Darn Good Beads of the Month Whispering Feather Earrings Kit Review

I’ve been receiving Darn Good Beads of the Month for quite a while now. I expect to get a simple project with instructions that will be easy to complete in under an hour or two, but the projects have been pretty varied.

Whispering Feather Earrings Kit

The kit always comes with an instruction booklet. This time, I don't really have any complaints about the instructions, they were pretty self-explanatory. You will need some jewelry pliers (round nose would be useful as would chain nose or bent chain nose or really just any two pairs from a basic set) and wire cutters and a ruler and that's about it.

I made both of mine side by side instead of doing one, then the other. You cut some chain and attach it to the earring hooks, then make three sets of V-shapes with the different beads provided (there were a few extras of most in case you drop something), then attach those to the wires. Lastly, you add leaf charms.

This was pretty easy and quick and gave me some ideas to explore further with materials from my stash. I think the colors went well together and the materials were decent quality. If you have metal sensitivities you will want to put some clear nail polish over the earring hooks as brass has some copper content and that can cause problems for people with certain metal sensitivities.

Here are the finished earrings:

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for Darn Good Beads of the Month because the materials were unbranded/not labeled. I feel that this is a typical project for this subscription and that the instructions were better than usual. I feel like this would be a great subscription for someone just starting out with beading as there are a lot of what I would call "stringing" projects with minimal tools required other than a basic set of jewelry pliers you could get at a craft store or Amazon for under $30. You learn some techniques and make a lot of more casual/weekend style jewelry and because the projects are usually quick, there isn't the same level of frustration you might experience with a more complicated project (plus, you know, instant gratification).

I had no idea about the clear nail polish on the earring hooks trick! Does that work for any metal sensitivity? In my life I have given away so many beloved pair of earrings because my ears are sensitive to just about everything but sterling silver. I better get my clear nail polish out!!!!

You will have to experiment with it to see if it works for you, and you will likely have to reapply most times you wear the earrings. I can’t wear anything but titanium long term (sterling silver is 7.5% copper which is enough to cause problems for me) but I can wear even fairly cheap earrings most of the day if I do the nailpolish thing.
