Our IPSY Glam Bag Plus September 2020 Review

Here is our info card complete with all of our items.

This is the second month of the new drawstring-style bags for the Plus level subscription and this one was a deep burgundy corduroy fabric.

It was also the second month of choice! Subscribers can pick THREE items per month with IPSY selecting the remaining two.

Now, on to the items!

Smith & Cult Nail Lacquer in 'Bite Your Kiss', 14 mL - Retail Value $18.00

This was my choice item!

Of course, I just had to choose this nail polish! I love Smith & Cult and they are one of those brands that sticks around nicely on my peeling prone nails. This deep eggplant shade is moody and oh-so fall ready. It is also a two coater, IMO. The first coat is sheer a little streaky and looks like a jelly. Add coat number two and you have a deeper jelly with a flawless finish. It looks almost black but there is enough purple here to give it a very interesting take on a bad gal fall mani.

Dark shades like this are super difficult to apply to my tiny nails without a little mess, but this application was easier than many others out there because the brush isn't huge inside this bottle.

Nature's Cartel Cream Eyeshadow Trio in Champagne Scandal, Tan Lines From Tahiti, and 90's Nude

FYI: I couldn't find these same shades in cream formulas, but I did find them in pressed pans here!

This was my choice item!

I snagged this trio as my second item choice this month. I don't really need more shadows but these shades looked pretty and I liked that these were creams. These are pretty sheer but very buildable, and super smooth and buttery. You could actually probably use them as highlight and contour shades if you really wanted to. I loved each of them on my lids because they had that very trendy sort of sheer shimmer look that stayed put all day. These shades also fit really well into most of my minimal "no makeup" looks. All in all, these are pretty and versatile, and I am happy I picked 'em!

Pretty, pretty, pretty.

Dr. Brant Skincare PoreDermabrasion, 2 oz – Retail Value $58.00

This was my choice item!

I specifically picked this item because I wanted to compare it to another exfoliating fave of mine, Kate Somerville's Exfolikate! One of the biggest differences is that this formula uses micro-size aluminum oxide crystals while Exfolikate uses silica for the physical exfoliation element. The aluminum crystals felt smaller on my face and a little more gentle. Both exfoliators use salicylic acid for chemical exfoliation. Exfolikate also has the addition of lactic acid and I will say I liked that formula a little more than this one, though both are pretty great and give similar results. Simply add a little to your damp face, and massage for a minute. You can then leave this on for 1-2 minutes then rinse off with water. I recommend rinsing in the shower because you really want to be sure to get all those crystals safely off your face! I tend to use something like this 1-2 times a week to help with my overall skin texture and shrink my giant pores.

STARSKIN Close-Up Coconut Bio-Cellulose Second Skin Firming Face – Retail Value $12.07 (€10)

STARSKIN Glowstar Foaming Peeling Perfection Puff  – Retail Value $12.07 (€10)

IPSY chose this for me!

STARSKIN makes one of my favorite masks, but I wasn't a huge fan of this month's mask. It was one of those cellulose sorts that feel like actual skin on your face, but It felt kind of dry somehow? I highly recommend applying the excess serum to your face before applying the mask, but this still was one that felt dry after like 5 minutes. Meh. The yellow pouch wasn't a mask at all, but some sort of magical peel puff! I opened the outer sleeve and inside was a smaller pouch of liquid and a branded puff. I opened the smaller pouch, added a few drops of water, and poured it in the bigger one, massaging it to create a mixture. I then soaked the puff and rubbed it on my face for about 3 minutes. Then, a rinse with water! I did find this left my face feeling ridiculously awesome. But the steps are a bit of a hassle. You can actually store the puff inside the mixture to use a few times, but you'll need a ziplock bag unless you want to spill it everywhere.

There actually is a puff inside the yellow pack along with a smaller pouch of peeling liquid.

And here is a peek at the peeling liquid!

PUREHEALS Centella 80 Eye Cream, 30 mL – Estimated Value $? (buy a 15 mL pot for $33.90)

IPSY chose this item for me!

IPSY surely knows I am a Centella enthusiast! I really love this calming ingredient. I also liked this gel sort of eye cream. It has many delights inside! A few callouts (other than my beloved cica) include niacinamide, squalane, tea antioxidants, sodium hyaluronate, and more! It actually has so many different things I would literally want to see in an eye cream to provide hydration, reduce irritation, and soften fine lines. The interesting thing about this product is that this tube is literally twice the size of the pot you can buy directly from the brand, which leaves its retail value as a point of confusion for me. Either way, I love it and I am glad it's in my bag!

Verdict: I am pretty pleased with my IPSY Glam Bag Plus this month! I am loving the option to pick three items. IPSY did a fine job selecting my other items, thought he mask was a bit of a bust. Who knew? Otherwise, the value and brands inside were great for my tastes. I love the nail polish and eye shadows and plan on using them a lot this fall. The Dr. Brant exfoliator is pretty great, and of course, I loved that eye cream. Super excited for choice next month!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You'll likely start with September as your first month. As of publication, there was no IPSY waitlist!

Value Breakdown: I totaled a value of around $100, not including the Nature's Cartel Cream Eyeshadow Trio and PUREHEELS Centella 80 Eye Cream. This box costs $25 meaning each of the 5 items has an average cost of $5.00. I calculated both masks as a single item and the trip of shadows as a single kit, though you can buy all of these items individually.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

If anyone else has been dealing with bags that seem opened/tampered with…I just emailed ipsy about that issue with my bag, and they let me know that it’s because they seal bags when they create them, then reopen them to add your add-ons if you order any. I thought that was super interesting!

But they also let me know that they’ve recently started resealing those bags with tape, so woo, hopefully no more missing hero products!

Still waiting for mine to arrive. Will probably come after reviews are due, so annoying.

Well phoney. I was hoping for something exciting to talk me out of canceling. I waited too long last month and pretty much either despised the choice items or already had multiple of the ones I wanted. Plus is the last tier I subscribe to so I’ll just have to get a regular glam bag if I get the urge to buy some add ons. I guess being home only about 6 total weeks due to Covid work schedule overseas has burnt me out on product overload. Allure is going to go as well. Its kind of a bittersweet goodbye because most of my bags for the last 5 or so years have brought me lots of joy. I’ll return when my interest is sparked and my schedule slows down enough that I dont go home to open 10 boxes at once and take 4 of the items with me when I leave.

I’m not sure I have this right, can someone confirm if this is correct:

$12 Ipsy allows you to choose 1 item.
$25 Ipsy allows you to choose 3 items.
$50 Ipsy allows you to choose 1 item?

It’s the Ipsy Ultimate $50 subscription I’m not sure about. If this is correct, I would rather pay for two Ipsy Plus, $25, subscriptions than buy the Ipsy Ultimate, $50, sub. Or really just one Ipsy Plus would do the trick. I like having more choice. Currently I am at the original Ipsy level and am want to upgrade, but am not sure at what level.

Will someone let me know if you only get 1 choice item with the Ipsy Ultimate 50 dollar sub? Or are there 3 choices like Ipsy Plus. This will help me decide which one to upgrade to.

Thanks!

SquirrelyGirl

Yea, correct. Only plus has the 3 choice model right now. They may roll it out to other tiers later. This is only the 2nd month of them offering 3 choice items for plus and they are concentrating on that for now

Dea

I agree that six choices out of 10 beat one choice out of 10, so if you can and want to pay $50, get two Plus accounts instead of one Ultimate.

I only have one Plus account, but it’s enough for my wallet and face and I’m a huge fan of the new format.

Miss the cute bags, though.

LJ

Yep, 1 choice for $50 for ultimate. The you pick 3 for Plus is new as of 2 months ago. Ultimate tends to mean more items vs “premium” options like Boxy, in my opinion at least. There are some items in Ultimate that are never offered in Plus. If you go for the 2 Plus, I’d suggest using a different email and making your profile quiz responses different to get different selections for choice. Hope that helps and good luck!

Leslie

Thanks!

Laura

You only choose 1 product with Ipsy ultimate.

Reply ButtonReply

Leslie

Sorry, I just figured it out. I should have looked at an Ipsy Ultimate review to find out what I wanted to know. One choice for Ipsy Ultimate.

I guess not everyone prioritizes choice over quantity of products, but to me I don’t see why one would choose Ultimate over Plus. I love the idea of skewing the profile to skincare heavy and then choosing 3 items. If I need a makeup item, I can choose it with one of the choice selections. I’m really excited to upgrade!

I just had a figure it out moment with IPSY myself. I just get the regular glam bag and pay at least an extra $15 for sample sized add ons. I just updated to the plus, it’s the same price and I get more full sized products. Don’t know why it took me so long to connect the dots 🤣 IPSY also gives plus memberships to all their employees, so it must be their best “product” so to speak.

Rose

I hate the drawstring bag. As it is, the size isn’t big enough to be useful. Ironically, I much preferred the size of the GBP bags over the standard Ipsy size, and I was bummed when I saw that Ipsy was switching them out.

Reply ButtonReply

Marion

So many repeats this month! I’m glad I skipped. It seems like they are picking bag designs that work better for the drawstring bag — this corduroy one looks good, & (this may be a controversial opinion) I think the bag design for October works best on the drawstring bag.

I got the Centella eye cream as well. I haven’t tried it except to review, so we’ll see how it goes. It seems nice, nut I’m working my way through the Goldfaden Eye Bright I got eons ago. That I really like.

I haven’t been able to wear eye makeup much since I had cataract surgery, so I haven’t been reviewing color cosmetics for my Ipsy. I’m a little worried they’ll stop offering it to me.

Reply ButtonReply

z

Okay, this is the immature kid in me coming out but I read Nature’s Cartel as Nature’s Call and I said to myself “who wants kaka colored cosmetics”? Now I can’t unsee it.

Reply ButtonReply

Doreen

Now all I can think of is Ace Ventura when Nature Calls and “Shikaka, Shikaka, Shikaka”!

Reply ButtonReply

Dea

I got the Centella eye cream, too, and loved it enough to pick up another one for $12 in the “second chance” sale. I adored all the items. Since they started ultra personalization, this has been hitting it out of the park for me. I canceled Allure and now GBP is my only beauty sub. I skewed my profile heavy to skincare and they deliver. Super happy camper here.

Also, it looks like the July disaster taught ipsy to trash their contract with Pitney-Worthless-Bowes. GOOD.

Reply ButtonReply

Nan

Nope. My August regular Glam Bag was shipped thru Pitney-Bowes and still hasn’t been delivered.

Reply ButtonReply

Piper

Mine hasn’t come either, but with DHL. So they aren’t any better.

Nan

Oops. Sorry I typed that wrong. It’s my September Glam Bag that I haven’t received yet thru P-B.

Amy

October will be my first of the new and improved Plus but I bought that eye cream in add ons, my skin loves Centella!! I haven’t tried it yet but it’s next up for me and I can’t wait!

Megan K.

Centella Club should be a thing. We need matching satin bomber jackets with embroidered cica leaves, STAT.

I loved my Plus! Loving the three item choice. Ipsy choices for me were great. Not loving how boxes are crushed in the envelope mailer.

Reply ButtonReply

Rachel

Same – the last couple of months I have received crushed boxes – last month, my Complex Culture brush box got smushed – this month my Yensa bronzer. Ipsy must feel that it would be less expensive to replay the occasional damaged item in the new envelope mailer than sending boxes?

Reply ButtonReply

Alice

My brush box was crushed, too, it renders gifting boxed items impossible.

Alice

I loved my Plus! Loving the three item choice. Ipsy choices for me were gr3wt. Not loving how boxes are crushed in the envelope mailer.

FYI if anyone is into those bio cellulose masks, WHEN BEAUTY is having a sale on some of them on their website! I got a bio cellulose mask in my Allure box awhile back from WHEN and have been OBSESSED since!

Reply ButtonReply

Jacki

I do enjoy those masks. I found them 10/$8 at Costco about a month ago. I didn’t need masks, but I needed these masks 😂

Reply ButtonReply

Jean

I love your honest, thorough reviews. I haven’t received my Septemebr GBP yet and missed choice but if I get the Nature’s Cartel cream shadows I will certainly give them a try based on your review! Same for the Smith & Cult polish. I don’t do color on my nails but that would be so moody and fall-ish on my toes. Kinda hope I get it.

I’ve Not Recvd My Ipsy Glam Plus, Ultimate & Neither has My Daughter Recvd hers. I’m skipping a month after I Email Ipsy it’s 2nd month NOT receiving until Couple Days before Withdrawing money for Next Month. I just wanted to Share this with you~ I’m Uncertain IF you Know that IF you go in your IPSY App Or Find Email stating they Sent out you can Look @ What you Recvd in Bags to “Review” & Then you can See What Products your Supposef to Receive, Good Luck My Dear! 😃

Megan K.

I was surprised by how versatile they were. I think its because they are on the sheer side? I hope if you get them you like them too. 😊

Reply ButtonReply

Tiffany

I had totally different items! I was hoping you also got the Soapbox Coconut Milk Hair Mist cause I wanted to see your take on it. I have frizzy, wavy hair that I like to air dry. I finally found a product to tame the frizz without heat! I wasn’t expecting much from it, but it might be my all-time favorite IPSY find.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Hey Tiffany! I actually got that in my Ultimate last month (https://www.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/2020/08/ipsy-glam-bag-ultimate-review-aug-2020.html). I liked the formula, but the scent was not for me. I have a hard time with tropical smells for some reason. As my husband says, “You would rather smell like an old book or a campfire.” and he isn’t totally wrong. 😂

Reply ButtonReply

Pink5

I got that as a choice item.

I tried it yesterday and was not at all impressed. My hair is straight and doesn’t frizz, so maybe it was just the wrong type of product for me.

Reply ButtonReply

Deb

Love the nail polish and shadow trio. I didn’t get either as choices or I would have happily picked them.

Jenny

I signed up for September because I specifically wanted this deep burgundy corduroy bag. Well, they sent their idea of a special intro bag for a first bag. The bag is hideous and has Ipsy logo written all over it. I am so angry because the only reaso. I signed up was for that bag. I have been on the regular $12 tier for years and wanted that bag. I don’t k ow why I was so drawn to it but there it is. And it blew my mi d because they do t mention anywhere that they have an intro welcome type bag that is different. Never anywhere do they say that. Once Anahi. The subscription service finds a way to disappoint.

Reply ButtonReply

Heather

From what I’ve seen, a lot of the burgundy draw string bags were damaged when people got them or
became damaged almost immediately. Like the entire side was ripped. Apparently the quality was way worse than it looked like it would be in photos. Maybe that had an impact on the amount they had available.

Reply ButtonReply

Jenny

Thanks for sharing ing that. It almost makes me feel better. Lol

Also Beth

I would email them and let them know that you’re disappointed and would love to be able to get the corduroy bag! No guarantees I’m sure, but I know back when they were testing the drawstring bags there were a few people who complained and were given the planned bag for the month after asking for it.

(Just obviously be nice if you do ask, I’m sure all of these changes weren’t customer service’s idea!)

Reply ButtonReply

Joy-Not the Other One

Hi Jenny, just wondering-do you think they maybe when you signed up they started you with August and you just haven’t gotten your September yet? The August bag was pink with IPSY in silver on the front. It sounds like that is what happened. If not, you should definitely email them and ask for this bag. I have always had wonderful customer service from IPSY. It does take a couple of days for a response but I’m sure they will make it right for you.

Reply ButtonReply

Jenny

No. After. I repeat, after my payment went through; they said I was getting a special editors welcome bag and starting in October I would be getting the regular bags. I checked my items and they are all the same as everyone else’s. So I basically just got ripped off on the bag situation. It is pink like a satin material with pictures of clip art all over it. The Ipsy logo very prominently repeating in the pattern. Completely unusable.
