BoxyCharm Premium August 2020 Review

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included. It looks like my assortment this month is box #48.

Now, on to the items!

Sunday Riley A+ High-Dose Retinoid Serum, 1 fl oz - Retail Value $85.00

Hello, Sunday. I managed to actually pick this during choice time (an event I generally miss because of forgetfulness...). This is one of the products I can always make it to the bottom of. It is a really excellent formula for anyone who is wanting to erase fine lines and wrinkles and promote cell turnover. There are actually SO many great things inside the bottle but I will focus on my favorites: retinol and CoQ10. Retinol is a form of vitamin A that benefits breakouts as much as it does aging skin. So if you are in that weird skin purgatory that comes in your 30s, this is something you should 100% try. CoQ10 is a bigtime antioxidant that especially helps skin with previous sun damage (AKA my face) by boosting collagen production. This is the sort of product you want to put on after cleansing but before your final moisturizer. It can also make your skin a little sun-sensitive, so wear your sunscreen.

Ciaté London New England Editor Palette - Retail Value $32.00 (currently sold out)

I have always had mixed feelings about the Ciaté brand because some items knock it out of the park while others leave me feeling pretty 'meh.' My expectations for this palette weren't sky high, but the mix of colors really caught my attention, especially since they were inspired by New England in the fall. I used to live in Boston, so anything New England is very nostalgic for me. At first, I didn't think this was a very 'fall' palette at all, but the swatches felt more on that theme than the palette looks, especially since the cover has more of a tropical leaves look. Most of these shade performed really beautifully! The metallics were like butter and the pigment was great. The mattes worked better with fingertips, I think because the warmth of my hands warmed them up and made them more creamy. They did work pretty well with a brush too, just expect more fallout. All in all, I was really pleasantly surprised by this one and I love the colors.

Totally getting the fall color story with these swatches.

Too Faced Born This Way Ethereal Setting Powder in 'Universal Shade', 17 g - Retail Value $33.00

I don't generally get super stoked over translucent setting powder but this one is really great. It does the job of both mattifying my look but also adding a little dewy radiance in the best way. I was surprised that such a lightweight powder made my face look so much smoother. This powder also contains hyaluronic acid which adds a little hydration while still giving a velvet finish.

MAC Cosmetics Amplified Lipstick in 'Vegas Volt', 3 g - Retail Value $19.00

It probably surprises no one that I already own this lipstick. 'Vegas Volt' was released a few years ago and has lasted as part of MAC's permanent collection. With a warm coral shade in their silky smooth amplified formula, it isn't hard to see why. As a lover of bold lips, this summertime coral was irresistible then, and still gorgeous now. While it would be super easy to write this shade off as a spring/summer only sort of deal, I have found it is striking in the fall and winter too, especially with a big top knot and a chic black turtleneck.

Yep, 100%!

Laura Geller Fortifying Lashes Eyelash Primer, 7.5 mL - Retail Value $24.00 (currently sold out)

As someone who always struggled to cover up white lash primers, seeing this one was black was great! I actually found this worked well enough as a mascara on its own. The brush felt old school, tightly packed with thin bristles that grabbed all of my lashes and evenly coated them. It does take a while to dry though, which is the only real downside. I layered my fave mascara on top and honestly, it looked as bold as it always has. So I have mixed feelings here. It didn't do much as a primer (for me, at least) but also made a fine enough mascara on its own.

Afterspa Slip-On Exfoliator - Retail Value $18.00

My last item was a slip-on exfoliator. I actually really loved this thing! I slid it over my palm and gave my legs the best exfoliation treat they have had in a very long time. It was plush enough to hold lots of my fave body wash and create a nice lather too.

Verdict: My BoxyCharm Premium had a value of $211 which is more than fair for a $35 box. I actually really liked this assortment! The only real miss was the eyelash primer. Everything else was very nice. It was certainly an improvement over last month. I am very pleased to have a new bottle of A+ and a really gorgeous new palette. The lipstick is an old favorite that I am happy to revisit and the powder was a dream on my face. I am very happy with this Boxy Premium.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Not gonna lie, when I saw the first box picture I thought that afterspa thing was a roll of toilet paper & I thought “cute, but a few months too late”!

Megan, we are box twins this month! I always love to see what you think of the items we both received. I received Fast Play for the MAC color and it is perfect for me!

Megan K.

I just googled a swatch of Fast Play and it is so pretty! Glad we are both happy box twins!

I got the same exact box with Mac -Vegas Volt lipstick. Im very happy with my Premium box this month and my regular box was equally satisfying as well. Great month for Boxy Charm. Thank God for not getting another orange plastic makeup bag with hanging balls…..lol

Megan K.

Yeah, I think one blinding orange bag is enough for quite a while!

I got this variation! Of course I love the A+. I was pleasantly surprised to receive the powder, since it was an item offered as a second choice for some whose previous box had a mishap. My lipstick is Fast Play which surprisingly looks good on my cool toned skin considering the color is quite orange. The palette has some colors that appear to be swatched. I don’t love it enough to bother with a replacement. I’m very happy with this box

A+ was an A+ choice! I hoipe they continue to have these high-value skincare items as options going forward. it sets a nice tone for the whole box right from the start.

I got this same variation but with the lipstick shade Fast Play. I was happy with everything but the lash primer.

Same box for me, too, except for a different shade of Mac lipstick. Mine was more for me, which I appreciated, more cool toned.

I love Mac lipsticks so much I would take a whole box of them. Did you end up with Fast Play? I am seeing it in a few comments and now I want it too, lol!

I got this same box and I was very happy with it. It’s the first time in a long time that my Premium box actually felt premium to me.

The Ciate palette theme doesn’t really make sense. Like the reviewer said, it has tropical leaves on a pink background on the packaging, but it’s supposed to be New England in the Fall themed? This was obviously a slapped together plan. A few of the shades swatch completely different from how they look in the pans as well which makes it a bit difficult to use. That said, I expected it to be terrible and it’s not bad considering it’s not their normal made in Italy formula.

I also received a straight up orange lipstick. It wouldn’t be boxy unless I got a crazy lip shade. I was disappointed in the dollar store exfoliator thing, but overall still pleased with the box because to be fair it was great to pick and receive the A+ serum, and I also got the Too Faced powder which I haven’t tried yet. You can’t win them all.

Megan K.

Yeah, those palm leaves were confusing. I totally agree with the pans looking much different than actual swatches. I was really surprised!

Earlier this year (or maybe late last year) I tried that Laura Gellar primer, and really liked it. I think I got lucky and found quite a few at Marshall’s for $3.99 early this year, so after trying one I stocked up and bought all of the ones whose boxes looked like they hadn’t been touched. 🙂

Wow! That Ciate palette swatched beautifully! I totally get the fall vibe now.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

I was very surprised by it since they look much more pastel and soft in the pan. They do have a fall vibe swatched though!

Luna

I agree! I’m not one to get excited over palettes (since I don’t wear eyeshadow), but those colors are beautiful!
