Birchbox The Curl Hydration Kit Review

Here is the info sheet for the box.

PATTERN Beauty Leave-In Conditioner, 3 oz – Retail Value $9.00

If you read my LE Curl Box review you know how I feel about this leave-in conditioner– it was my first experience with PATTERN beauty and I am officially a big fan. This leave-in is lightweight, moisturizing, and helps to keep my curls from tangling once my hair is dry. I apply it to wet hair before I step out of the shower, and I’ve already gone through a full-size tube – this smaller option I’ll hang onto for the next time I get to travel so my hair can always have it.

Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Avocado + Kiwi Mega Moisture Superfood Mask, 1 oz – Estimated Value $4.50 (buy the 8 oz version for $36.00)

I’m a fan of Briogeo (they’re a black-owned haircare brand with great formulas and fun packaging), and this is their newest deep conditioning mask. It’s made with superfoods like avocado, kiwi, and spinach (if you couldn’t tell by the name), and it’s nourishing without being too heavy. I do think this mask is better suited for my dry, curly hair than their 'Don’t Despair, Repair' mask, but I use this more as other people would use conditioner than as a once-a-week mask.

Thank God It’s Natural Miracle RepaiRx Deep Hydrating Mask, 2 oz - Estimated Value $3.00 (buy the 12 oz version for $17.99)

This deep hydrating mask is thiccc – it has the kind of texture that coats every strand of my hair, and while it feels slightly heavy it washes away without any residue leaving my curls hydrated and happy. This is formulated with raw black honey (as the second ingredient!), coconut oil, agave, and Marula oil – just to name a few. For those who need a heavy-duty deep conditioner, this is definitely an affordable option that performed well for me.

Qhemet Biologics Moringa Tree Conditioning Ghee, 1 oz – Estimated Value $2.75 (buy the 8 oz version for $22.00)

This is a multi-use product – you can use it as a leave-in conditioner on wet or dry hair, as well as a deep conditioner on wet hair if you have some time to let it sit. It has a lot of interesting ingredients like amla, nettle leaf, and oat straw extract along with the more well-known virgin coconut oil and Marula oil, and it made for a unique formula that my hair really enjoyed. I like being able to use this on dry hair – one way I’ll style my hair is to have it dry in braids for a day and then the next day take out the braids, fluff, and go, and this helped to add moisture to my curls and prevent tangles.

Oyin Handmade Oh My Glide Prestyling Detangler, 2 oz - Retail Value $3.99

I prefer to reach for leave-in conditioners rather than sprays when I need help detangling my hair, but this one certainly has a nice smell to it (probably from the sweet orange oil). The spritz on this was pretty targeted – rather than spraying it directly into my hair I had to spray it into my hands and then finger comb my curls to disperse the product. This has ingredients like aloe, castor oil, squalane, and avocado oil, and I think those with low-porosity curls will enjoy it the most.

Verdict: I love when sets are targeted specifically for curly hair – it’s a rarity when you consider the massive amount of hair products that exist, yet usually target those without texture in their hair. What was disappointing, though, was the value of this set – it feels like this set is missing a product or two. Everything included adds up to $23.24, which is only a few dollars more than the cost of the box and nowhere near the promised value of $38. I’m disappointed that this box feels lacking, but the products that were included all performed very well.
