BoxyCharm July 2020 Review

Happy to see an included info card this month. My variation is #42.

Let's see what I received!

111Skin NAC Y2 Pollution Defence Booster, 20 mL - Retail Value $135.00

FYI: Some info from 111Skin:

This product is produced in both Europe and the Far East depending on scale. In both cases, all raw materials are sourced from our regular suppliers and remain at a consistent premium quality.

111Skin is one of those super pricy brands that I have really only seen in subscription boxes. I do know they also sell them at Saks though, along with a few other luxe department stores. I have always found the formulas to be good, but not really something I would align with the $$$ price tags. This formula has a super thick and gooey gel texture with loads of slip. It takes very, very little to coat your face! As long as you don't use too much (I did the first time) it actually absorbs really well. It leaves behind some moisture but didn't really change the feel of my skin. Inside this formula is some really good stuff, namely glycerine, rosemary leaf extract, moringa, and grape seed extract. There are tons of anti-oxidants inside that help protect against free radical damage. While this is all well and good, this bottle kind of feels like an extra step to a routine that might already have this sort of ability depending on your serums and cream choices.

HOURGLASS Arch Brow Micro Sculpting Pencil in 'Ash', 0.04 g - Retail Value $28.00

My brows are a hot mess and have been for years. The saying goes "brows are sisters, not twins" but most days mine don't look related. Needless to say, I use a lot of brow gels and pencils. My favorite brow (yes I have one too) is my left, which has an adorable little cowlick on the inner edge that I like to replicate on the more reserved right brow. This pencil is firm enough and shaped correctly to make adding those little extra flicks very easy. There is also a spoolie at the end of this pencil for brushing my brows up and shaping them before and after adding pencil. The 'Ash' color is described as a grey/brown with cool undertones, which looks really great on my face.

A pretty good match for my brows!

Ace Beauté Bronzed in Paradise Palette - Retail Value $30.00

Bronzers can be a challenge for me even in the height of summer because I am really, REALLY fair. The sun and I don't get along for long. I was a little disappointed to see a palette with FOUR bronzers inside my box. Sometimes if the shade is cool enough I can utilize bronzers as a little touch of sun on my cheeks or even for light contouring, but these are very warm. I can kind of make the lightest shade work, but it does look a little yellow on me. I am going to look on the bright side of things and imagine this is just a palette with 4 really great brown eyeshadows in extra-large pans.

Totally warm and sunny.

Sol de Janeiro Mini Brazilian Joia Strengthening + Smoothing Shampoo, 3 fl oz - Retail Value $12.00

Sol de Janeiro Mini Brazilian Joia Strengthening + Smoothing Conditioner, 3 fl oz - Retail Value $12.00

I am a late member of the Sol de Janeiro scent club. I used to think the smell of their iconic cream was way too sweet and reminded me of food. I ended up getting a few samples and now I really like it. These minis have that same amazing fragrance and I have to say that I LOVED using these! My whole shower and bathroom were filled with a cloud of warm sunny scent. As far as how these two formulas actually work, they are pretty good! The shampoo had loads of lather though it did take a little bit of work to get going. (We should all be massaging our scalps longer in the shower anyways. Life is crazy and everyone deserves to take their time!) It left my hair feeling squeaky clean without feeling overly dried. The conditioner was pretty thick and I didn't need a ton to coat my ends. The scent stuck around for a while which was nice! I can totally see myself splurging on the full-size bottles.

Hola Neon Liquid Lipstick in 'The Easy Sell', 6.5 mL - Retail Value $17.00

I really, really wanted to love this lipstick. The color is perfect: a terracotta rose on my lips. But the formula isn't for me. It is a liquid lippie that dried down to a matte finish, but I found it too dry. It actually flaked a little on me. This was improved greatly by adding a little balm on top, but I didn't enjoy this formula. If you like a thinner matte liquid lipstick you might have better luck than I did.

Verdict: My BoxyCharm box has an overall value of $234 which is insane for a $25 box, but I can't help but feel this assortment just wasn't for me this month. The only two items I really loved were the brow pencil and the shampoo+conditioner duo (which together do still total almost the entire cost of the box). The 111Skin booster is just fine, and the bronzer palette is super nice, but literally not something I can use regularly in the way it was meant to be used. The lipstick was the right color, but I found the formula uncomfortable. The value was totally here this month, I just wasn't feeling it. Fingers crossed that Premium is more of a win for me!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, this box is still available, but there are variations! These boxes do sell out, so if you love it, hurry.

Value Breakdown: At $25.00 for this box, here is approximately what you are paying per product:

  • 111Skin Booster $14.42
  • Hourglass Brow Pencil $2.99
  • Ace Beauté Bronzer Palette $3.21
  • Sol de Janeiro Shampoo + Conditioner Duo $2.56
  • Hola Neon Lipstick $1.82

Alternatively, the average cost of each of the 5 items is $5.00.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

All I know is that Boxy is turning into Ipsy. I the cheap plastic makeup bag, CBD cream another ugly eye shadow pallet. A lip balm that I will use. And something else I already gave away. I am done with boxy. The only good thing are their add on sales. They are much cheaper than Fabfitfun , for the exact same products! I am also done with Fabfitfun , who make their own products in China which are subpar.
I just tried Ipsy, duplicate items ! My add ons got caught in the glitch. So I will be canceling them also.

Box of style is not for everyone but it’s fast shipping and I don’t like everything but the quality is there. they also ship out on time.

Am I the only one that finds it funny there is not one listing for the shampoo/conditioner on the swap site? I know a lot of people probably want to keep them but I realllly think they didn’t send that many out and it was a ploy to get people to buy. I literally signed back up just for a chance at the set. And ended up with utter crap of a box that was not in any way based of my profile/quiz. I got the bronzer palette this is literally the darkest I have ever seen and my profile has me as the absolute lightest/pale option there is. And the “brush cleaner” which is a tin can with a hard sponge.

Received my box today. It’s variation 16.

Same Ace Beaute bronzer palette as above. Like Megan, it’s waaaay too dark for me.
The Creme Shop “Clean Canvas” color correcting cushion primer – yellow. Have no idea what this is so will def. try it out.
Clean Skin Vit. C brightening booster (my choice)
Hourglass glitter eyeshadow in foil (received ciate glitter eyeshadow in ipsy last month almost same color)
Lavish quick color switch dry brush cleaner

The dry brush cleaner is literally just a scouring sponge in a tin can. Don’t get me wrong, I like it and will definitely use it. I just think it’s a genius idea to put together $0.50 worth of easy to acquire items and charge $17 for it.

I got box #40 and as usual, I got 4 items I’ll use and 1 to give away.

Ciate Everyday Vacay setting spray
Clean Skin Vitamin Brightening Booster – Choice item
Touch In Sol pretty Filter Glassy Skin Balm
Lavish dry brush cleaner
Pur Cosmetics festival 2.0 eyeshadow palette – giveaway item

Joy-Not the Other One

I have the same question. It was supposed to be the 13th and they moved it to today (the 15th) and I’ve been checking all day. Now there is a banner that says “Check Social for add-on and choice time update) I do not have any social media so I was hoping someone on here could help? Thanks!

Chelsea

Go to boxycharm.com/choice and you will be able to pick then shop the add on’s. It worked for me. I went for the cleanser.

I’m too pale to use bronzers, too, but my daughter saw it and said, “Oh, I love brown eyeshadow!” so I just gave the pallet to her. Everybody wins.

I really liked my box again this month. I think this is 3 months in a row I’ve gotten lucky.

My box has:
111 Skin booster *my choice
Sol de Janeiro shampoo/conditioner (can’t wait to try)
Hourglass shattered eyeshadow in Vivid. (this was the olive green shade and it’s stunning.)
Duocce eyeliner (will go in the drawer to keep the other 500 or so company. Ha Ha)
Ace Beaute bronzer palette (I am now pretty stocked up on bronzers but happy to try)

I agree – it does seem like a shiftless thing to do – however I guess its a free market economy. I personally wouldn’t purchase these items because its definitely price gouging. I did not receive my June BoxLuxe until mid July and everything was dirty and boxes were crushed. The Tarte pallette was dirty, had been opened and had a couple of fingerprints on it. I sent Boxy an email. I wonder where the quality control is – especially during a pandemic. Obviously all Boxycharm cares about is getting your money. Not customer service or shipping quality, in tact items.. Luxe box was a total bust this quarter, full of junk items like CBD cream, poor quality lip pencils, essential oil. Mascara and too dark BB cream. I could have gotten more mileage ftom my $53.00 shopping at TJ Maxx. The pallette could have been nice (but unfortunately had been opened). Im really done with this company. I’m not going to support, what I consider to be deceptive and unsanitary business practices.

How do people here feel about people selling their products from Boxycharm on Facebook and other sites? I joined this Facebook group and I saw some people trying to sell products near full retail. They did give some discount, but I saw some trying to sell those 111skin, Elemis and other higher priced items for like $90. Others selling the Tarte palette from Luxe for $35 or $40, various lipsticks for like $5-$10 off full retail that Boxy lists, etc.

I don’t know how I feel about that. It seems kind of ridiculous to me someone would try to sell something for so much money when everyone knows what they paid for the box. Especially considering that you can sometimes find those items on sale – for cheaper – at Sephora or Ulta or other places. Plus, you’re putting a lot of trust in that person that they never opened it – and some items you would never know if they did or not since Boxy rarely includes packaged/sealed items in the boxes. I think the only item I got with some kind of sealed packaging was the Glow Recipe avocado mask that came with a sticker to seal the box. Everything else, who knows if someone opened it or not. I don’t know. It would be one thing if they were trying to sell stuff for a DEEP discount for $10, $15, $20, etc. but for near retail? Just seems off to me. Anyone else feel like that?

Kate of Spades

Oh, I can imagine buying palette from someone during global pandemic! From other side it’s a free market. I bought Too F diamond highlighter once from ebay for 14$ and it seemed to be perfectly new. With unpeeled stickers everywhere etc. But if it was anywhere close to the retail price I’d not bother. I’d just sign up for the damn box, at least it is free shipping.

Reply ButtonReply

Beth

Yeah. I have definitely bought some stuff off eBay in the past. Now with Covid things are a bit different. I was floored when I saw someone attempting to sell the Tarte palette for $40, when it was on sale at Sephora for half off and was cheaper than the person was trying to sell it for. And again, knowing they got it in the Luxe box and knowing how much they paid for the whole box, it just doesn’t sit well with me. I guess people can spend their money however they want to spend it, and if they’re okay paying so much for something that they know the person paid way less for it, then all the power to them. I’d rather look elsewhere. I think I’d be much more likely to buy, or be tempted to buy- depending on the item, if they sold it for $10 or something, or at least over 50% off the retail price – since we all know they got an entire box of stuff for $25-$50. Especially since most of the stuff comes without packaging.

Maybe if it was an item that would be really hard to get otherwise, maybe I’d consider it, but that namely only seems to be the case with indie or unknown brands. With other brands, they’re easy to find in Sephora, Ulta, or even drug stores, and you can sometimes find them on sale. For the more expensive brands, whether easy or hard to find, it’s nice to try it from the box but I wouldn’t go and buy it unless it was life changing and made a huge difference.

Sara

Megan, I wanted to agree/disagree with you about 111skin. It is a very luxe brand, carried by high-end beauty stores like SpaceNK, Net-a-Porter and Neimans. It has been around for a while, British. So I wouldn’t classify it at all as “only seen in subscription boxes”, which to me calls to mind the brands which are made by sub boxes or contracted out to them

Before about 18 months ago, however, you could only sometimes get the brand in a Net-A-Porter box or the like. More recently, they have begun mass-producing some product for inclusion in sub boxes. It is often made in China when in the sub boxes, and in at least one case, the product I got was not of usable quality.

I kind of feel, if you want to use this brand, you are better off getting it from the expensive providers than from a sub box, whether through a GWP or a box such as a NaP one. The products I have gotten in this manner are really wonderful quality.

This would be the perfect box for me. I love Sol de Janeiro products. I just ordered more of their creams in all 3 scents at Sephora and I’ve been thinking about buying their perfume. Have any of you tried it? I did choose the 111 Skin so I will keep my fingers crossed.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Hi Page, I *love* the scent as well and bought the body spray/perfume because I was obsessed! Unfortunately it didn’t linger for as long as I had hoped and I probably won’t be purchasing it again. Maybe layering the body spray/perfume on top of the lotion would make it more long-lasting, but the spray scent just wasn’t as intense as the lotions. I’m 100% going to try the shampoo/conditioner – I want my bathroom to be filled with the scent!

Thank you so much for responding. You saved me from ordering it. I went with the Versace yellow diamond instead which doesn’t smell so great on me. I also signed up for Scentbird just to try other fragrances.

Krystal

The card says variation 3 but says 42 maybe typo 🤷‍♀️? I would love this variation but the account I chose the Choice item I got that lippie on that same account last month! I already have my shipping labels created by now! But not this month! He said it would be better this month but so much better next month!! Hope it gets better! If not I’m going to sub to a higher box with much higher end products like mmmitchel and Jeffrey Star even though I do not want any of Jeffree’s products! That’s another story! So much more products! Yes it’s a little higher but a lot cheaper than I’m paying for all the accounts that I have and doesn’t have a variation! That one and if I can get the Trendmood Box every time it comes out is sooo much better if it doesn’t improve! I absolutely love Boxycharm! But they haven’t answered my email in 2 months and my daughters since February but answers someone else email within 6 minutes of emailing them! We just get a automated email saying if we still need help reply

What boxes have j* in them?? I’ve never heard of this

Reply ButtonReply

Carrie H

Yes, that’s what I was wondering. How can you tell variation? It looks like it would be 3 on the card.

Reply ButtonReply

Jean

I have gotten the exact same box as you more than once Megan, but I chose the C serum so I doubt that will be the case this time. I’m still on the fence with the SDJ stuff – the scent is a little too powerful for me. I know some women are dying to get the shampoo/conditioner in their boxes though. Good luck ladies!

Wait, did anyone else catch that line above: “ The Products: 5-6 beauty items that include nail care, skincare, makeup, haircare, fragrance, and more. (At least 4 of those items will be full-sized).”???

So now it’s 5-6 products, with at least 4 of them being full-size? But yet the price of the box hasn’t gone down? What happened to 5 full-size products? If they did change the description, at least they’re being honest now about including mini and sample sizes now and not full size items, because that’s what I’ve been getting since March. I got those 2 sample Sol de Janeiro creams as an item in my box, which I’ve gotten for free multiple times at Sephora. And was it in May premium when they gave us that mini Milk item and that tiny lip balm? Got another mini lip oil from them in June as my choice item because I didn’t like any of the other choice items – which were also mostly repeats, including the Milk lippie. 🙄

Reply ButtonReply

Steph H.

I’ve been with Boxycharm for over a year and its always been 4-5 full size items in their description. I started in April of last year.

Reply ButtonReply

Elizabeth

The Boxycharm FAQ’s also says base box has 5 FULL SIZE products. Nowhere does it mention receiving anything less than full size or anything less than 5 items. And also doesn’t mention anywhere on their site that base box gets 5-6 items, or 4-6 items.

Elizabeth

That is not what it says on the Boxycharm website. Right on the main page it says: “5 full-size beauty products delivered every month.” near the top of the page and “Join BoxyCharm Receive 5 full-size, brand-name beauty products.” near the bottom. And if you go to the Compare Boxes page it also lists base box as 5 items. No mention of receiving mini/travel/sample sizes anywhere on the site, which is what they’ve been doing lately.

The Zoeva bronzer palette is so beautiful, I just know it wouldn’t work for me, personally.

Wow, you got an incredible box. Compared to premium this month, this is miles away better. I would reactivate my sub if i was guarranteed this box, but we all know that wont happen. Had to stay subbed for this terrible month so I could use my credit for the add ons(they didn’t sent me the toofaced) and so I could get TWO choices for August. Ugh. sucks I had to stay on but after august im done!

Reply ButtonReply

Elizabeth

Yup, same. Of course if I re-subscribed today, I’d get a bunch of repeats and leftovers, and other stuff I didn’t want – like KVD. If this box is what I’d get, yeah I’d totally resub, this is probably the best possible variation you could get. The other variations I’d be happy with is the blush quad instead of the bronzer of the Clean Skin choice item over 111 skin. The nudestix would be interesting, but the owners are problematic so I wouldn’t really want to get them either. Plus knowing my luck they’re probably send me a deep red or dark brown shade I can’t use. They never send me pretty nude or pink shades.

But of course this time I’d just do it one box at a time instead of subbing for 3 months, which is what I did last time. Luckily for me my sub ended with June Luxe box, so I was able to cancel that. And I was so incredibly turned off by the July premium, so cancelled that too. There is absolutely nothing premium about their premium box anymore. Hasn’t been premium for a long time. And I’m sick of getting ridiculously overpriced stuff they claim is worth $100, just to increase the value of the box. And then there’s the mini, sample and travel sizes. The Sol De Janeiro shampoo/conditioner set are the travel sizes, but at least it’s a good KNOWN brand and the other items in the box make it worth it. I made sure to use up all my charms (like $92 worth) before unsubscribing, even though there was nothing good in the Charm Room. Ended up using my charms for 2 brow gels, 2 cream eyeshadows and a lip liner. None of those items were worth what they priced them at, but I got them just to use up my charms.

I hope I get the shampoo and conditioner! It is one of my favorites. I love you using with the body wash and cream after. I smell amazing!

Bonnie

This box would have been great for me. The bronzer palette would have worked well for me, and I have tried the Hola Neon liquid lipsticks from another sub and really liked them.

But…this was the first month since I canceled Boxy (and all my subs). Husband lost his job last week so these boxes were the first cuts to the budget. Major FOMO…even thought it’s not like I don’t have enough makeup and skin care to last me decades.

But the box looks great…enjoy!
