BoxyCharm Premium June 2020 Review

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and often listing upcoming sales and promotions. It looks like my assortment this month is box #32.

Now, on to the items!

Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Sleeping Mask, 2.3 fl oz - Retail Value $49.00

I THOUGHT I had tried this product before, but the formula of mine was slightly different. I swore Glow Recipe used to make an avocado sleep mask without the retinol. Was I losing my mind? In typical fashion, I went on an internet deep dive. I did manage to find this older review of the original mask formula that included a full ingredient list and I did notice some major differences that would account for the texture difference and prove I wasn't imagining some sort of alternative sleep mask that never existed.

I liked this product, but I preferred the original formula much more. This is more of a thick bouncy texture while the original was a heavier cream. The original felt more hydrating and more, well, "avocado-y." It also had the first ingredient as "Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Fruit Extract" while the first ingredient in this newer formula is water, and that avocado extract doesn't show up on the ingredient list until 8 other ingredients have been listed. This isn't all bad! I still loved this sleep mask. It shares enough of the DNA of the original, and as someone who generally adores Glow Recipe products, I am thrilled to see this cute little pot in my BoxyCharm. I am a sleep mask enthusiast and this is a really great weight for summer because it starts absorbing as soon as you apply it, and by morning it is totally gone, leaving behind soft skin and a nice even texture on my face. Since this has encapsulated retinol, this sort of texture improvement should continue to improve more and more the longer I use it.

Too Faced Cocoa Contour Palette - Retail Value $44.00

The esthetician student in me loved this palette. A huge part of our coursework now that we are back in class is makeup application (I am still not great!!) and a palette with 6 shades is awesome when you are building a kit that can work for different skin tones. As for personal use? I can use only some of these shades which makes it less versatile as something taking up valuable makeup bag or vanity space. I am fine with keeping it for my kit though, but this might make it less appealing of an addition for a lot of Charmers. The powders have that familiar sweet Too Faced scent and are pretty soft when applied with a brush, meaning you might have to dip in a few times to get the pigment you want, or apply with a damp sponge and blend/buff well. They are also all matte, which is kind of nice since I have so many shimmering highlighters in my arsenal.

Top to bottom: Light Highlight, Medium Highlight, Deep Highlight

Top to bottom: Light Contour, Medium Contour, Deep Contour

Milk Makeup Glow Oil Lip + Cheek in 'Halo', 5.1 g - Retail Value $15.00

Milk Makeup fangirl here, and I really love their multi-sticks! I received the 'Astro' shade last month, but I honestly want them all so I am totally more than fine seeing this again in a new shade. This pink is so bright and shimmery! I love it both on my cheeks and lips, though it does have a lot of shine, so beware if shiny cheeks aren't your thing. This does die down a bit with some blending/blotting. Much like the 'Astro' shade, it seemed to feel like a blush + highlighter sort of combo since the shimmer was really noticeable. I have been using formulas like this on a bare face but if you want to try it over makeup, I recommend tapping it onto your face with your fingertips to not disturb your foundation. I am loving the effortlessness of these sticks and see myself using them often.

Love this pink.

Grace & Stella Anti-Wrinkle + Energizing Face Masks, 6 pieces - Retail Value $25.00

I did not like these masks. At all. They come in this massive plastic sheet that dripped all over my floor and the eye and mouth holes are way too small. The gel material itself is also so heavy that it slides and stretches down your face (my top lip was peeking out of the nose hole) and unless you plan on reclining you have to babysit it constantly to keep it on your face. I also found the serum to feel a little filmy on my skin.

Billion Dollar Brushes Sculpting Duo Brush - Retail Value $35.00

This is a nicer brush, though I think $35 is a bit steep for the retail cost. I like the flat top starkness of the larger end, especially for contour cream placement. The smaller tip is nice for precision work with highlighter or even eyeshadow. The bristles are infused with anti-microbial charcoal.

Skin&Co Sardinian Spirit Shower Gel, 7.7 fl oz - Retail Value $22.00

I am going to be a bit of a downer here but I absolutely can't handle lemongrass. I know most people love it, but it reminds me of citronella candles. This gel is a literal explosion of lemongrass. I did take it into the shower to test out the formula itself, but wow this is SO lemongrassy. The gel itself is fine and has a luxe feeling texture. I will even say it made my skin feel really soft and clean after rinsing. But now I smell like lemongrass.

Verdict: My BoxyCharm Premium had a value of $190 this month, which is great for a $35 box. There was enough in here to make me feel like it was more than worth it, but there were also some misses. The winners? The avocado sleep mask and Milk stick. I also am excited to try out the palette in my school kit. The brush was fine and decent enough quality. The misses? The lemongrass scented gel and the masks. All in all, though, I loved that 3 brands I really liked were included and that the variety inside felt well rounded!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Good to know not everyone got a moldy Too Faced Palette. I contacted CS with pictures of it with the label. They sent me an email four days later saying they needed pictures. -_- Good news is they are sending a new one. Hope I don’t find white fuss on it! Fingers crossed.

I’ve noticed SEVERAL items from Boxycharm that seem off, whether the packaging is damaged (but everything else is fine), funky looking or missing parts. More than once an eyeshadow palette looked used or just not brand new exactly. The Sardinian shower gel I got this month had a defective cap. It’s happened too often for it not to be the rule rather than the exception. I’ve never had those issue with other boxes except where something was clearly damaged in transit.

My Sardinian shower gel had no label! I have used though, and it smells wonderful.

Absolutely adore the last line…
‘But now I smell like lemongrass.’

Omg! That had me choking on my coffee! 😂

Crazy, I still haven’t even received my box. It says maybe the 30th. Lol same day I’ll be charged for next months box. I’ve been getting my box even through covid before the 12th. They’re lacking. Even next months spoilers look like trash

First,
Boxycharm needs to stop sending us private labeled garbage like those facemasks. The Sleuths over at reddit have uncovered that those Grace & Stella masks are private labeled/imported to be rebranded. I got them in my box as well and have not heard anything positive about them. UGH.

Secondly, they were supposed to send me the Too Faced Contour palette and they instead sent me a Tarte palette that arrived damaged. I reached out to customer service and they refuse to send me a replacement of the Tarte, claiming they have no stock. Well, that’s a load of crap because yesterday, Boxycharms instagram posted sneak peaks for their add on sale for next month and low and behold, the Tarte palette will be featured. Boxycharm has some of the worst CS in the industry. First, it takes them days to reply to you, if they do, and secondly, they never make things right in your favor. It’s whatever works for them like giving you lousy charms for a charm store that never has anything worthwhile in it. I will be cancelling for August. I’m tired of their BS.

Jennie, I Really do feel your pain I’ve been having nothing but issues this year with them.
I know they’re one of the best subscription boxes out there for your buck but you would think they would have good customer service skills and know how to take care of their customers better 🙄

Thats so funny. I loveeeeeee the lemongrass scent of the body wash. Looooovvvvve it.

Laughing at your lemongrass hate. 🤣

I also received the Grace & Stella masks, which I was super bummed about. Not only do I not use face masks, Grace & Stella is a private-label brand so these masks are marked up in RV for no reason, plus the set is too heavy to be worth shipping in a swap. So now I have this white elephant product that I have no idea what to do with. (…meanwhile some people got a lovely light blue Natasha Denona eyeliner pencil instead of these masks. I’m so jealous!)

I hate the double face palette spoilers for July, so I canceled. I hope I can stay strong & not re-sub for August!

Ooooh I was jealous of the ND pencil too. And in blue? SO RARE haha!

Cancelled all Boxy Charms. When it was selection time for the boxyluxe I could not choose anything so I emailed them and told them I would like a sip or a satin pillow case. I spent $50 on the box and got neither and just got a bunch of leftover junk so I promptly cancelled

I got those face mask sheets and hated them at first for the very same reasons. But after lying on my bed with one on in front of the air conditioner, the mask was nice and cool, good if you need to relax and not multitask.

I disliked the face masks too. It looks like they used their money on fancy packaging instead of product development. I tried the avocado mask but didn’t like the idea of leaving it on all night so rinsed it off after awhile. It was the reason i stuck with this box this month so glad to try it through Boxy.

I was actually interested in the Grace & Stella masks. But it sounds like it was a good thing I didn’t get them!

However I did get a Kat Von D eyeliner for the second month in a row and I’m horrible at applying eyeliner. At least last month’s was pretty and not the usual black I got this month.

I was also really bummed to get a shower gel… to me that’s more of a lifestyle product.

I am excited to try out the avacodo mask though that more than pays for my box …. so I’m not upset 😉

The avocado sleeping mask jar is SO CUTE. Glad to hear it performs well, also!

Box twins! I’m afraid to open the shower gel because I’ve had too many citronella and lemon pledge experiences 😂. I love a bright pink lip for summer and I’m always happy with another too faced palette. I’m going to have to stick with the watermelon mask as one I can sleep in. Both versions of the avacado work better for me if I rinse them away after 30 minutes.

Megan K.

Interesting! I will try rinsing.

I got this box. I had the exact same feeling about the masks– no one has lips that fit in that tiny slit, I don’t want to have to hold a gel mask on my face for 20 minutes, and my bathroom floor got more serum than my face from the packaging. Ugh. Complete waste of materials and resources to ship those heavy horrendous things to every subscriber.
I liked the milk stick color better than the color from last month. Haven’t tried the avocado mask, but I think I’ll like it.
