Our May/June 2020 Review

NewBeauty TestTube is one of my favorite subs because they send really unique and new items, many of which I have never even heard of! This booklet is a great reference for each item we received this month. It is full of additional info, interesting facts, and editor commentary.

Now, on to the items!

Dr. Brandt pores no more Luminizer Primer, 1 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $38.00

This product is a familiar one, and one I like! It feels really nice on my face and is a great first step to a dewier look since there it the tiniest amount of shimmer from crushed pearl powder. I also like this on my face alone on days I am not wearing makeup because it gives a smoother blurred finish and a good bit of hydration. The scent also reminds me of some of the Sisley products I love. If I could change one thing it would be to add some sunscreen (and save me a step!) but I still really like this primer, even without SPF.

Le Mieux Hyaluronic Serum, 1 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $60.00

This is actually one of the brands I had heard of while in esthetician school (classes have been on pause for months now!) and instructors seem to really like the brand. It looks like you might actually need a pro account to order on their site, but I did manage to track it down via Art of Skincare for the same price. Most of you know that I love hyaluronic acid. This molecule holds 1000 times its own weight in hydration, but is small, meaning that payload of moisture is easily absorbed into your skin. This serum has a mix of molecular sizes for optimum absorption. You really need to use only a few drops of this. It feels kind of slimy at first but then starts to absorb, leaving behind skin with no film. This is a really, REALLY great hydrator for skin with acne concerns. In addition, the formula has panthenol, green tea extract, vitamin E, and other skin saviors.

RUSK PUREMIX Native Fig Replenishing 3-in-1 Leave-In, 6 fl oz - Retail Value $18.00

I love a good leave-in conditioner, especially since I let my hair air dry and often sleep on it damp, which can be terrible for texture and tangles. I didn't know if I would really like this one since I was worried it might have a very fruity scent. I am happy that the scent is actually so nice! It is figgy, but in a sophisticated and perfumy sort of way. This stuff is also on the thicker side. Most leave-ins I have tried are more of a liquid texture while this one feels like a cream or balm, even though it does dispense with a spray. For this reason, I like to spray a little in my palms, rub them together, then finger comb it through my damp hair. It absolutely ups the shine and softness factor on my strands. While I don't dye my hair right now, it has some nice color-protecting ingredients like quinoa, so if you do, this is great!

Terra & Co. Brilliant Black Toothpaste, 4 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $25.00

I have pretty-on-the-outside teeth that look nice but have all sorts of problems. For that reason, I do prefer toothpaste and mouthwashes with fluoride since my enamel is super thin. I get that this isn't for everyone, but it works for my finicky teeth!

If you are on the hunt for a fluoride-free, whitening, and organic option though, this is going to be pretty exciting for you. In addition to charcoal, this formula has coconut oil, tea tree oil, and peppermint oil. It is not as minty as your normal storebought brands, but it is certainly more natural. When I tried it out I did notice it left my mouth a little black, but a quick rinse with water fixed that!

ORLY Breathable Treatment + Color in 'Pep in Your Step', 18 ml - Full Size! Retail Value $9.99

FYI: Shades may vary.

I was kind of hoping to get the light blue shade from the spoilers, but how can I be disappointed with such a fun pink shade instead? ORLY is one of the polish brands that seems to last longer on my thin nails, so I buy it quite often! This 'Breathable' line is supposed to be even longer lasting on my nails, and I did remain chip-free for 5 days, which for me is a really, really long time. Usually, I am noticing chips by day 2 or 3 with most formulas. This shade was a 2 coater for me and I was impressed that it dried faster than most of my others and retained a nice shine that let me skip a topcoat.

Two coats here! It turned out brighter than the bottle would suggest, but it's summer baby, and I am here for it!

ScarAway 100% Silicone Scar Gel, 20 g (3-month supply) – Full Size! Retail Value $24.99 (found here for $24.32)

I am super blessed to have skin that doesn't tend to scar, even though I am a walking disaster when it comes to cuts and scrapes. Will is less lucky and scars really easily! He also has a really physical job and is always coming home with new cuts and abrasions. He recently cut his leg at work and has a pretty gnarly and somewhat fresh scar right now. I convinced him to try this out and he agreed mainly because "it isn't smelly or glittery" which is truly the majority of the things I bring home, so who could blame him? The rollerball makes application easy, though it seems to clog every so often, I found squeezing the tube helped with this. Basically, the 100% silicone formula comes out in a very thin coating. While the instructions recommend letting it dry, I found that it never completely dried, which was still fine. As to scar prevention? Only time will tell.

NeoCell Collagen Protein Peptides, 15.1 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $39.95

Dang, this was a massive tub of powder! I was really surprised that such a big size was included. I am really bad about vitamins and supplements in general but I have friends who swear by collagen for their hair and nails. My hair probably doesn't need help, but my nails sure do! Collagen has been shown to also help with fine lines and wrinkles, and to help joint health. Collagen powder can be icky, but depending on what you mix it with it can also be flavorful or at least not awful. This formula is pomegranate acai flavored so I tried it just with water AND with Trader Joe's Watermelon Cucumber cooler. It was actually kind of tasty either way! The flavor felt much more like some sort of energy drink powder than a collagen powder. You can also add it to smoothies, which will likely be my choice tomorrow.

Naisture 3-Step Skin Care Kit : Exfoliating, 2 masks - Retail Value $4.00 each / $8.00

Naisture 3-Step Skin Care Kit : Recharging, 2 masks - Retail Value $4.00 each / $8.00

Finally, our last item is a set of 4 masks, each with three steps! The first is an exfoliating kit with a cleanser, AHA peeling pad, and a plumping sleeping mask. The second is a recharging kit with a cleanser, sheet mask, and moisturizer. The first I tried was the recharging set, after a day in the sun sketching. The cleanser was a heavier, thick formula that looked like crushed pearls. It felt really nice on my skin and left it makeup and sunscreen free. I then tried the sheet mask which was coated in a clear serum that was cooling and calming. The final step for that pouch was a lightweight moisturizer that sealed in hydration and left me feeling quite refreshed.

The second pouch had the same cleanser as the first step, but the second step was an AHA exfoliating pad. There are actually two of these inside, which was nice! I simply rubbed them all over my face and then let them dry. The final step was a gel sleeping mask, which could have been heavier IMO, but I like to sleep in the thick stuff! It has cica inside though, which is one of my fave redness reducers, so I can't complain.

I really liked these little kits! They would actually be perfect for weekend trips, though I sadly have nothing like that scheduled anytime soon.

Verdict: This NewBeauty TestTube was one of my favorites in recent memory. Aside from the toothpaste, everything in here will certainly be used with enthusiasm! Even Will is slightly enthusiastic about the scar gel. (Slight enthusiasm is quite a lot on the Will scale.) My favorite items were the nail polish, serum, and primer, though I also love the leave-in conditioner! I am also excited to see if I notice any real difference with using the collagen powder regularly. The value here was also nice, coming in around $231.93 which is fab for less than $40 including shipping. Hopefully, the upcoming NBTT selections will be this good!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

It’s a miracle, but I found a code that gives you $10 off, “NBNEWS” for anyone looking to sign up!

Thanks for sharing the code! 😁🙌

Wow Del, thank you so very much for the code. I’ve been looking at this subscription for some time now, and it is a bit more expensive than some of the others. I really wanted this one, though. My son just received a nasty burn, and although it’s healing up now, I wanted to try the scar cream afterward it’s better. Thanks again!

You’re welcome, this box never offers discounts so I was thrilled when I found one, I just had to share! I hope the scar Cream works for your son:)

I love the Will factor haha, he’s such a great addition to your reviews and you may tell him I said so, if he won’t get a big head 😂

I love this month’s box. I discovered collagen peptide thanks to Newbeauty last year. I can’t really say that it did anything for my hair and nails (which I need) but I kept taking it because I’m in my late 40s and want stay as healthy as possible. I was running out of the Vital Proteins brand (bought from Costco) and this Neocell tube arrived just in time. I started taking it with my morning coffee like I did with the other brand and it was just awful, the taste doesn’t blend with coffee at all. So the next day I took it with plain water (room temperature) and it dissolved well and I drank on empty stomach as recommended. And then after only 3 or 4 days, the pain I have had in my thumb arthritis was lessened and lessened day after day. OMG! I started having thumb arthritis due to my early menopause 2 or 3 years ago. It went and go and used to last only 2 or 3 weeks before but this time, it’s been going on for over 6 months and it was getting really bad so I was soooo happy when this Neocell collagen helped with my joint pain. I went and ordered 2 more boxes because the price pays for the collagen alone and the rest is freebies!
Thank you NEWBEAUTY!

Ooooh! I am very happy to hear this. I am 33, but I have some tenderness in a certain knee that is joint-related. This is more reason to keep trying. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I hope this will help your knee as well.
Thank you for all the help you have provided to us all throughout your awesome reviews. 🙂

This was my 3rd test tube. I got the blue color nail polish and it’s on my toes right now. I didn’t like the taste of the charcoal toothpaste. My teeth didn’t feel clean and I’m too lazy to clean my sink after every brushing. I love the conditioning spray, it calms frizzies and makes my hair behave
I’ll be purchasing it again.

Calio,

We’re glad you love the RUSK PUREMIX NATIVE FIG REPLENISHING 3-IN-1 LEAVE-IN. The ingredients in this treatment were picked with nothing but your hair’s ultimate health in mind 🙂

I used to have 2 TestTube subscriptions & the last few were lame so I emailed as soon as spoilers came out for March to cancel one and pause the other. Guess what? I got TWO of those lame March tubes & both accounts got cancelled for May. I didn’t realize till this review that I haven’t got my tube yet & it’s already June. So I signed back up for the collagen (it did help my brittle nails a lot last year!) and scar gel (my friend’s son burned his arm bad last week deep frying fish).
Once I tried charcoal toothpaste in a subscription a few years ago that’s the kind I’ve been buying (rinsing teeth from black residue is no big deal but cleaning sink right away is a must if you don’t want to freak out house guests. Lol) . Target had very unique limited edition charcoal toorhpastes last Christmas made by “Hello” so I stocked up on Hempy Holidays (with hemp) & Berry Merry (with goji berry) during 30%off sale that MSA notified us about. Thanks to MSA posts & comments I no longer buy beauty or personal care products without a “deal” I’m a pale redhead & “neutral” shades (which is what I get 99.9% in all my subscriptions regardless how much I stress RED in my profile) make me look dead so all my girlfriends & their daughters quit buying nude lipsticks, black eyeliner & mascara as they are guaranteed to receive several from me:) I can pretty much guarantee to get pale blue nail polish in this Tube! Add light brown Haus gloss (why not an obscene red pencil?) & beige eyeshadow from June’s Ipsy for complete “corpse” look!

Did you actually get that power to dissolve in a liquid? I haven’t yet. Plus, my tub came open and went everywhere! Testtube stated that they would send me a new one. I have not received it, it has been over a month.

TestTube

Hi Iggy,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We’re sorry to hear that you have yet to receive your replacement. Please don’t hesitate to reach out again!

I used a blender bottle! My husband has like 4 million of them and I steal them constantly. This made mixing a breeze!

Jessica

I’ve had good luck dissolving the collagen in a few ounces of hot water. Then I add ice because I can’t imagine drinking hot collagen water 😂

I tried the scar cream and it works! Right before getting the testtube, I burned myself on the oven (I have huge grill marks from the top rack ugh). I was actually debating getting scar cream and bought a pack of a different scar cream. Turns out the scar away from test tube came first and I been using and have noticed a difference

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Ironically, I did burn the underside of my arm in the oven last night. I don’t really scar from burns, but it can’t hurt. I am thinking it will really benefit Will though. His legs always look like a battleground.

Reply ButtonReply

am2cents

Ugh sorry to hear. I had gotten a few burns from oil splatters and once the scab falls off, my skin looked okay. But, I am the same as Will, I scar easily too. Hopefully, it works for you guys!

For example, NeoCell bovine collagen comes from beef hide. While NeoCell marine collagen comes from fish (carp) and NeoCell Collagen 2 comes from chicken sternum.

Ew. I’m still using it but it’s mind over matter.

I’m currently using the toothpaste (I think this is my 3rd tube), and it tastes like minty dirt, lol. It doesn’t turn my teeth black as much as other similar toothpastes, and it’s a little hard to get out of the tube, but overall I like it. I also like that they included a full size tube, as I think the other tubes I’ve used have been samples sizes.

I received the same color nail polish, and I wore it last week, and I agree with everything you said about it Megan. 🙂 It has beautiful coverage that, for me, I could have gotten away with only one coat, but I still applied two coats like I always do. It was super shiny, so no top coat needed, but I still applied one thinking it would seal it and prevent chipping. Typically nail polishes start out shiny but the shine usually fades on me toward the end of the week, but this one held its own quite well. I even got a compliment on my nails on day 7, and the person couldn’t believe I had been wearing it for a week! I only experienced slight fading by the end of the week on the tips of the nails that ALWAYS chip, so that was nice. It was definitely a perfect cheery color to complement the sunny weather I’ve been having where I live.

I always love getting supplements in boxes, so I was happy to see the large tub included. I don’t take them consistently though (only when I’m at work), so I have no idea if they’re doing anything, but regardless I figure it can’t hurt to try them. I thought it was interesting how the booklet said the powder could be mixed with coffee. Being acai flavored, I would think that would be quite an interesting combo. I usually stick with plain water with these powders. The flavored powders actually make me drink more water throughout the day because it makes me feel like I’m drinking a diluted juice throughout the day. 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Glad you also loved the polish Luna! I have it on both my nails and toes right now. Also agree with you on supplements. I’m terrible at taking them. The flavor helps and is yummy. No clue if they help significantly long term, but they don’t hurt, so why not!

Ami

Collagen powders gross me out. They’re a weird, and very useless fad that i wish would just go away. I’ve received onein my testtubes before, collagen with bovine as the ingredient. Its pretty much cow dust. You absolutely cannot eat collagen and expect wrinkle free skin. Good skin comes with good skin genes or a decent topical skin regimen.

I tried to post a response here yesterday but posted a link to an article and I think that led to it getting filtered out. A systematic review (which pretty much compiles the data from several existing high quality studies) found the following: “Preliminary results are promising for the short and long-term use of oral collagen supplements for wound healing and skin aging. Oral collagen supplements also increase skin elasticity, hydration, and dermal collagen density. Collagen supplementation is generally safe with no reported adverse events.” Therefore, I would call this more than just a useless fad, and something that some people would likely want to consider as a meaningful part of an anti-aging routine.

The article I’m referencing is “Oral Collagen Supplementation: A Systematic Review of Dermatological Applications” published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in 2019.

You know I am also about the good skincare side of things! I don’t think it is all fad though. I know too many people who see benefits. Hopefully, I am one of them, long term!
