The Beem Box July 2020 Review

The Beem Box came with a single info card that has a quick overview of the box and product information on one side.

SHAYDE Beauty The Detox Mask, 60 mL - Retail Value $38.00

I've never heard of Shayde Beauty but I am loving the brand name. Their detoxifying charcoal mask is formulated with active charcoal, kaolin clay, and organic lecithin to remove impurities and toxins, reduce pore size, and add moisture deep into your skin to reveal a healthy glow. I love the smell of this mask. It has an herbal tea like scent that reminds me of a clean, natural spa experience. The product smoothed on my face luxuriously. The texture was light, almost fluffy, airy with a whipped like consistency and the feel of a very fine exfoliant. After rinsing, my skin felt smooth, clean, and soft. It was as if this mask reached deep into my clogged pores and extracted every last bit of that summertime sludge that causes unwanted blemishes. I definitely enjoyed this product and I am interested to see what else Shayde Beauty has to offer.

Absolute New York Spotlight Highlight, 15 mL - Retail Value $8.99

This Absolute New York Spotlight Highlight in Golden Bronze is an ultra-concentrated, multi-purpose liquid highlighter, safe for use on face, eyes, and body. You can mix with your primer and foundation for an all-over natural, radiant look, or simply apply the highlighter directly to the desired areas of your face and blend out with a brush, sponge, or your fingers. I did the latter and of course blended with my fingers because my makeup brushes were all the way across the room. I really liked the natural golden shine this highlighter left on my cheekbones. The product is very lightweight and smooth. Application was simple and sanitary with the squeeze dropper. I was able to put the desired amount of product onto my finger without touching the applicator or the actual product. It blended nicely into my skin. This color is more suited for my skin tone than highlighters I've received in other boxes. I applied a few drops to my chest and it gave my decolletage a sultry glowing glisten. All in all, I enjoyed this product and am excited for the potential multiple uses, wink-wink.

Girlatick Precise Marker Liner in Black Noir, 1.2 mL - Retail Value $20.00

The Girlatick Precise Marker Liner in Black Noir is something every girl needs! I've received this product in other boxes previously, and it never is a disappointment to see it again. This marker is perfect for creating a thin or thick cat-eye winged liner. The tip is narrow and soft for precise application. The formula is light and weightless, applying smoothly and lasting all day long without smudging. The product has a matte finish that dries down nicely and gives you that picture-perfect look. I find this eyeliner much easier to apply than other brands I've tried and it has never run down into my eyes on a hot summer day. I'm happy to have received this eyeliner again!

Moira Lucent Cream Shadow (2 count), 2.1 g each - Retail Value $14 ($7 each)

I received the Moira Lucent Cream Shadow in 04 Luna and 08 Sirius. These shadows are incredibly soft and blendable, with a gel-like formula that creates a rich, silky pigment. The shadows almost bounce in their pan; it is such a springy texture and they are incredibly shimmery and pigmented. I love the holographic finish. I also love the gold in 04 Luna and the rich berry color in 08 Sirius. These are perfect for a bold or smokey eye look and I can't wait for the world to open up again so I can give that a try. Who knows, if it takes too long, I might just do a bold eye just to sit on my couch.

Propa Beauty Luminous Satin Lipstick in Victress, 3.5 g -  Retail Value $12 (currently on sale for $8.40)

This Propa Beauty Luminous Satin Lipstick in Victress has a subtle deep rose petal tone that is the perfect complement to darker skin tones. The product applied super silky, smooth, and creamy without drying out my lips. Victress is one of those lipsticks that doesn't require a lip liner. You can just apply and go. It has such a rich and creamy texture that leaves your lips feeling hydrated. This is the kind of nude that women of color need. I'm excited that Propa Beauty has created nude shades that are inclusive of the large array of skin tones.

Verdict: This is my first time receiving The Beem Box and I enjoyed the products. My favorite would have to be the Detox Mask from Shayde Beauty. It just left my skin feeling so smooth and reinvigorated! I also enjoyed the Spotlight Highlight in Golden Bronze from Absolute New York. I love that it's multi-purpose and that it gives a natural dewy glow when applied. The Girlatick Precise Marker Liner in Black Noir is a great staple item to receive in a box. I love the thin tip that allows for precise application and the dark matte color. The Moira Lucent Cream Shadows in 04 Luna and 08 Sirius have such a unique texture and bright, bold pigment. You can make so many fun eye looks with these colors. The Propa Beauty Luminous Satin Lipstick in Victress is a great nude option for women of color. I'm happy to have a nude lipstick that is my nude and not just a generic nude. With a retail value of $92.99 on a $39.95 box + $5.00 shipping, you definitely get your money's worth, but for a bi-monthly box in the same price range as some of the seasonal boxes available, I feel like something was missing. Overall, I liked this box and I love that all the products are geared toward women with my skin tones, and I'm excited to see what's in the September box.

I just signed up for the box! Although the shipping took forever, I loved everything in it!
I got the same pink eyeshadow and a mint green one.

I am surprised it took this long for someone to create a beauty box for black women, I have received one too many ashy-colored palettes that don’t work well for my skin tone.😒

Mimosa

Hi Naomi,

Thanks for the fun and thorough review. The products look really good, particularly if you’ve got the skin tone to rock them. I’m pretty pale-skinned so I’m outside the target market but I still think I’d be able to use everything except the lipstick in some way, shape or form. Your review really described each product so well, which is super important for less-well-known brands.

While I can understand anyone wishing that this sub supported mainly WOC brands or BLM causes, I don’t think it should be the responsibility of every box aimed at women / men of colour to have to donate its proceeds or limit its product range when all other sub boxes don’t have to do the same. I do agree, though, that purely from a competitive strategy perspective, this box needs to offer a similar level of value as other beauty boxes in the same price range, and I think it might be falling a bit short on that front. As you said.

Thank you for the great review, and looking forward to seeing your next one of this sub!

LOVE those two eyeshadow colors – the swatches look SOOOO GOOD.

Jackie

Love the idea of this box, but the price of this feels really high for what you get. Maybe a palette being in here or a something else to round out the value. Tribe is a similar box and I feel like the value is much more evident.

I wish the brands were at least Black-owned or they donated a portion to Black-supporting business – something.

I agree Jackie, the price point is a bit high for what you get, IMO. However this is my first box so I’m excited to see what the next couple months look like 🙂

Ashley Agunbiade

It is actually black owned 🙂
But check out there other boxes. The one I got had an eyeshadow palette, Face mask, lipstick/lipgloss and a few other items (blush etc).
