CURATEUR Spring 2021 Review

Jules Kae Zola Bag - Retail Value $95.00

  • 15" x 15" x 12"
  • Strap Size 8' x 23'
  • PETA-approved vegan leather

When the spoilers launched for this curation, I wasn't excited about this bag at all. In my mind, I assumed it would be super small, like the knock-off Prada bag I used to carry when I was 17, filled with Smuckers lip balm and candy. C'mon, you know this bag! They were cute back then, but totally not functional. Luckily, I was SO wrong about the bag in our delivery! It is so much bigger and the very chic braided strap is long enough to wear crossbody as well as over the shoulder. And, honestly... the whole look is kind of badass. Most of you know I am not into pleather bags. I love leather! But the styling on this one is really, really good. And though it's not leather, as far as the fake stuff goes, this isn't bad quality at all and it feels good. Inside there is a zipper pouch for all of the lip products and candy I still haul around, as well as enough room for all the adult nonsense I also carry, like my phone and wallet. I never in a million years expected to love this bag, but I do! It works just as well with a polished blazer as it does with my black Nikes and an oversized hoodie. Does anyone know of a similar bag in real leather that isn't thousands of dollars??

It even somehow works with my casual athletic wear.

Vita Fede Cassio Earrings - Retail Value $388.00

  • 3.54" Drop
  • Stainless steel with gold finish

Ok, I think we can all agree that the pricing on these earrings is bananas, but the styling and quality is really nice! They also feature links that you can change, making them really convertible (I will show that below!). I don't know about everyone else, but even as someone who loves a statement earring, it has felt weird to wear them with masks. I have been much more into my studs and huggies. So it is a good thing that I can convert these into a chic and shorter look and then add the more dramatic hoops later on. I am also someone with metal sensitivities, but I find that stainless steel doesn't bother me one bit. The gold finish on these is shiny and lovely, and they aren't nearly as heavy as they look. I like these quite a lot!

The following two items are subscriber choice! You can receive ONE of the following in your box:

Teressa Foglia X Curateur 'Lynn' Hat - Listed Value $400.00

  • 4.25” crown; 3.25” brim
  • Felt and upcycled fabric
  • Vegan suede band
  • Adjustable interior sweatband

I don't know much about hats, but I have received many of them in subscription boxes. This one was a collab with Teressa Foglia, a brand that sells some seriously pricy hats. Most of the felt ones on the site were well over $1,000. While this one isn't quite that luxe, I was immediately impressed with the weight and styling. It feels expensive. I am considering removing the faux-suede band and replacing it with something else eventually, but on my head, you would think it was a real suede band. I am also very pleased to report that it actually fits my big head!! Usually, hats are a little on the small side. If you have a smaller head, this one does feature an adjustable band inside, under the ribbon sweatband, so you can adjust it smaller.  My only real complaint about this hat is that I am terrified of getting it dirty! (Does anyone know if you can wax felt?) Otherwise, I absolutely love the look and the soft color. If all hats in boxes were as nice as this one, I would want to see them all the time.

OR

Vita Fede Cassio Pave Ring - Retail Value $250.00

  • Stainless steel
  • Individual rings are size 7.5
  • One ring adorned with pave crystals

While I would 100% recommend the hat over these rings, it is worth noting that these links will work with your earrings because they feature the same removable link design. So if you choose them, you can create even more looks with those gold earrings! Each ring is about a size 7.5 which is just barely too small for my ring finger. Together, they fit more like a size 5.5 or 6. You can totally split them apart and wear them one at a time if you prefer.

All subscribers will receive the following items:

Hugh & Grace Renewing Night Serum, 1 fl oz - Retail Value $90.00

I am always happy to try out a new night serum. This one falls into more of a facial oil than serum category, at least in my mind. The ingredients are really nourishing and totally in line with the sort of ingredients I want on my face at night. This blend has an ingredient list that you can read and literally understand what everything is inside. The majority of the ingredients are plant extracts and seed oils, with the addition of vitamin E. It is on the heavier side, but the hydrating texture and truly delightful scent make it a relaxing experience for a pre-bed facial massage. While I think the price is really high for what's inside, I did end up really loving this serum and I think it was a great inclusion for subscribers because most of us are dealing with drier wintery skin that could use a little extra love right now.

Illamasqua Beyond Powder in 'Daze' - Retail Value $45.00

My final item is one of the prettiest highlighters I have ever seen. Most of you know that I absolutely adore highlighters and I never get sick of seeing them in boxes. Most that cross my desk are a little warmer or have more of a champagne feel, but this one is an icy pearl with a pink flash. The powder is super finely milled and you can't really see the sparkle particulates, but rather just the glow they leave behind. Because it has a little bit of a pink finish, I really love it layered on top of my cheeks, bare or in combination with blush. It's going to be a great spring glow.

Here is a shot in direct sunlight from my window.

And here is an arm swatch! (excuse my Fitbit impressions!)

Verdict: I am really loving this quarter's CURATEUR assortment. This is exactly the sort of curation I want to see! Though sure, I wish the bag was leather, the styling and quality make up for that (mostly). The hat is basically my new favorite accessory. I love it so much that I hang it on my wall when I am not wearing it. The earrings were classic enough for anyone to enjoy and the way you can change them by playing around with the links is genius. The facial serum feels especially nice on my dry face right now and I enjoyed that the ingredient list is simple and botanically inclined. Finally, the highlighter was a hit for me! I think it is a unique addition to my collection and I will wear it a lot.

Anyone have a hat that they’d be willing to swap? It was the one item I really wanted in the box and didn’t get it. I haven’t been able to get one, the swap site is shutting down so I thought I’d give it one last shot!!

FYI – no option to add hat to box, seems that choice is gone

I just received my spring box and the ONLY item in it was the purse. That is it.. no earrings, highlighter, rings, serum.. nothing! Not even the note from Rachel. The fall box I didn’t receive the marine collagen gel I was told it would be shipped it never was. I’m sorry but I gave spring a shot after to see if this sub box could get things right and NO . Plus I know I probably have just wasted my money because I will never get my other products. So bye Curateur I really wanted you to succeed.

I hate to appear stupid but I have yet to figure out how to get these earrings apart. They appear to be soldered on the bottom two pieces. Am I missing something? Thank you Melanie

I emailed them again recently and they sent my serum from the fall. I had canceled and resubscribed got this box. Had a damaged had and they’re resending. I think their customer service is getting better… try reaching out.

Bought this box last night! I’m excited. Megan – Check out Stitch and Swash on Etsy re: a leather version of this bag. She’s amazing. One of her bags was featured in Twilight and I have several of her designs.

just an FYI, my ring size is 5.5, and there is no way to wear all three rings together, so i am guessing these are equal to a 5.0 or smaller if you try to wear all three.

i was able to wear two together comfortably, so i estimate wearing two equals a 5.5-6.0.

alone, they are about a 7.0-7.5 (which i can comfortably wear on my middle finger).

i absolutely LOVE the look of all three together, so if you bought it for that reason, just be aware you’d have to wear it as a pinky ring lol

Anybody’s box missing the serum and highlighter?

This box was the last in an annual sub that I am frankly glad is over. I’ve loved some items but overall I’d say there were more “miss” items than “hit” items for me. I somehow forgot to customize and missed out on the hat, which is my favorite item. Still, glad for the bag, the serum and the highlighter (which is super gorgeous!)

I ordered mine with last week offer of a free gift + $ 25 off. Usually i wait until 50% off, but this time I didn’t want to risk it being sold out. I selected the Hat, that color is beautiful and I know that I will use it a lot, I just hope it is not too little for my head. I also really like the design of the bag, and the Vita Fede Cassio modular earrings offer so many possibilities! As a gift I selected another pair of cool earrings of Amber Sceats Reese. Great deal! All of that and the face oil + the highlighter 😉😉😍 This season Curateur got me.

Megan I totally agree with you on the bag! I am excited that it’s actually the size it is & not smaller! Thanks for the wonderful review! I’ll definitely be looking into that highlighter even more now as well!

What lipstick are you wearing in your photo with the bag?! It looks gorgeous!

The Highlighter looks a little bit like the “Diamond Dust” Highlighter from Laura Geller. I have three versions of Diamond dust (face oil, cream stick, and powder) from mystery boxes and gift-with-purchases last year. It’s a pearly white with subtle pink shimmer.

I haven’t tried the Illamasqua one, but Diamond Dust is nice for a natural glow and a bright highlight where I need it without looking too artificial or blinding.

I forgot to customize in time and I received the junky earrings instead of the hat. Of course. They look so small plus they are hooked together & I cannot unhook them. I’m sick if receiving cheap gold Walmart quality jewelry in sub boxes when gold looks hideous on me, I only wear silver or white gold jewelry. I’m so happy that my next box is my last. This box has gone way downhill. I’m tossing the rings in the garbage where they belong. I really feel like contacting this company & complaing about the junk jewelry they are passing off as worth hundreds of dollars. Good bye to this junk box and good riddance!

Reply ButtonReply

ana

Hey Stephanie,

if you did not tossed the earrings yet, would you consider giving them to me instead? They are the only thing i like from this box, so I won’t be ordering. I would pay you for shipping and they will also get saved from the junk field.

Stephanie

MSA- why did you delete Ouiplease’s post? The one that has 1100 comments warning people. Did they pay you off?

Reply ButtonReply

Julie

From the way the reviews are written and by the comments on some of the posts it does read like they are paid off.

Reply ButtonReply

Ellie

What was the comment?

Stephanie

It seems there’s been some website glitches tonight, the whole post was gone (got a 503 forbidden) and I couldn’t even access it. This post is essential for potential subscribers to OP to see what’s really going on with this sub box as the owner routinely deletes all negative comments on her social media sites and blocks people. For the past year no one has gotten a complete box but subscribers are still being charged bimonthly.

Stephanie

Never mind it’s back. Thank goodness it’s only a glitch.

Reply ButtonReply

Theresa

It is gone again. Something fishy is happening.

Cindy

I’m obviously the only one who finds that bag beyond hideous.

Got my box today and really love it. A question: I somehow screwed up and ordered the ring instead of the hat. The ring is still in it’s complete packaging, I haven’t taken it out or anything. Anyone want to trade the hat for the ring? I’m in Los Angeles, CA.

amandawoj

So every season I initially don’t want this box, then I slowly come around to it… and this review is definitely moving me in that direction! I didn’t like it because the earrings are very similar to the Eddie Borgo earrings we got in fall (which I love), and I also didn’t like either choice item (hat or rings). I also thought I didn’t like the bag, but reading the review & seeing your photo has changed my mind! I tend to look at it this way… I will probably only pay $75 or $50 for this box, & probably get a bonus gift also, so that’s worth it to me to get 3 items (plus the gift) that I like and will use. The quality of the items is usually pretty good, and I can usually find someone who wants the other items. So at $75 dollars, I’m essentially getting the bag, serum, and highlighter for $25 each, or I’m buying the serum & getting everything else free, both of which are good deals for me.
And if I do get it (which I probably will now that I like the bag!) I will swap the hat for much less than $400 value if anyone wants it!

I really loved that hat and the rings when I saw the spoilers but hated the bag until I saw your review. It’s really cute. I would definitely get the box if I didn’t have to choose between the rings and the hat. For some reason I thought it was a choice between the earrings and rings and now Idk what to do.

Reply ButtonReply

Charlotte

If it helps you decide, I’ve seen a few Poshmark/Mercari listings for the ring that note it shows scratches/wear easily. It doesn’t seem to be great quality.

Reply ButtonReply

Mandi

Thanks for the info! That reminds me of those diamond rings they sent out when it was Box of Style, before they changed their name. A lot of people got new ones cause they were so rusted and scratched up right out of the box, mine got pretty ugly too.

Steph H.

I know of two similar older styles of Coach bags, but they’re shoulder bags and not crossbody. 2006 style #10032. 2007 style #10478. Also the Cosmo bag by Hobo. It can be used as a shoulder or crossbody.

Great review! I was wondering how the pleather compares to the pleather in the winter clutch that they sent? I was really impressed with the buttery feel of that clutch. I’m generally a leather person but that one was really nice for fake leather.

This looks like a nice box. I’ve skipped the last 5. Maybe its time to go back?

I am tempted to get this box with the discount code. That purse is the perfect size for everyday carry, and the highlighter is beautiful. I am most intrigued by the hat, however – happy to hear that it will fit those of us blessed(?) with larger craniums. The earrings are not my style, but I can probably gift them.

Reply ButtonReply

Ana

I would love to know the circumference of Megan’s head to see if it will fit my 22 3/4 in head. You can just tell me yes or no if you would please?

Reply ButtonReply

Gina

The hat is actually way too big for my head and usually the hats fit me perfectly.

Ana

Or anyone who’s tried the hat? I really love it but my head is usually too big for hats. Thank you to anyone who can help me.

Alice

I love it! Thank you for the review. Get a brush for felt hats. We use them with our western horse show felt hats (very expensive hats). They take off arena dust, so if it gets that off, it will take care of the average everyday citizens’ dirt! You can spot clean felt. Just don’t get it too wet. Felt can also be steam shaped and set or reshaped by a professional hatter. Most larger western wear retailers shape hats. I can’t wait for my box to arrive.

Awesome review, Megan! I would definitely say this is one of their better curations. That hat looks really good on you especially with your hair. I know me, though, the first time I would wear it I’d probably get foundation on it or a dirty finger print.

Always a fun read! ☺️
