Basic Man January 2021 Review

Blue Mirage Crew Tee, Size M - Listed Value $16.00 (Similar shirt in Stone Grey)

As usual, I am a big fan of the shirt this month. I'm wearing it as I type. I dig the cool blue. It's basic, without being too basic. Does that make sense? The shirts are a cotton/polyester mix and make a great undershirt or main article on a warm day. I know this is a personal memory, but one of my favorite shirts was the same shade as this blue. I wore that shirt into oblivion, but wearing this one makes me think of my old shirt and I like that. This isn't the greatest shirt I've ever own, it's a tribute.

Grey with Blue Socks - Retail Value $12.00

I thought these socks were a little out of the ordinary for this subscription, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. From the heel up, they are a grey sock with blue stripes. However, the foot is solid blue (aside from the usual Basic Man double stripe). They are simultaneously basic and different. To be honest, I'm not sure I've ever seen socks like them. As with most of the socks I receive with this subscription, they are a formal fit. I'm 5'9" and they come up about 3/4 of the way to my knee. They are a cotton/polyester/spandex mix. While I appreciate the different design, I'm going to have to say I am not a fan of this pair. What do you think?

Mood Indigo Boxer Briefs - Listed Value $15.00 (Similar pair in Aqua)

I like the color of these and hope we get a shirt in the same shade soon. The boxers are incredibly smooth and soft and have some mesh for ventilation. They are made from 95% bamboo viscose and 5% elastane. As I mention in my reviews, these boxers ride up a little in the back for me. They are still in heavy rotation for me.

Verdict: As a Basic Man myself, I continue to like this subscription. I particularly like the shirts, which I wear very often. The boxers are nice, but I don't wear them as often as I wear the shirts. For me, I know I will always enjoy the shirt and, to a slightly lesser extent, the boxers. So the only thing I really have an opinion on is the socks. I think this is the first time that anything from this subscription has been a miss for me. The socks seem basic (in a good way), but the more I look at them the stranger they become. Like they tried to do two things, but ended up doing neither. While I'm not a huge fan of the socks, I do like the experimentation and applaud Basic Man for trying something different. I am just one opinion in a sea of basic dudes. Overall, I continue – and suspect I will always continue – to like this subscription.

Note: I couldn't find any of these specific items for sale, but there are many items in different colors. If you are interested in the items, but not the subscription, check out their store for individual items.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? The monthly shipments won't always be the same items as mine – so you can order anytime.

Value Breakdown: The total value of the items is – and I suspect always will be – $43.00. That's a great value for a subscription that costs $19.99. The average cost of each of the 3 items is $6.66. The average value per item is $14.33. I saw on the Basic Man website that they'll give you a $9 discount if you buy a set together, but even with the discount, it is not less than the $20 for the subscription. Not to mention you have to pay for shipping via the website. So subscribers are getting a good value with this one, in my opinion.

I love that comment about your beloved t-shirt. It made me think of the movie Mr. Mom. Micheal Keaton’s Character has a favorite ratty old t shirt he can’t part with and his little son has a ratty old blanket he can’t part with. They give them up together. If you haven’t seen this movie, it is very funny.

Thanks for the review. It made me laugh!

I thought your comment re: the tee was going to be the Tenacious D reference.. . but took a hard right to Mr. Mom hahaha!

Mr. Mom is one of my most favorite movies. 🙂 I always watch it a few times per year. What’s funny is that it unexpectedly came on tv about a month ago, and I was in another room when it started, and when like the first two notes of the opening song came on I was like, “is that Mr. Mom?!” (how could I mistake that out of tune 80’s music!?) and it was!… needless to say anything I had planned for the next couple of hours went right out the window, lol! (yes, even after having it basically committed to memory by now, I’ll still sit down to watch an edited version full of commercials 😀 )
