Birchbox Review August 2020

As always, this month's Birchbox came with an info card that lists the products on the front, with a Birchbox Tip listed on the back.

Avya Skincare Anti-Aging Power Serum, 5 mL - Estimated Value $18.33 (Buy a full-size 30 mL for $110.00)

This Avya Skincare Anti-Aging Power Serum is a legitimate solution to reducing fine lines and wrinkles. I am by nature a very skeptical New Yorker, so I spend a lot of time with my brow furrowed, and as a result, the 11 lines between my brows are somewhat prominent. I've applied a tiny bit of this serum twice a day and the lines appear to have diminished. The serum in the little pump-action container dispenses as a light-colored thick cream. The serum is formulated with Avya's Signature Nanotech Molecule and pure micro-encapsulated vitamin C, which is an exclusive blend of peony, turmeric, and neem extracts. Immediately after application, I felt a slight tightening sensation, which made me ecstatic because I feel like that's how you know it's really working. The packaging is an elegant frosted bottle and a rose gold lid with a delicate etching on top. I'm thrilled to have received a product of this caliber in a Birchbox, bravo!

R+Co. SUN CATCHER Power C Boosting Leave-In Conditioner, 1 fl oz - Estimated Value $7.62 (Buy a full-size 4.2 fl oz for $32.00)

I love R+Co. products, especially their shampoo and conditioner combo. This SUN CATCHER Power C Boosting Leave-In Conditioner is another quality product from the brand. Formulated with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid to nourish any hair type while softening, detangling, and fighting frizz, this product is perfect for smoothing down the base of my locs. The one thing I will say is the scent is definitely an acquired taste. Personally, it reminds me of grandpa cologne, a kind of musky scent. I don't hate it but also, I don't love it. Thankfully, the nourishment it provides my hair is worth overlooking the scent. If you prefer products with a less fruity or floral scent, more along the lines of a musk or earthy smell, you will definitely enjoy this product.

thisworks Deep Sleep Pillow Spray, 5 mL - Estimated Value $1.93 (Buy a full-size 75 mL for $29.00)

I purchased this product in the past many times and also gifted it to family members over the holidays. thisworks Deep Sleep Pillow Spray is a unique product that promotes calm and tranquil relaxation, formulated with 100% pure essential oils, including lavender, patchouli, and chamomile. I as a person absolutely despise almost everything lavender-scented, but this combination is golden; I love it. I spritz one spray on my pillow before bed and am gently lulled off to sleep. I can't attest to the claims that 92% of individuals feel more alert the next morning because every morning is a struggle in my life; I am NOT a morning person. But this handy little product has proven to be a great way for me to unwind after a stressful day. I am happy to get this perfect little travel-size version of the product.

Reign Together CBD Massage Oil, no size listed - Buy a full-size 50 mL for $45.00

I love any CBD or hemp oil beauty or skincare products, and this Reign Together CBD Massage Oil is no exception. It has an awesome non-greasy formula that is 100% natural with broad-spectrum hemp oil and a light deliciously citrus scent. The product was designed to reduce stress, relieve sore muscles, and moisturize skin. I have a lot of pain in my neck, especially now, having my locs in, making my head heavier. I even see a chiropractor regularly for adjustments. Rubbing this oil on the tight knots in the back of my neck seemed to help soothe some of the strain and ache there. The product absorbed quickly and left the area feeling soft and moisturized as well. There was no irritating oily residue and the scent was not at all overpowering. Great to see a CBD product in a subscription box. I hope to receive many more.

Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain, 1.3 g - Estimated Value $9.53 (Buy a full-size 3 g for $28.00)

This Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain is the most adorable itty bitty tube of lip balm I've ever seen. It smells absolutely divine and flashes me back to high school. If I had to compare the scent to something, I would say it is the embodiment of the pink Starburst, which we all know was the absolute best Starburst. The scent is strong, so be aware of that if you're sensitive to smells. The product left my lips feeling super soft and hydrated. It has a thick consistency that absorbs into skin and leaves behind a natural pinkish tint, giving a rosy glow. The stain is formulated with avocado oil and rose flower wax to provide moisture and soften and soothe lips. I know you can also apply it to the apples of your cheeks but I've never been one for multi-use products like this, simply because anything that moisturizes my lips would be too oily for my face and would be sure to cause a breakout.

EXO Supply Co. Pure Remover Wipes (set of 2) - Estimated Value $1.80 (Buy a set of 10 for $8.99)

I love this concept of single-use nail polish removing wipes. The EXO Supply Co. Pure Remover Wipes come individually wrapped and soaked in an acetone-free organic plant-based polish remover that is formulated with conditioning essential oils. It has a very light, gentle scent, nothing like the strong lightheaded-inducing fumes of the polish remover from my past. I will say, it does take a bit of elbow grease and possibly two wipes to remove five fingers of polish. But the trade-off is not having nasty acetone absorbed into your body through your nail beds, so it's basically an even trade. These are perfect to toss in a bag, keep in the glove box, or your desk at work in case your nails start looking a mess and you just want to go au naturel.

Verdict: I think this was a good Birchbox! The products were all high-quality. I am thrilled to have the Avya Skincare Anti-Aging Power Serum. The bottle makes me feel fancy and I can actually FEEL the product working! I'm also happy with the Reign Together CBD Massage Oil. I only wish they had sent more, and I hope they continue to send CBD and hemp oil products in the future. The Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain is incredibly moisturizing on my lips and smells exactly like my favorite childhood candy. The EXO Supply Co. Pure Remover Wipes are an incredibly convenient alternative to walking around with chipped nails and looking like a hot mess. I'm also happy to receive a travel-size of the thisworks Deep Sleep Pillow Spray to throw in an overnight bag or a carry-on. Lastly, the R+Co. SUN CATCHER Power C Boosting Leave-In Conditioner works like a charm to soften and condition hair, despite its unique scent. Overall, I'm quite happy with everything included in this month's box. Some items, I wish were just a smidge bigger. The estimated total value of this month's box is $27.88 with the products that included sizes. If I had to estimate, the CBD Massage Oil is about 5 mL, which with some quick math, would bring the total to about $43.71. I think that's quite nice for this $15 box especially with some of the recognizable brands received.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. If you subscribe to Birchbox now, be sure to check the image on the sign-up page. The box design pictured at the bottom is the first month you'll receive.

How do I cancel? I have an annual and I’m over it. If my first box was October 2019, do I need to cancel now?

That pillow spray gives me the WORST nightmares. It’s a shame, because I enjoy the scent!

Boxy Fox

I got the same box and except for the R & co everything felt tiny and the lip stain broke immediately.

Naomi Pandolfi

Hey Boxy Fox, yeah everything is super small, I chalk it up to it being a sample box. But one day it would be nice to see a full size product tossed in there. Like Ipsy does with the glam bag! I’m keeping my fingers crossed lol. But def contact Birchbox about any damaged or defective products, I would image they would send out a replacement.

Great review Naomi! I felt the same way about the R&Co conditioner – it STINKS but it made my hair so so soft! I just wish it smelled like……anything else. Flowers maybe? But nope!

You really sold me on this box, despite not needing it, lol.

Thanks for the great read!

MrsLittle

What’s the problem with acetone? It occurs naturally in the body in small amounts. And certain essential oils can be bad for you, in addition to being pretty bad for the environment.

Naomi Pandolfi

Acetone itself isn’t toxic but exposure to acetone base nail polish removers can dehydrate the nail plate, cuticles and the surrounding skin – nails can become dry and brittle, and cuticles can become dry, flaky, red and irritated. Yes, unstable essential oils can be dangerous as well, I myself prefer to only use products with essential oils that you rinse off immediately just to be safe. Hope this helps!

MrsLittle

Fair enough! It just sounded like in the review that it was dangerous and I wanted to clarify. Thanks! I enjoy your reviews!

Joy

As far as I know, the primary concern with acetone remover is that it is extremely drying to both your nails and cuticles. If you use it on a frequent basis it can make your nails a bit weak and brittle. Some people prefer non-acetone removers for this reason.

tammy g.

birchbox…can you please make a box without any hair products…just once or twice …please.

Liz

I will say, with the nail polish remover wipes the key is to let the solution sink in a bit on your nails. At first it seems like it’s not working, but once the solution has had a chance to penetrate the polish, it easily comes right off with another swipe.

Your reviews are the best, once again making me think I can’t possibly live without these products…despite not needing them and not being tempted at all before reading your review!

Joy-Not the Other One

In my opinion, not only is the strawberry starburst the best one, it is the ONLY one worth eating. Did you know that you can now buy an entire pack of JUST STRAWBERRY?!?!?! It’s the little things, you know? 🙂

Errmmm

So, your comment forced me into my office’s kitchen, where we have sour patch kids, starburst, twizzlers and nerds. I grabbed 2 of each and ate them ALL!!!!!!

Why Joy, WHY? ; )

Naomi Pandolfi

That is AMAZING! Just strawberry all day!

Great review!! I love seeing the actual product. It helps to know consistency. I would love to get this box as a one time purchase.

Ya, I chuckled out loud when I read:
“I am by nature a very skeptical New Yorker, so I spend a lot of time with my brow furrowed, and as a result, the 11 lines between my brows are somewhat prominent.”

Errmmm

yeah that didn’t head where I thought it was going. LOL – I thought it was going to be about being skeptical about a product, but that wasn’t it!

Naomi Pandolfi

Thanks Luna, you know what they say, it’s funny because it’s true lol!
