Bespoke Post "Hawker" Review
It's so exciting to see what boxes Bespoke Post has to offer each month! When I was younger my family lived in Bangkok for three years, so when I saw this Thai themed box with an awesome looking knife and a curry kit, I was in! This card provides a recipe for some steamed rice to go along with our dish. I didn't use this recipe since I prefer to stick to what I know - plain jasmine rice in the rice cooker (well, Instant Pot now that I've upgraded a bit!).
Thai Chef's Moon Knife by Verve Culture - Retail Value $70.00
The main item in this box is this incredibly intense-looking knife. This is a traditional Thai moon knife and it is forged from lightweight carbon steel with a Thai Pradu wooden handle. It is handmade by artisans in a small village in Thailand and it can even cut through bone. The curved shape means you can use a rocking motion to cut and while I'm still getting used to it, I was impressed with the way it sliced! It retails for $70 on the Verve Culture site, but this didn't come with the nice wooden case like that one does, so I assume the value of this is slightly less because of that.
The blade is super thin and incredibly sharp. I haven't had a chance to use it on vegetables yet, but after seeing the way it was able to slice through raw chicken, I think it's going to work nicely! I'm excited to learn the rocking technique to really get some culinary skills down.
Thai for Two Red Curry Kit by Verve Culture - Retail Value $12.00
I frequently make curry for my husband and me since it's such a quick and simple dinner so we were both excited to try out this curry kit and see how it compared. This kit comes with spices, herbs, and coconut milk. You just have to provide the protein, veggies, and rice if that's how you'd like to serve it. I appreciated how it was packaged up so nicely and how each thing was labeled.
The little tag opened up to the cooking instructions while the nutritional information was on the back. This says it takes 7 minutes, but it definitely took me just a bit longer, although part of that might be because I cut my chicken a bit thicker than usual since I was quite intimidated by that knife this first time around!
The first step was to heat some olive oil in the pan and then fry the red curry paste in it. Then I added the coconut milk and combined it before adding a 1/4 cup of water and letting it boil.
Meanwhile, I cut up my protein and you can see here what thin slices I was able to achieve from this chicken breast. This was the second breast, once I was a bit more comfortable with the knife!
Next, I added the Red Curry Seasoning which was simply a white powder, and I mixed it well before adding my chicken.
We didn't have any veggies on hand that I thought would go well with this so instead, I just upped the protein a bit. Once the chicken was cooked I stirred in the dried herbs and it was ready to serve.
I served it over a bed of jasmine rice prepared in my Instant Pot. The second photo is the curry mixed with the rice and the third is what was leftover in the pan after serving the two bowls in the first picture. My husband and I both thought it was pretty good with a nice kick to it, although I think both of us actually prefer the usual curry that I prepare. This was a bit more watery in consistency by comparison and didn't have a very bold flavor profile. We both enjoyed it and would definitely try it again, but my usual curry is slightly more simple to prepare (one can of curry, one can of coconut milk) and it's less expensive. I am curious to see how this version fares with some veggies added to it though! I feel like the added textures might be nice with it. We both did appreciate the dried herbs that came with it!
Verdict: I was excited to try this box from Bespoke Post this month and it was nice to be able to prepare a simple meal while also adding a new kitchen utensil to our collection. That knife is no joke! It is a quality piece of cutlery and will work well for all of my future chopping needs since the blade is so sharp. As for the retail value of this box, I am estimating it to be about $82 (minus whatever that wooden case would be worth) which is pretty great for a $48.95 ($45 + $3.95 shipping) box! I love the selection from this sub, especially since the items are usually great quality and pretty unique!
