Black Girl Magic August 2020 Review

This month's Black Girl Magic Box came with an August newsletter that focused on tips to handle insomnia and a Magical Affirmation card.

Satin Pillowcase & Sleep Mask Set

I LOVE a cute satin set, especially when it's in my favorite color! This pink sleep set is incredibly soft. While I generally don't get much use out of sleep masks because I don't like material over my eyes, I could see myself using this. The material is pretty light, so barely noticeable, and again, incredibly soft. The pillowcase is the same - soft and protective on my hair and skin.

Essential Oil Roller

I'm so bummed there is no identification of this item because I would love to buy more of it! This roller gives really nice hints of lavender and glides smoothly on the skin, making it a nice on-the-go item for smell fresh ups throughout the day. A little goes a long way as this roller is very fragrant. I put just a little on the inside of my wrist, and found myself continuously smelling my wrist because the scent is captivating!

SOS Bliss Eucalyptus Bath Bomb - Retail Value $6.00

I haven't had the opportunity to try SOS Bliss products yet, but the fact that this is vegan and cruelty-free is a HUGE plus for me! The smell of eucalyptus lemon is divine and not overpowering. Just nice light and fresh notes of citrus. This product contains eurosalt and coconut oil which are two products that are moisturizing to the skin. The colors in this bomb are also beautiful! Looking forward to turning my bath water into a gold and sage oasis.

AVALAH Classic Candle, 3 oz. travel size - Buy a full size for $25.00

Fall is steadily approaching and I am ready to light all the candles! Add this Avalah travel candle to that list. Avalah describes this candle scent as "light and masculine" and "developed for the modern classy man." Upon first smell, I did notice a light cologne scent..and I really loved it! It's not overpowering and works as a nice bedroom fragrance to help with insomnia. I don't think this candle is gender-specific at all. Everyone can enjoy this calming aroma!

Avalah also included this cute thank you/info card that includes their phone number, website, and social media handles. A very nice touch!

A Mindful Evening by David Dillard-Wright, Retail Value $14.99

A Mindful Evening is a great book for those just starting out with mindfulness practices all the way up to those that are already solid in their practice. Topics range from worry to speaking kindly to yourself and pages present both quotes and exercises.

This book is visually appealing as well! I'm excited to delve more into the chapters.  My favorite section so far is "Become Rooted with Gravity".

Aesthete Tea "Moonlight", 1 oz - Retail Value $7.90

This is my first time trying Aesthete's Tea brand, but it certainly won't be my last! In the flavor Moonlight, this tea would be perfect on a chilly fall night looking at -- the moon 🙂 Upon first taste, I thought there may be hints of lavender. After reading the ingredients, I notice what I was tasting was more of that chamomile. The lemon balm and coconut flakes give this tea a light citrusy/smokey flavor as if you're sitting around a campfire.  Moonlight supports anti-anxiety and sleep, so grab your favorite tea mug and get ready to drift away to a blissful nightcap!

Fashion Glasses

I'm not someone who wears glasses regularly so I really enjoy playing with fashion glasses to add some character to an outfit.  These glasses are really cute and chic! At first, I thought they may be blue light glasses that help with eye strain from electronics. They may actually be that.  There sadly wasn't an identification for this item so I don't know for sure. I did feel like they helped with strain some. Let me know in the comments what you think! Either way, they are definitely cute and fashionable!

The Verdict: This was my first time receiving the Black Girl Magic Box and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I'm really excited about scanning A Mindful Evening more and practicing the mindfulness exercises. I'll also be enjoying a cup of the Aesthete tea while sitting in my living room with the AVALAH candle lit. Can you tell I'm ready for fall?

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Sadly, no. HOWEVER, if you have a favorite item, you may be able to find that item on its specific brand page. From Black Girl Magic Box:

Boxes ship bi-monthly on the 25th. Please order by the 15th of that month to receive the current shipment.

Value Breakdown: This bi-monthly box costs $63.94 ($54.95 + $8.99 shipping), which means each of the 7 items has an average cost of $9.13. I estimate that I received at least $28.89 worth of value inside, but that’s not counting the candle, satin pillowcase & sleep mask set, essential oil roller, and fashion glasses, which I couldn’t find an individual value for. I feel the cost of the box is worth it based on the 7 items I received, but looking forward to the next couple of boxes to get a better idea of what to expect value-wise.

Keep track of your subscriptions by adding this box to your subscription list or wishlist!

I’m Curious to know what you all think the margins would be if a company charges $25 including shipping for something like this. If you go on the Instagram or website, you would see that they have products from small businesses which often have higher priced items because they are small batch. Unlike some other companies which order everything from China. (The other tJ Maxx style boxes) I think it’s a very pretty box although obviously not for everyone.

Good box, good outside of the lines items included. But IMO, missing a skincare item for the price, and therefore overpriced… Can’t wait to see how and what it evolves into though! 🤓

I would honestly LOVE to see a skincare item. Hopefully the next one!

I agree with others- some nice stuff here but I am not at all into boxes that don’t clearly label their products. Even if they provided an overview on their insert that would be okay.

For $60, I don’t feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. Though I would assume those are blue light glasses as the magazine mentions that.

This looks like a nice box, I like the products, though not that some aren’t labeled. They need to drop price by at least $20, it overpriced.

Those for sure look like blue blockers! Bummer they’re not great at giving items ID

Looks like a lovely box, but not at that price point. $25 including shipping is what I would pay for those items from a box, if brands were identified better, since that’s about what I would pay at a TJ Maxx or Gabes for those items and I generally think of sub boxes as a curated TJ Maxx cart

Off topic kind of, but I saw your comment mentioning Gabe’s and thought “hey, somebody else who knows and shops at Gabe’s, yay” since it the chain has a relatively small region. I’m in northern WV, not sure where you are. I worked at Gabe’s the summer after I graduated high school (a long, long time ago, when you had to check every inch of an item for tears or defects, and when the price tags were still attached by straight pins…my job was being one of the ‘pinners’ lol). The Morgantown store was the first to get the full Marshall’s-style makeover and that has since been done at the stores to my knowledge.

I agree this box is way overpriced, and the oil roller lacking ANY labelling is concerning, and would be even for a <$20 box.
