Bombay & Cedar "Dwell" October 2020 Review

The box arrives with a booklet of information that lists the products and highlights some of the brands found within. October's theme was “Dwell.”

Siberian Fir Essential Oil by Bombay & Cedar, 10 mL - Listed Value $15.00

Eucalyptus Essential Oil Blend by Bombay & Cedar, 10 mL - Listed Value $14.00

I can't express how much I love the smell of pine. I could burn pine-scented oils and candles all year long. This pine scent comes from a type of pine tree that is native to Serbia and Russia. Eucalyptus is another amazing scent that is perfect to receive during cold weather months. It is great to help clear congestion, ease a cough by using it in a steamy shower, helps with seasonal allergies, and so much more. The smell is so earthy and relaxing, it has been the perfect scent to use in my bedroom diffuser.

Sticker Yourself Happy by Esmee Rotmans - Retail Value $14.99

This book is a crafters dream! It is filled with 14 color-by-number templates and stickers that you can create. Each of the pages can be removed easily to work on and frame, and each page would fit in an 8 x 10-inch picture frame. These pages would be great to use as gifts for a baby shower or birthday, or just for you to create and hang in your own house. The colors don't really match any of my kid's rooms, but I think I am going to work on a few to add to their playroom! Such a fun way to craft easily at home.

Shower Steamer by LizushShower Steamer Tray by Oily Blends - Listed Value $12.00 (buy a set of 12 here for $48)

I have never used a shower steamer before, but have always wanted to try one, especially since I love a super hot steamy shower. I was really excited to see that this steamer also came with a wooden tray so I could use it right away. I just placed this tray over my shower drain and added the steamer to my super hot shower. The packaging says that this was a mint steamer, but I am so sad to say that I didn't get much of a scent from it. My husband even came into our bathroom while I was using it and I asked if he smelled anything to which he said that he didn't. I thought maybe it smelled a bit orange, but not the strong mint scent that I was hoping for. I might try to buy a few more steamers to try now that I have this handy wooden tray, though!

Organic Coconut Oil Moisturizer by CocoRoo, 8 fl oz. - Retail Value $19.95 (found on sale here for $17.95)

I have been using coconut oil on my skin since my first pregnancy which was many years ago now. I love how coconut oil makes my skin feel and how amazing it can smell. I received the "Lost in the Lavender" scent which I was SO happy about! It has a strong lavender smell without being too floral, and it is the perfect scent for me to use late at night or in the early morning. It wakes me up while keeping me calm. This moisturizer is made with 100% natural ingredients including Organic Virgin Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil, Cold-Pressed Macadamia Nut Oil, and Organic Lavender Oil. It goes on smooth leaving my skin feeling hydrated without being too overly greasy. This is also a great moisturizer to use on kids since the ingredients are all-natural, and the scent is perfect to use on them before bed. Needless to say, this bottle was a welcomed item to help tend to my family's dry skin!

Nut & Seed Snack Bar by Yes Bar, 1.4 oz. - Listed Value $2.95 (buy a box of 6 bars here for $17.94)

If you have been following my reviews over the years then you know how much I dislike coconut. I have tried to like it, but I just cannot eat it. And unfortunately, this was a super coconut-heavy bar so I passed it onto my husband to try for me. This bar is the perfect snack to have between meals or to enjoy for breakfast, which is how my husband enjoyed it along with some yogurt. It is packed with 5 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, 9 grams of sugar, and 220 calories. The bar is filled with strawberries, coconut, macadamia nuts, and chia seeds. Unfortunately, my husband wasn't blown away by this snack. He said it was super tart and sort of mushy but not in a good soft cookie type of way. He ate it and felt full but said it isn't something he would reach for again.

Here & There Inspiration Wood Art by Compendium - Retail Value $9.95

This would make such a great gift for an office or a nursery. This 4 x 4 piece is made on natural wood and comes predrilled so you can easily hang it right away. I love the bold black paint on this print, but the website shows a variety of other designs that really pop with color! I decided to hang this in my daughter's room near a few other prints that it works well with.

Twelve Reusable Cleaning Wipes Kit by Mortier Pilon - Retail Value $19.99

This cleaning kit is really cool! The only ingredients you will need to add are white vinegar and water, the kit comes with everything else. I actually use a mixture of vinegar and water to clean windows/glass surfaces because I find that it works better than your basic window cleaning products like Windex. So this blend will be perfect for me to use for those areas without the harsh smell since this kit comes with fresh essential oil. Inside the glass container are 12 microfiber wipes that you can wash and reuse with ease. This is also great to have on hand if you still haven't been able to find cleaning products easily, which I know can still be tricky. What a unique item!

How to Use:

  • Mix 3 tbsp white vinegar, 1⁄3 cup water, and 2 drops of essential oil in the glass bottle.
  • Let wipes soak and use to clean any hard surface.

Verdict: October's box featured a variety of products that will help to enhance your home! If you are like me, then you have been inside your house pretty consistently since March, now with the cold winter days we are fully inside most days. So having a few things to spruce up our space or to use in it are always fun! I will say that I am bummed to see that these boxes are still super delayed. This box didn't get to me until December. (More information about their shipping delays and estimated timelines here.) My favorite product this month was the coconut oil because my skin is in a bad way lately and this is honestly helping to save it! I have been using it in the morning and at night and have started to notice some dry patches beginning to clear up. The cleaning kit was really unique! I love to clean and am always cleaning up messes with two kids and a dog running around so anything extra to have on hand is always welcome. The sticker book is a really fun way to craft to make gifts for friends that you haven't seen in a while or to spruce up your space. I also find doing crafts like this to be super relaxing so I am excited to continue working on a few pages that I've already started. The essential oils were amazing as always and have been added to my oil collection. I was a bit disappointed by the shower steamer and the snack bar was just ok, but I still enjoyed giving them both a try.

The estimated retail value is $108.83, well above the $44.95 monthly cost including free shipping. While I thought the value seemed a bit lower than in previous months, the products are all things that I know I will use. I do hope to start seeing a shift in the shipping delays only because they do such a great job curating to each month's theme that I would love to be able to experience these products for the month that they were selected for.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this was the October box. According to their site, November and December lifestyle boxes are both still shipping.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $44.95 + free shipping, which means that each of the 8 items in the box has an average cost of $5.61.

I recently got billed for my renewal, at that time they were 4 boxes behind. Since then I have received my “mystery sale box” and my Nov. 2020 box. I still have not received my Dec. 2020 box or Winter Box, even though I was sent tracking # several weeks ago, but they have never updated as actually being mailed. I have emailed 3x & no reply. Really wish they would get their Bombay’s together!!!!

I just received the December box and honestly I feel bamboozled. It has cupcake mix and icing mix in it. It also includes gift tags and disposable bamboo silverware and a book I will never read and don’t know anyone to give it to. The icing on the cake (pun intended) is the made in China very large and clunky “gold cuff” bracelet that doubles as a bottle opener. I don’t know about you all but it anywhere I would would be going where I would wear a large cuff I would not be also opening beer bottles at this stage in my life (not a party girl by any means!) and storing a bracelet in my drawer that I keep kitchen items in seems ridiculous. I thought it was way off and although I will make the cupcakes, I feel paying this much for a box the items should be curated much better. I felt like the items in this box could have been found at my local Dollar Tree store and that is so disappointing especially when they have the shipping delays. Am I off here or does anyone else agree about this box? If anyone wants the bracelet, let me know! I won’t judge, I promise. 😊

I agree with you on the December box not being that great but I don’t feel like you could find the cupcake/icing mixes at the dollar store. I did feel like they were higher end for vegan baking products. I agree that there should have been more in the box. A vegan cookbook won’t appeal to the majority and we weren’t given a choice of books. I believe there were several cookbooks sent and all were vegan.
That bracelet on the other hand, well, I am with you all the way on that. The cookbook and bracelet went right into the Goodwill bag.
I thought the gift tags were really cute. The bamboo utensils I brought into work with me today. Our huge office pared down to @30 “flex” offices and I just threw the utensils in a drawer of one. Since I can’t keep any of my personal items in the office I figured no one will object to nondescript, disposable utensils.

Haven’t tried the vase cover yet but I like the idea behind it. I actually received the one I chose (I normally do not receive my choice of items that we get to pick from).

I get both the monthly and quarterly boxes and I’m all caught up.

The thing is, running a hot, steamy shower dries out your skin. I have to layer on enough lotions and oils in the winter using warm but not piping hot water, or I become an itchy mess. It sounds intriguing, though.

I loved these boxes so much but after subscribed off and on for a year plus I couldn’t take it anylonger. I know for a fact they will never be caught up because since they started they have always had shipping issues. When you email they they either don’t get back to you or they do but don’t answer any of the important questions. The updates on their site is a great idea but none of it is true and they change the dates every week. In my head i would stop having extra sales and starting a new box until you can deal with the bigger issues at hand ….SHIPPING and Customer Service Support.

The themes for this subscription box always leave me scratching my head. It’s like they have a bag full of verbs or something and someone over at Bombay & Cedar picks one each month to determine that month’s “theme.”

Unless the theme is pertinent to the box’s contents, I think they should be left out. There is nothing that screams “dwell” in this box whatsoever.

big bag of verbs hahaha!

How far behind is this company if you just got October???!

Reply ButtonReply

Tina Ames

Hi Kristian, they are pretty much caught up, they have shipped most of the December lifestyle boxes, they have shipped all the December Beauty Boxes and they have shipped most of the winter boxes…..They should be completely caught up by time they start shipping the January boxes, they do not start shipping those until the end of this month.

Tina Ames

Hi Sandy I get your frustration I was like that at first, I did get my winter box today and my December lifestyle box will be here on Saturday, I hope you see your boxes soon…..I am hoping that by the end of the month they will be caught up, and they are able to ship the January beauty and lifestyle boxes on time.

Sandy

From a subscriber perspective, it sure doesn’t feel like they are almost caught up.
My winter lifestyle box has had a tracking number for two full weeks, but has not actually been shipped yet. Sure, they’ve purchased postage for it, but that doesn’t mean anything to me until it leaves the warehouse.
No shipping notification for December’s lifestyle box yet, and no information released for January’s lifestyle box. If they plan to have any subscriber selection items, I’d be shocked if they will ship on time when they haven’t even opened up customization or released any spoilers yet.
The November box didn’t arrive until January, which was very disappointing for anyone planning to use parts of it for Christmas gifts.
I love this box, but the delays are really frustrating. Sure, COVID, blah blah blah, but none of the other companies I work with are having this much trouble with shipping things on time.

Frances

Mine box has said “ready for UPS” since 12/23…still no delivery date 🙁

Im curious about the purpose of the wooden tray for the shower steamer. Could you, please, elaborate.

I got shower steamers for my mom as a gift and I want to know if Im missing something.

Reply ButtonReply

Tina Ames

Hi Gloria the tray is just to set the streamer on, this way you can set the tray in the tub instead of just putting the streamer onto the bottom of the tub…..It really just makes it look better and the water hits it a little bit better, I hope this helps.
