WompleBox October 2020 "Japan" Review

In our box, we received this great fold-out map with information about the country we are exploring on each panel. This month we are traveling to Japan and the various pages provided information about the culture. This month we learned about Tokyo, Kyoto, and even received a recipe to make our own Mochi.

Our map unfolded to show the country of Japan on a large scale that's easy to read.

He loves exploring these maps and it's always a great mini-geography lesson when we talk about which continent the country can be found on.

These are the nice, quality stickers they included for us.

Usually, there is an activity to accompany the map and stickers which helps us place the stickers on our map, but this month there didn't seem to be anything that I could find. Instead, we just read through our Womple materials and decided which region our stickers belonged in.

Our collectible this month is this fun raccoon dog keychain. I had never heard of this before, but fortunately, our book explained exactly what it was! He loves that he has a whole collection of these keychains now.

The chapter books that we receive each month are so great and full of colorful illustrations, photos, and this month, tons of information about Japan which is presented as a story. The text is full of various fonts and colors to highlight words of importance and they always throw in some words from the country's native language which is always fun. My son really loves these books even though he is a little young for them and this month we enjoyed learning about raccoon dogs, which are a completely new animal to us both. The book took us to various places around Japan and even had us exploring some of their food, such as mochi and soba noodles. It's such a creative way to learn about their culture without it feeling forced. These books are a bit lengthy, but since they are divided into chapters, it's easy to break them down!

He's always ready for his next Womple adventure!

We learned about woodblock prints in our story and this month they provided some materials to make our own prints, although we used some foam instead of wood!

They provided some foam board, two wooden scratchers, a paint roller, blue acrylic paint, and some paper for us to print on.

On the front of the instruction sheet, it shows all of the materials. We needed some foil, paper towels, and a spoon from home. The back of the sheet breaks our project down into steps that are easy to follow.

I added some paint to a piece of foil and he rolled his roller in it and then began to roll the paint over his foam piece.

Then we placed the white paper on top of the foam and he used the back of a spoon to add some pressure for the transfer.

Here is his Komodo dragon.

This is my snow monkey print.

I thought our prints turned out pretty cool and I love that we explored a new technique that we can use any time!

The last item we received was a postcard which provided a sneak peek at the country we will be learning about next month. I think it's such a cute way to introduce the next country!

Verdict: My son and I had a lot of fun exploring Japan with this month's WompleBox! He is always so excited to see that blue box in the mail and discover what his keychain will look like and find out where Womple will be going. He really loves these books and I think it's such a fun and engaging way to explore a new culture. The craft this month turned out well, too and I can see us making a lot more prints with this technique! Overall, this was a great box that we enjoyed!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
