Bombay & Cedar Lifestyle Fall 2020 Review

The box arrives with a booklet of information that lists out the products and highlights some of the brands.

Kombucha Starter Kit by Craft A Brew - Retail Value $39.99, Listed Value $39.95

This kit is the real deal if you are a kombucha fan and want to try your hand at crafting your own homebrew! If you follow my reviews then you might remember how I have tried for many years to like kombucha, but I just have never become a fan (my husband does not like it at all either). The great thing about this kit is that once you make your brew, you can bottle it, which would make an amazing gift for my kombucha loving friends. I also might pass this along to my sister-in-law who loves kombucha and I know would truly enjoy making her own. I can't decide! The other really good part about this kit is that the SCOBY is not included, so you have time to get your brew together if you aren't ready once it arrives or to pass it along as a gift if you wish. The box does come with a code so that you can order your SCOBY online once you know you are ready to brew. The directions included are super easy to follow and there are just a few extras that you will need, like glass bottles if you wish to bottle it once done brewing. Once you have everything together, you will want your brew to sit for around 7 to 14 days.

This Kit Includes:

  • 1-gallon glass jar
  • Organic black tea
  • Organic cane sugar
  • Tight weave cloth & rubber band
  • A guide to brewing your own kombucha
  • Claim code to receive a fresh SCOBY

Go Be Lovely Lidded Ceramic Candle in Golden Honeysuckle by ILLUME - Retail Value $28.00

This candle is delicious! I put this in my room since the container matched the decor in there the best. The other day I lit it for the first time, went downstairs to get my kids settled for breakfast, and when I went back upstairs shortly after I was so surprised that the entire upstairs was filled with this rich honeysuckle scent. It is sweet without being overpowering, clean, and fresh. I love that it comes with a lid so I can secure it so my youngest can't stick her fingers in the wax, and I love the simple gold flakes on the outside. This really was the perfect candle for my bedroom!

Body Scrub Truffles in Mojito by Bonbon, 6.35 oz. - Retail Value $24.00

I recently received a facial scrub from this brand and was really surprised by how well it worked so I was excited to give these truffles a try. I love the brand too because each product is handcrafted in small batches to ensure quality and fresh ingredients. I received the Mojito truffles and they smell incredible, sweet without being too sweet with a bold minty scent as well. They are made with sweet almond oil, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, spearmint oil, lemon oil. My skin is seriously dry year-round, but in the winter it gets worse so I've been using these truffles every other day to keep my skin feeling fresh. I've also been using them on my hands which are a dry cracked mess right now from winter and washing constantly. They are really working! All you have to do is take one truffle, squeeze it gently, massage it all over your body for a deep exfoliation, and leave it on your skin for a few minutes before rinsing with warm water. They leave my skin feeling so super clean yet moisturized and oh so soft! I am going to buy another container since I am almost through this batch!

Arm Warmers by Leto Accessories - Listed Value $23.00

These ribbed arm warmers are 100% acrylic. They are pretty soft and warm enough to wear on a cooler fall evening. We are in the thick of winter where I live so anything fingerless just won't do the trick, but these would be perfect to wear during the fall when the evenings are cooler,  but not cold. I do love having my fingers free so I can help my kids easily and get to my phone without issue. I am outside a lot as well so I can always use an extra layer of warmth. These probably won't get a ton of wear just yet, but once the super cold weather breaks into a chilly spring, they will be the perfect layer for me!

Lip Balm Holder and Unscented Balm by Lippyclip & Public Goods - Listed Value $12.50

I usually keep my lip balm handy in my makeup bag, so I don't usually need to search for it. However, my kids are constantly looking for lip balm and I don't always have my makeup bag on me to let them use mine. So this little set is placed in our kitchen for now so that my oldest can easily find it and apply it on his own when he needs it, which he usually needs a lot in the winter months. We aren't really going anywhere right now, but once we do I think I'll move this from our kitchen to my diaper bag so he can find it there when we are on the go. I love that the balm is so snug inside and that it clips easily to just about anything. The balm is unscented and provides rich hydration that our lips really need right now in the cold weather.

Statement Earrings by Claudia G. - Retail Value $39.00

These earrings are stunning! I received them in gold, but it looks like they also come in silver and rose gold. They are stainless steel with gold plating and around 2.5 inches long. They slip on easily with a secure closure, and they rest nicely to the side of my ear. Unfortunately for me, I can't really wear big earrings like this because my daughter will almost certainly rip them out. I am deciding if I want to save these for whenever I can go out again, or if I want to gift them to my mom who loves a good statement earring. Decisions, decisions!

Bananas Foster Peanut Brittle by Sweetsmith Candy Co. - Retail Value $5.99

This peanut brittle got devoured by my son and husband in maybe 2 minutes. That has to be a record right?! I was really excited that we were able to try this flavor as well once I saw that it is out of stock on their site until 2021 (you can pre-order it though). This handmade brittle is gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free, and vegan (it is, however, manufactured in a facility that does process peanuts, soy, and dairy which is very important to note). The brittle itself had that big breakable crunch that any good brittle will have. There was a rich chocolate flavor with a hint of banana flavoring to it. The peanuts mixed with the chocolate drizzle were probably the best part for me. This was a fun sweet treat to get this month and would absolutely make an awesome gift or stocking stuffer!

Food Guard Lids by Food Guard, Pack of 5 - Retail Value $24.99

I had no idea how badly I needed these lids! My kids are constantly asking to save their plate of food for later or not finishing a lot of food which means I have to find a Tupperware for it or fumble with saran wrap. Not anymore! I can take their plates and quickly and easily cover them with these lids to save for the 5 minutes until they want their plate again. These are also great to use over bowls of fruit, sauces, or even veggies that I chop earlier in the day to use later when I cook dinner. I love that they can really fit on so many different plates and bowls. They are also dishwasher safe and environmentally friendly. The site also notes that you can use these in the microwave, oven, and freezer which is crazy to me! Such a simple yet fun and functional item to get this month!

Exfoliating Back Scrubber by KOL - Listed Value $15.00

This scrubber is designed to allow you to reach your back, neck, and shoulders easily. The scrubber is infused with charcoal to help cleanse and exfoliate dead skin cells. It provides a nice little massage as well, as it does its deep clean of your skin. This is something that my skin absolutely needs right now! I used it on my back and then on my legs and feet as well because why not?! The scrubber is soft so you don't feel like you are getting a harsh exfoliation, which I like, yet it did a great job of making my skin feel soft and clean. I love that you can wash it easily and hang it in your shower for daily use.

Verdict: This box was fun! It didn't totally blow me away, but it was filled with a nice variety of products that I will get a good amount of use out of. The kombucha kit is the big item this month, and while it might not be totally for me since I really dislike kombucha, it would make a great gift for my friends that love the brew! The candle was just so delicious and looks amazing sitting in my room, it makes me really happy to see it lit on my dresser. The mojito truffles are saving my skin right now, they are great to use in the shower or on my hands. The scrubber pairs nicely with my morning shower as well and keeps my skin feeling clean and smooth without making it feel chapped from too much exfoliation. The lids are a hit for me, coming from a mom of two, but they really are so handy and easy to use! The arm warmers and brittle were fun little add-ons. The earrings are stunning, they just aren't functional for my life right now, but will make a great gift for my mom! While the box was great, it didn't really have that one thing that I was obsessed with, but it was filled with items that I will use.

The estimated retail value is $212.47, which is a wild value for the $74.95 cost including free shipping. While I might not have been completely over the moon with the products, I really did enjoy everything and will use pretty much all of the items – or gift them to people who will use them.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, Winter boxes are expected to start shipping on December 15th.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $74.95 + free shipping, which means that each of the 9 items in the box has an average cost of $8.32.

This looks like a nice box, but by the time I added up how much I would use VS the price, I barely broke even.
That is how I generally figure out if a box is worth it for me, otherwise I can go to EBay and get the items I really wanted from the box for 50-75% off retail. Always someone posting soon after a box hits their mailbox, things they will not use.

So, my box was a crushing disappointment.

I had ordered this box on August 16. Early subscribers got a lower price and a bonus mystery box. CAD $105/USD $75 with shipping. The first box was fall. I have received it on November 25.

UPS slapped $40 of fees on the box.

There was ZERO padding, items just thrown together. No mystery bag. The no name poop-coloured polyester scarf made in China looks as glamorous as it sounds. Some cheap earrings for my non-pierced ears. Chattered brittle. Back scrubber in a broken hard plastic package. Some weird lip balm holder that is supposed to be clipped to your bag/backpack – very cool if you are 14. Coconut body scrub guaranteed to clog your drain. Silicone lids. The star of the show – kombucha kit needs a starter which is claimed free of charge – with USD$ 10 shipping to Canada. The only item I love is the huge Illume candle.

Zero customization: scarf/socks, earrings/bracelet, lids/bamboo containers.

Moral of the story: never bloody again.

They promised to ship my mystery bag with November beauty box. Still waiting.

Sorry everyone for any confusion, this is the quarterly Fall box. The review has been updated with the correct information and pricing. The Winter box should be shipping out soon. Thanks!

I signed up for this box for the $60 price and am quite happy with it – I got the kombucha kit which I was disappointed with (the other options were sold out by the time I logged in) but it will go to my sister. I got a scarf instead of the arm warmers and I’m not a big fan of the color I got but my mom wants it. My earrings were fortunately silver in a slightly different design and I will definitely wear them once the world open!!! Overall everything will be used or gifted so it’s a win 🙂

Oh my, that Lippy Clip brought back memories…wow, I haven’t thought of this in ages, but maybe 8-10 years ago either Too Faced or Tarte had a keychain-ready tiny lip gloss tube? I might be wrong about the brand, I just remember getting it at Sephora in NC. I thought it was a brilliant idea at the time and not only used it until the tiny tube was empty, but tried to “refill” it with more lip gloss as it emptied. I’m inclined to say it was Tarte (at the same time they had those switchable lip glosses where you could mix and match two tubes with a plastic connector and make your own duo.) Sorry for the length, I’m just in memoryland with this product.

Also while those earrings are not my personal style, they look really good in pics!

What is a SCOBY?

Reply ButtonReply

Janelle

A scoby is the culture that fuels the fermentation process used in making kombucha. It looks like a big gross blob.

Ahh which box is this? Quarterly $75 or the $45 one? There aren’t any essential oils in it, so probably the quarterly? I’m tempted if the latter, since I’ve been curious about trying kombucha but would much rather use a starter kit than try to figure it out on my own. The other products look nice as well.

It’s the quarterly.

I love arm warmers! Your review reminded me that I lost mine forever ago and I really should get another pair!

This IS the Fall 2020 Lifestyle box. Says so in the booklet.

This is the quarterly box for 75.00 not the monthly box for 45.00…..This box is not worth 75.00 with only a value of 212.00…..There are lots of 50.00 and 60.00 quarterly boxes out there that have values of 250 and up…..I was not impressed with the box, I hope the winter is better…..This is just my opinion, I know not everyone will agree I am sure a lot of people liked it and that is fine…..But for me the value needs to be higher at least 300 for a 75.00 box.

Thank you for the review, kind of wish I’d grabbed this. Isn’t this the quarterly lifestyle box though that’s $74.95?

Sherri

Yes, this is the quarterly/seasonal box (Fall 2020). The reference to the monthly sub and that price seems to be an inadvertent carry over from the B&C review template (this is the very first seasonal box they issued). I’m not sure what the price is now – MSA members had an option to lock in at $60/season when they announced the box, so that’s the number I’m aware of.

LOL! I am confused as well. However, I don’t have a great track record with B&C, as somehow I ended up with their beauty box instead of any type of lifestyle box. This is good value if it is the $44.95 box, but something tells me it is the quarterly box. No fault of the author, though…I would like B&C to be a bit more “understandable” (at least for me, as I seem to be B&C-challenged).
