KnitCrate Membership June 2020 Review

KnitCrate Membership is the flagship box from the KnitCrate brand. In my opinion, it’s the best box to start with if you’re looking to expand your knitting knowledge or expand your yarn stash! The yarn they send is from one of their in-house brands, and it’s always very high quality.

A note on shipping: KnitCrate is experiencing some minor shipping delays. The July crate is estimated to ship at the end of the month. For June, our crates arrived in a poly mailer, rather than a cardboard box like they usually do. KnitCrate said in an email regarding shipping:

We are shipping the contents of your crate inside of a soft mailer bag instead of the usual cardboard crate. This is allowing our team to build your packages faster to account for the lack of staff and it is facilitating zero contact delivery since these fit better into mailboxes.

KnitCrate Inspirations Booklet, June 2020 - Retail Value $40.00

Due to COVID-19, we did not receive a printed booklet as we typically do. Instead, we got this card that contains a message from the company as well as a code to download the booklet (you must have an active KnitCrate subscription to get access).

The pattern booklet included a download code so that you could add the PDF version to your Ravelry library. When I used the code it listed the booklet as having a value of $40, but at the time of our review, the booklet is not currently for sale as a separate item.

KnitCrate has "Color Vibe" options, where you get to choose which color family you would like to receive. Coordinating with those three color options are three colorway combinations available this month: Pigment (Energize Me), which is a bright burnt orange color; Haze (Chill Out), which is a dusty light purple; or Beaches (All Natural), which is a sandy neutral.

KnitCrate always sends a knitting pattern and a crochet pattern to go along with the yarn, which is always something I really appreciate about the box. The knitting pattern this month is for a large tote bag, and we have our very first Tunisian crochet project featured in the box this month too - a beautiful triangular shawl! The influencer for this month is Toni Lipsey of TL Yarn Crafts, a wonderful crochet designer who is the queen of Tunisian crochet. She was the featured maker in my January 2020 The Crafter's Box which is where I learned how to do Tunisian crochet! I was excited to see another pattern featuring this craft, but didn't feel like I needed two similar shawls in my handmade wardrobe.

The back of the booklet shows a sneak peek of the theme for July - it will be “Color Splash” and I can’t wait to see what bright colors will come from this palette!

The booklet also contains information for the Sock Membership Crate box. You can find out more information about this box by reading our previous reviews and visiting the KnitCrate website.

Now, onto the good stuff - the yarn!

Audine Wools Interlock in "Beaches" - Retail Value $48.00 ($24.00 per skein)

I received the All Natural colorway for this month, which I was so excited about! This pale neutral is one of my favorite colors I've received from KnitCrate - it has a subtle blush tone on top of the beige. The base is a new one for KnitCrate and contains 34% cotton, 35% linen, 19% lyocell (which is a rayon made from cellulose pulp), and 11% nylon. This combination gives the most summery blends I've ever seen!

The construction of this sport-weight yarn is a chainette, which means that the strand looks like a chain of stitches. This gives the yarn a super lightweight and airy effect, due to there being a lot of air trapped between the chains in the strand. I can't imagine a better yarn for a summer garment, so that's what I had to make with this yarn!

Each skein contains 351 yards in 100 grams.

KnitCrate Straight Pins Set

The extra this month is a set of rainbow-colored pins that can be used for sewing or for blocking your knit and crochet pieces. I love the circular holder for the pins - it makes it super easy to pull out one pin at a time while you're working. I also think the rainbow colors are super cute!

Since this yarn is everything my summertime knitted garment dreams are made of, I decided to use my skeins to make the Ankers Summer Shirt, which is a pattern I've wanted to make for a long time! This yarn is absolutely perfect for this pattern, and I'm so happy with how it's knitting up!

The chainette construction of the yarn combined with the linen and cotton content gives the fabric of my top such a wonderful lightweight drape. I'm loving how this is working up! I feel like this yarn was the perfect choice for this pattern, and I can't wait to have this off the needles so I can start wearing it.

In the closeup photo, you can see the nubbly texture the linen content gives the finished fabric. I love that it is slightly rustic and imperfect, but looks oh so modern and fresh.

Verdict: I thought this was such a great KnitCrate box! I loved getting to try out this new yarn base, and it was such a perfect blend of fibers for the summer. I am super excited about the summer top that I'm making with it. If you are a knitter or crocheter who is open to trying new types of yarn, this would be a great subscription box to check out! For $24.99, we received two skeins of yarn, a pattern booklet, and a set of pins for a total estimated retail value of $88.00. I think this is an amazing value for what you receive, since high-end, premium yarn is usually around $25-35 per skein in a local yarn store, and most patterns on Ravelry are $5-10 each.

A few other things that are good to know: If you follow KnitCrate on Instagram or join their Ravelry group, they reveal spoilers at the end of each month (usually around the 15th) before the subscription renews on the first. They then release all the details on the yarns and patterns on the 1st of the month. July's reveal post is here. If you are pickier about what fibers you like to use or want to avoid certain colors, these would be great to check out. Otherwise, you won’t know what the theme, yarn, or patterns will be before they renew your subscription for the month.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you'll likely receive the July box (while supplies last).

Value Breakdown: At $24.99, here’s approximately what you are paying for each item:

  • Pattern Booklet - $11.35
  • Interlock Yarn - $13.63 ($6.81 per skein)
