The Clean Beauty Box December 2020 "Balsam" Review

Each month, The Clean Beauty Box features an artist to design their box and info booklet. This month features an earthy abstract design created by Basia Stryjecka.

Earthwise Beauty Black Locust Firming Concentrate, 15 mL - Retail Value $86.00

This is exactly the sort of serum I adore using in the winter months. My skin is already super dry and winter winds just make everything worse. The texture here is a heavier oil and it has a scent that is extremely earthy, but I like it a lot. This formula is geared towards mature, aging, and dry skin, but I think it could honestly work for anyone when used in a way that is tailored towards your skin type. For example, I could easily justify slathering my face in this oil alone (and indeed, I have!) but if you have oilier skin, try a few drops in your fave moisturizer or massage it onto your skin then finish off with a relaxing hot towel! The ingredients inside are awesome. Worth mentioning first is the Bakuchiol. It is inside at a 1% concentration, which is wonderful for aging skin. Bakuchiol is a retinol alternative that helps with fine lines, wrinkles, texture, tone, AND acne. Yes, literally all the things! This serum also contains seabuckthorn berry (hello vitamin E!) and calendula (a dream for eczema, acne redness, and dryness).

Worth noting for anyone else out there with pale or cooler-toned skin is that the seabuckthorn berry inside does have a slightly orange tint that is noticeable. You can see where I applied it on the back of my hand, above. If you mix it with cream this really is a non-issue, but if you plan on wearing it during the day at a higher concentration, just be aware. I actually think it could give a nice (though unintentional) glow in the summer!

Earthwise Beauty Imhotep’s Balsam Face Mask, 32 g - Retail Value $60.00

I was super excited to see that this mask was clay free! Sure, clay is awesome for acne and congestion, but it can be hard on dry skin. I have been using clay-based masks more this year along my jawline (thanks, maskne!) but the rest of my face is thrilled with this ingredient list full of items that are focused on hydration, brightening, and healing. This mask is SO fragrant. It is a mix of woods, fresh evergreen needles, herbs, and resin. Truly, I would burn this as incense! The main ingredient callouts here are powdered aloe leaf, fragrant birch bark, and roots from marshmallow, licorice, and comfrey.

Here is a close-up shot of the paste texture I created with a bit of water. The instructions said to leave it on for 30 minutes and mist with a toner or other face mist to keep it moist and activated (I used LILFOX Bitter Orange from The Clean Beauty Box LE 'Winter Citrus' box). When I washed it off, my skin felt super soft, looked less red, and the whole fragrant experience was uplifting for me mentally as well.

Verdict: This month's The Clean Beauty Box was worth $146 and the delivery was full of wonderfully earthy delights. I really enjoyed both of the products included in this curation. Both felt super nourishing, smelled amazing, and were a great fit for my dry winter skin. Though both formulas were geared towards drier or mature skin, both could easily be utilized by literally anyone to give your face a little extra love.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

This is a company whose products I truly wanted to fall in love with, but I could never seem to get the textures to work easily with my skin.

I wish I had the same experience that so many people had with this mask. It was very itchy from the moment I put it on, and I even mixed it with an Earthwise oil I had from another sub. I couldn’t wait to wash it off.

I absolutely love that mask! It was such a great experience and it had a slight tingle due to the plai in it which is part of the ginger family – but I love a little tingle lol. It was the most enjoyable mask I’ve used in a while I was loving the earthy -woodsy- gingery smell . Truly relaxing ! My face was so smooth After and felt so relaxed! It kind of reminded me a one of the fresh Lush masks I’ve used before which I love all of those as well.
