Sweet Sparkle June 2020 Review

Terre Mere Eyeshadow Brush - Retail Value $17

My ever-growing brush hoard welcomed this flat eyeshadow brush with open arms. This brush is great for packing on color, powder, and cream alike, and it did a pretty good job blending the edges out as well. I hate to get pure white brush heads dirty because they never clean up to that same pristine, new appearance, but maybe that is just me.

J. Cat Invisible Matte Lip Makeup Remover, 15 mL - Retail Value $4.99

I very rarely use matte lip color, but for the sake of this product's true purpose, I packed on a bright red liquid lip. I applied an even layer of this oil-based product on my colorful lips and swiped it off with a tissue to a reveal clean, hydrated pout. I don't think this worked any differently than a normal oil-based makeup remover, although the mint flavor tastes more pleasant that my micellar water does!

Bronx Colors Vintage Glamour Pocket Set - Retail Value $11.99 (based on a previous review)

Oh boy. I could tell from the bulky packaging that I would not like this small compact. The two eyeshadow colors are essentials, that's true, but I have more portable palettes with far more options. I am also inclined to dislike the blusher because it is impossible to dip a face brush in it without hitting the eyeshadows. The colors swatched nicely, but yawn, I am bored! I couldn't find this set online to purchase, but I did find this from a previous Sweet Sparkle review; I used that to determine this product's cost.

J. Cat The Big Lip Pencil in Plum - Retail Value $3.99 (on sale for $2.99)

J. Cat is one of my favorite drugstore makeup brands. They have so many gems in their lineup, including this pencil. It is hydrating and the color is a pretty pinky-plum that would flatter any complexion. The pencil applied with a natural finish and felt comfortable on my lips without a lip balm.

Chella Eyebrow Pencil in Auburn - Retail Value $20

Chella's eyebrow pencil has most of the qualities I love in a brow pencil, including a very thin tip and a spoolie on the opposite end. I can't understand why a subscription would send out a warm auburn shade for a brow product; this will exclude a lot of subscribers (myself included). I have this same pencil in a brown shade, and I really like it to fill in my brows and create a fuller brow look.

Hikari Glitter Mask – Retail Value $13

AH! This mask is a repeat from a box last year. Spoiler alert: I did not get on with this one! Here is what I had to say about it the first time around:

Hikari is a brand I see in beauty subscription boxes all the time. I don’t remember ever making a connection with any of their products, and this mask is no different. Peel-off masks are fun in theory, but realistically, I like my skincare to be quick and easy. I started to apply an even layer and was totally thrown by the perfumy fragrance. I stopped at my forehead because even then I was overwhelmed. It dried slowly, but when I finally got to peel it off, I was able to get most of it off in one satisfying, glittery sheet. My skin felt soft after removing the mask, but it is definitely not worth the headache.

Swatches of the makeup (left to right): J. Cat lip pencil in Plum, Bronx Colors palette, Chella eyebrow pencil in Auburn

Here is the look I came up with using most of the products from this month’s box. I didn't apply the eyebrow shade since it didn't match my brows at all, but I am wearing the J. Cat lip color and the pocket set from Bronx Colors.

Verdict: June's Sweet Sparkle was not a good fit for me. The color products didn't wow me, and the eyebrow pencil wasn't a match, either. Sweet Sparkle has been sending a lot of repeats recently, so let's hope next month they pull from fresh inventory. This month’s retail value came to $69.97, over double the box cost.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Your first box will be the current month’s box. So if you sign up in the month of July, you will get the July box, etc.

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.
