felt light and a hint oily when I first rubbed it on, but it absorbed nicely once further worked in with my fingertips. Like the shampoo bar, its scent is somewhat neutral and subtle, but very nice.

Zatik Harmony Moisturizer, 1.7 fl oz - Retail Value $28.00

This face moisturizer has all the makings of something I'd love with its extracts of rose and neroli or orange blossom, its lightweight, and its lineup of virtues: it's biodegradable, certified organic, gluten-free, non-GMO, non-toxic, cruelty-free, and vegan. (Some of those check boxes are true of all Love Goodly products, and some go above & beyond.) But in use, I'm not as taken by this moisturizer as I expected to be. Its consistency is thin to the point of almost being runny, so while vitamin-rich and inclusive of hydrating ingredients, it's not feeling like quite enough to nourish my skin through these remaining dry winter days. Perhaps I'll like that aspect of it better in the warmer weather. And, while I am usually live my life believing a rose scent can do no wrong, something about its scent blend in this moisturizer is coming off as overly perfume-y to me. The scent is strong when I initially apply it, and lingers around for a long time. It's a little overwhelming! I'm going to tuck this bottle away for a few months and see how I like it in the summertime before passing it along to someone else.

Ontology Overnight Glow Hydrating Argan + Almond Night Serum, 1 fl oz - Retail Value Approx. $39.00 (CAD $50.00)

The VIP item this month is an incredible face oil blend. From Ontology Skincare:

This ultra-hydrating 100% natural night serum-oil acts to moisturize, restore and balance your skin while you sleep. Argan oil and grapeseed oil are clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines while the other oils repairs, smoothes and brightens your complexion to offer a youthful and glowing skin.

I can't say enough good about this oil. It's thick, its dropper works well to only release one drop at a time—something I've grown to appreciate the more serums I try—and its scent is a brilliant combo of vibrant and earthy with its lime, rosemary, and frankincense extracts. I have been enjoying it both mixed with my scentless moisturizer and on its own to target very dry areas of my face. In my last LG review, I exposed myself as someone who doesn't wash her face in the evening, so I am finding myself with an overabundance of nighttime skincare products that I've been repurposing for daytime. It's working for me!

Verdict: I loved the sustainable approach to this latest Love Goodly box. Having the opportunity to try two new beauty bars was an awesome experience and helped me learn what I like and don't like in a beauty bar. I'm really pumped they came with a travel tin—it was a thoughtful inclusion that makes actually implementing this type of beauty rhythm transition realistic. The only item I wasn't too into this month was the Zatik moisturizer, but I'll give it another try in a different season, and if I don't like it I'll be glad to pass such a quality product along to a friend. The contents of this box add up to a total value of $117.75. This box costs $48.95 with free shipping, so the value is more than twice the box cost. Sometimes Love Goodly offers a bit of a higher value, but even on this more modest month I felt I was given a thorough variety of beauty goodies to try, and am satisfied with much of what I was sent.

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You should be able to get the February/March box if you order today. For renewal subscribers, the next box for April/May renews on March 28th.

I’ve recently been trying out solid shampoo/conditioner from Viori (they also have one of those sub things where you get a discounted rate for setting up regular shipments.) They use a type of rice (Longshou?) and also donate back to the tribe that grows the rice, so the sustainable and fair trade aspect is nice as well.

While it took me a few tries to get the hang of it, I love the shampoo bar. Supposedly it should last 30-60 washes and I can see that, as I’ve used it eight times with barely a dent. I got the Citrus Yao as my scalp is a little oily.

The conditioner hasn’t been quite as successful. I got Terrace Garden, but may need to try Hidden Waterfall as it just doesn’t quite detangle enough for me. But it does help my dry ends look shinier and my hair look healthier overall. It seems like a 4th of the bar is gone in those 8 washes, though, so I’ll be lucky if it makes it to the 30.

Anyways, I keep mine in a dollar store tub that has a gray bumpy mat at the bottom. It seems to let them drain enough to dry fine. I was a bit too much of a cheapskate to spring for the $10 bamboo holders, though if I opt for the solid shampoo long term I might go for it.
