Marshmallow of the Month Club Subscription December 2020 Review

Marshmallow of the Month box

Marshmallow of the Month usually has an adorable 4x4 box with cardstock pieces making it look like a s'more with ribbons and everything (It's adorable - you can check it out in past reviews), but this month the subscription tried something new. A note inside the box from the creator let me know that she plans to go back to the normal packaging because this new box ended up being too small. I am obsessed with the usual packaging, but I respect a small business trying something new!

Marshmallow of the Month monthly info note

The info card explains the flavor of the month, which is Hot Cocoa. Everyone got cocoa this month for their beverage.

Hot Chocolate Marshmallows

Starting with, of course, the star of the box! These marshmallows have chocolate chips and mini marshmallows in them! I appreciate that their marshmallows are made with a short, easy-to-read, all-natural ingredients list. They're also made with fish gelatin so that they're pescatarian friendly. This month's marshmallows were really good - soft and fluffy, and when they melted in my cocoa the little chocolate chips and mini marshmallows revealed themselves. They were also yummy to eat just on their own!

Gingerbread Graham Crackers

These might be my favorite graham crackers I've tried from this subscription so far - I love gingerbread. The texture of the crackers is crisp and crumbly and the flavor really comes through.

Marshmallow of the Month smore

Hershey Hot Cocoa Kisses - Buy a 10 oz bag for $7

Hot cocoa Hershey kisses are a classic. These have little tiny marshmallows and the chocolate tastes more cocoa-y than usual Hershey kisses. I think they're perfect for a hot chocolate themed box.

Tea Light Candle

Mini Skewer

I received a scented tea light and a mini skewer last month, and I think they're cute extras. I mean, I don't know if I will really use the mini skewer because if I'm going to toast the marshmallow indoors, it will be over a gas stove, and I'll need a longer skewer for that, but my kids thought it was a fun way to munch on a marshmallow! I didn't see a note about the scent of the candle this month; it smells a little floral to me. I like having these to put in a votive on my kitchen windowsill.

Land O Lakes Cocoa Classics Salted Caramel Hot Cocoa Mix - Buy a box of 6 packets for $9.48

FYI Marshmallow of the Month Box sends out different brands of hot cocoa mixes, so the one you received in your box might be different than the one I got in mine. This is really good! I've learned that I really like the Land O Lakes brand (they sell cans of whipped cream I can only find at Costco and it's so much better than what I find at a Kroger or Walmart!) This cocoa is rich, creamy, and I liked the balance of sweet and salty.

Mini Metal Spoon

It seems like a mini spoon is included in this subscription regularly. It's quite small, so it might not be super practical for stirring a normal-sized mug of hot cocoa together, but this could work as a little sugar spoon or something. My kids use espresso mugs when we make hot cocoa for them, and it works well for that size cup, too.

The Verdict: This is my third box from Marshmallow of the Month Club, and I have to say that it's just so fun and sweet. So far, it seems to ship a little late, but last month's note from the chef thanks subscribers for their patience and the opportunity to send them her creations, and it made me realize this is a small shop being run by a real human, which makes me happy. This subscription is whimsical and unique and put together so well! My family and I enjoy tasting every item included. The simple and natural ingredients were really appreciated, and the packaging is fun. I can't wait to see future boxes!

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? No, if you order now your next box should be their February box!

Value Breakdown: Because the marshmallows and graham crackers are homemade just for this subscription, it's hard to really nail down a specific value that you get out of this box. If you're looking specifically at just "how many marshmallows, graham crackers, and hot cocoa packets can I get for $25?" then this box probably falls short. But what I'm really getting out of this box is the fun and uniqueness of the artisan marshmallows, homemade graham crackers (both of which are new flavors month to month), the quality of the ingredients, and the overall experience, too. This was a delight in the mail, and I can especially see it being a cute gift to send to someone.

Love the idea. Wish they were vegetarian.

My box didn’t come with all the cute packaging, but the marshmallows were amazing. I had them with the hot cocoa instead of plain.

I’m not much of a cracker person either, but I must say the graham crackers were almost the star of the box for me. Great texture and taste when plain and even better when dipped in the hot cocoa!

Just wanted to point out – you referred to the chef that creates these boxes as a he, but it is a lovely and talented lady who makes them. I follow her page Edible Opus on Facebook.

Oh Gosh, thank you so much for pointing that out! I absolutely did not intend to do that, and I own that. I apologize – I’ll fix that in the article right away!

Interesting! I was wondering what made the creator a “he”

This is showing up as a reply to Stephanie 😕 when I entered it as an original comment… anywho, also wanted to add that I got my box early. When I signed up, there was a wait list, and it said my first box would be February, so I was pleasantly surprised to get January’s box 👍
