Fruit For Thought September 2020 “Apple Cider Donut” Review

This is my first month reviewing Fruit For Thought, and I couldn't wait to dig in! Read below to see what I thought of my first box!

Straight out of the gate I was impressed with the presentation: I love the coordinating art they use on the box and postcard, but the fruit ribbon took it to new heights! While a simple addition, I really felt like I was opening a gift rather than a subscription box. The postcard included the list of contents that were included in our box this month with some coupon codes and social media information.

Sun Bloom Soap Works Spiced Apple Soap Sample - Buy a full-size bar for $6.00 (unable to find Spiced Apple variety)

Autumn is my favorite season and one of the reasons why is...apple pie. We live in the country and happen to be blessed with an abundant number of apple trees that are very productive...maybe even too productive!! In the last week, I have made four apple pies, six pie packs, and eight quarts of applesauce. Thank goodness the kids are so helpful or I would still be peeling! Anyways, Charlie commented that he wishes we could have an apple pie in the oven at all times because the smell is his favorite. Well surprise, surprise Charlie, this sweet little handcrafted soap smells almost identical to apple pie!! Although tiny in size, it is mighty in fragrance and lathers up really well. The scent fades quickly after drying but leaves the sink area a little sweeter (and prettier) than without it. While I enjoy the spiced apple variety, I am really intrigued by the lavender woods scent. I just might have to use their included coupon and try it out!

McSteven's Spiced Apple Cider - Buy a 5-pack for $10.95 (currently on sale for $9.95)

Nothing takes the nip out the fresh autumn air like hot apple cider, and this spiced variety is quite tasty! Like a typical mix, you add the contents to hot water, stir, and enjoy. It was flavorful and sweet, with a perfect addition of cinnamon. With our crazy Minnesota temperatures, our high yesterday was 51, so the kids and I each enjoyed a mug of this goodness with our next item below!

Erin Baker's The Original Breakfast Cookie in Caramel Apple 1oz - Buy a box of 12 (3 oz) for $19.99

Who doesn't love a cookie for breakfast?! While I generally have a strawberry, banana, and spinach smoothie for breakfast, I sometimes lose track of time and need a breakfast to go. These little cookies are perfect to stash in my purse or glove box! With 2 grams of fiber in each cookie, these tasty morsels are actually quite filling. As I am a bit of a sweet addict, I would like to taste a little more of the caramel flavoring come through, but overall it was pretty tasty, and fit in well with this month's theme.

Naturally, when mom gets a treat, my little men have to give it a test as well. Both were fans of the apple cider, and while Hank gobbled up his half of the breakfast cookie in a flash, Charlie wasn't sold on the flavor, and graciously gave me his licked on leftovers...#momlife

Mrs. Miller's Homemade Apple Butter 9 oz - Buy a 3 pack for $25.00

I am a hoarder of apples, and while I didn't make my own apple butter this year, I have in the past, and it is messy, sticky work. While it is work that I love, I enjoy reaping the rewards of someone else's work too, and Mrs. Miller's family does a fantastic job making their apple butter. This thick, caramelized spread has a resemblance to applesauce, but is cooked longer and has a glossier finish. Containing no corn syrup, and made from fresh apples, we dug right into the jar with our spoons to give this a go, and I actually had to cut the kids off! I noticed they added cider vinegar to their apple butter, and the faint acidity was a welcome surprise! We actually added a few scoops of this into our apple pie, and loved the results!

I think adding apple butter to my pie filling is going to be my new secret weapon! (As you can see, my dad requests extra sugar on his crust....)

Greenwich Bay Trading Co. Apple Cider Shea Butter Lotion, 16 oz. - Retail Value $8.75

If anyone else is using as much hand sanitizer as I have been, lotion is quickly becoming my other best friend. This apple cider shea butter version is a bit on the light side consistency-wise, but isn't greasy. The apple cider fragrance has more cinnamon hints than an apple, and has quite the staying power, but in my experience so far, has not burned or irritated my dry hands. In my opinion, the best part of this product is the black cat featured on the label, as it reminds me of my feisty feline Rex:

Rex enjoying an outdoor photoshoot before the snow flies!

To go with our next product we received an info card stating that Little Big Farm Foods is a Women & Veteran-owned business! Plus they included a coupon code!

Apple Cider Doughnut Mix, 18 oz. - Retail Value $4.99

Every year at the fair my first go-to treat is a bag of mini doughnuts. As the fair was canceled this year, I missed out on tradition, so seeing this box made my day! I was ready to get baking until I realized a doughnut pan is needed to bake these in. I don't own a doughnut pan, so sadly this box sits unused in my baking cupboard, but on Fruit For Thought's info card, they suggest using a muffin pan. If you have any alternate suggestions on how to bake these (cake form/muffins/bread) please let me know so I can give this family-owned mix a try.

Apple Cider Poo-Pourri, 2 oz. - Retail Value $9.99

How does one describe apple cider poo-pourri?! I must say it fits in with the apple cider theme perfectly, and although a bit unconventional, it has proven itself useful! The instructions state to "shake well, spritz 3-5 times into the toilet bowl, and proceed to do your apple bottom thing." My kids find this absolutely hilarious and now cannot wait to excuse themselves to the restroom!

The Verdict: This is my first Fruit for Thought box and I must say the curation was so thoughtful, practical, and fun! Like I said above, everything from the packaging to the family-owned/boutique type items creates a gift like-experience. I absolutely adored the fruit theme, and while I was a bit bummed I didn't have the proper pan for the apple cider doughnuts, I did use all of the other items. I calculated a total value of about $43 for everything in this box, and know if I purchased items separately I would have to pay significantly more than that in additional shipping costs. This box emphasizes thoughtful curation over high-value items and I feel this box contained useful items that were not only great for myself but would make a wonderful gift as well.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box will be the October box (the theme is pumpkin chai!).

Value Breakdown: This box costs $45.90 ($39.95 + $5.95 shipping), which means you are paying about $5.10 for each of the 9 items.

I signed up for this subscription based on this review. But, they apparently oversold the October box and now I’m on a waitlist. The email about the reversal was worded weirdly, in my opinion. I initially thought I was being welcomed as a new subscriber, only to find out that “You will be wait listed and contacted if an October Pumpkin Chai Themed box becomes available.” I think they already accepted my payment for the October box, but the email doesn’t address that. Boo.

Dawn, sorry for the confusion. You did subscribe in time to get the October box! Anyone was was subscribed before the email is getting the October box. The email yesterday stated we had sold out yesterday, so any new subscriptions after the email would start with November (and be wait listed for October!) I know you will love the October box!

That is such a bummer Dawn!! I’m so sorry to hear that! I’d be really disappointed too. On a positive note, the November honey fig theme sounds fantastic…I’ve been keeping an eye out for product spoilers on their Facebook and Instagram page…hopefully we will see something soon!

I love the idea of this box & the curation seems well thought out (though the theme seemed more “apple cider” than “Apple cider donut” besides for the mix) but this is almost the cost of one of those seasonal boxes that have way more value so I couldn’t justify it. Enjoyed reading your review though!

Such handsome boys, all three (incl Rex!) of them. 💜 The apple/apple pie-apple cider theme sounds really nice.
Autumn is my number 1 with a bullet favorite season, and I’m loving the cooler overcast days – 55° today. The air gets all crisp and the mood becomes Halloween-y. If it was up to me, Halloween would be in stores all year round. I’m so glad summer is over, the heat just kills me.

Thank you so much for the sweet comments Lux! 55 is a perfect temperature! I love jeans and sweaters! While I enjoy summer, I am happy to have a change in seasons!!

Great review as you have incorporated everything into your daily life. Nice to see a box where everything is useable. Your pie looks amazing and your boys are adorable.

Thank you Connie! <3 It was nice to use everything in the box! I can't wait to see what the pumpkin chai theme includes!

JackieCupcake

You could do it in a loaf pan and it would come out just fine. I would say 350 for 30-45 minutes you’d be good. You could do the sugar on top before it bakes, or add the butter and put it on afterwards for a nice crunchy glaze.

Becca Peterson

Oooo that’s a good idea. I like that! Thanks for the suggestion JackieCupcake!!

Boxtopus!

I’ve been wanting to subscribe to this box for months now, but I can’t justify the $40 a month. If they would lower it to $35, I would jump on it.

I’m excited to see your review on it!

The price was just recently lowered from $44.99 to $39.99. You do get bigger discounts with 3, 6 or 12 month subscriptions.

It’s still just too pricey for me. I’m picky about my flavors and treats (partly due to a severe corn intolerance), and if I don’t like the edible goodies they send, then it was a waste of money.

That was an excellent review! Loved how you incorporated all the products into your life, and your boys are so beautiful! 🥰

Very thorough review! Your apple pie crust looks perfect. I’m an amazing cook but baking, nope. Now I want apple cider donuts.

p.s. the boys are so adorable

Thank you for your kind words Zo!! My mom taught me how to make pie, and while I HATE making crust, it turns out pretty good…what a mess though! Don’t those donuts look amazing? Although I know you can make them in a muffin pan, I have donut pan on my shopping list because I just have to try them that way! <3<3<3

I am weirdly enamored of the tiny soap sample; it’s so cute! And it’s as good as a potpourri sachet in the drawer I currently stored it in.

I took the Poo-Pourri & the lotion to the bathroom at work, & it seems like people are LOVING the Poo-Pourri. (Previously, there was only a B&BW Warm Vanilla Sugar body spray in there.)

Thanks for commenting Marion! Isn’t that soap adorable? I can’t get over it. The kids are obsessed with it. I’m trying to ration it because it’s so pretty and smells so good, but the kids want to wash with it all day long!!

Pamela

As noted on the post card insert, the donut mix can be used in muffin pans too!
