MSA Insiders Review the May IPSY Glam Bag Plus!

We're super excited to share this post with you! It's the second part of our new series where we invite you, the MSA community to review subscriptions with us. (If you missed the first part, check it out here!) And you can still sign up for MSA Insiders here, and you'll be considered for any future review assignments.

We partnered with IPSY to send some MSA Insiders the May IPSY Glam Bag Plus. We asked them to try all the products and let us know what their favorite item was. Here's what everyone received:

And here are their favorite products:

KATE SOMERVILLE® Kx Active Concentrates Ceramides + Omegas Serum

My favorite product in the IPSY Glam Bag this month was the Kate Somerville Soothe and Restore. I love Kate Somerville products and very excited to see this in my box. This is a pricey product and it was a surprise to see it in Ipsy. I love this product because you can layer it with other Kate Somerville Serums to meet your skin's needs. The product doesn't have a smell so it's great for sensitive noses like mine. When you put it on your skin, it doesn't feel greasy and leaves your skin feeling great. I love this product and will repurchase when I run out!

My favorite product that I sampled from the Ipsy May 2020 Glam Bag was the Kate Somerville Kx Active Concentrates Ceramides + Omegas Serum. As described on the box, it works to "soothe, hydrate, and shield skin against environmental stressors," and it certainly did just that for my skin! Lately, I've been experiencing lots of dry, rough, uneven, and irritable patches on my face, particularly around my nose, lips, and chin area. I applied 2-3 drops directly on my face and gently rubbed it in, making sure to also use my fingertips to press the serum into my skin. It absorbed quickly, and didn't leave a film or sticky feeling on my face. Almost instantly, I noticed results as my skin felt so much smoother and soft. After a few days of using this serum, the dry patches have vanished, my skin is glowing (even my boyfriend complimented me on it!), and it feels so hydrated and healthy. I follow up each use with my usual moisturizer and the two blend very well together. This Kate Somerville serum will definitely become a staple in daily skin care routine, and I would absolutely repurchase this product and recommend it to my friends.

I absolutely loved using Kate Somerville Ceramides & Omegas serum. I love the sleek minimalist look of the packaging and the lightweight dropper. It's a light/mild consistency which I appreciate as I do have control of application once the drops land on my skin. I've been using it for a few days & I am extremely happy with the way my skin has been feeling. I noticed a reduction of redness and an increase of hydration. So far, no irritation as I do have sensitive skin. Overall, I am pleased with the product and I'm sure to explore more products from the line.

The KATE SOMERVILLE® Kx Active Concentrates Ceramides + Omegas Serum for sure. My skin has been stressed due to everything going on (I break out in hives when I’m super stressed. Yay me!). I also made the mistake in laying in some grass that had some sort of chemical sprayed on it (didn’t realize it or course). This got my skin back on track after it spazzed out. It’s seriously a miracle serum and something I would never think to buy so I’m so grateful I got to try this! If you have sensitive skin or need some good moisture rebalancing, this serum is great. I think it would be great for after sun skin care as well.

SUPERGOOP Shimmershade Illuminating Cream Eyeshadow SPF 30 in Golden Hour

I have had my eye (pun intended) on the Supergoop! Shimmershade product for a while. I am a big fan of the Supergoop! PLAY Everyday Sunscreen (I love that it doesn't smell like your typical sunscreen) so, I was very excited when I saw it in the May Ipsy bag! The shade they sent is Golden Hour, a very shimmery gold color that's perfect for summer. I'm not sure how much protection this product provides and I would love to see the product under a UV camera. But, it is a fun product to add a little extra glam to your next trip to the beach or pool!

Jessica F.

My favorite product was Supergoop's Shimmershade eyeshadow in the color golden hour. The eyeshadow was creamy and easy to apply while providing SPF 30 protection. I found that the eyeshadow was pretty sheer meaning that you could wear it on its own or as part of an eye look. The SPF coverage is also super convenient since I typically do not apply sunscreen to the eye region as I'm afraid the chemicals will irritate my eyes. This eyeshadow on the other hand is incredibly gentle and light while providing protection.

Osmanee O.

I am thrilled with the Supergoop Shimmershade Illuminating Cream Eyeshadow SPF 30 in Golden Hour. I wear prescription glasses for distance vision and often do not have sunglasses on when outside and have actually burned on my eyelids frequently but applying a sunscreen gets in my eyes and hurts. This product goes on and stays put!! All while giving a shimmering glow. I will get other shades!!! It’s beautiful and functional!

Sandra A.

My favorite product was the Super goop Shimmershade Illuminating Cream Eyeshadow SPF 30. I love the concept of spf in your make up and this is such a beautiful eyeshadow. It’s creamy and easy to wear on the daily. The color is a beautiful champagne color that would be so pretty with all summer looks.

NOMAD COSMETICS NOMAD x Sydney Bathers Kiss Of Sun Palette

My favorite product sampled is the Normad cosmetics Kiss of Sun Palette. I loved the highlighters. All three were very subtle highlighter and beautiful colours. I used all four shades as eyeshadows and it was very pretty on the eyes, for an everyday eye look. The bronzer worked well as a transition shade. The bronzer shade was a little light but it gave me a subtle contour and bronze. The pictures show me using all four shades on my eyes and the Balmoral beach highlighter on my cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. I used the bronzer to contour and bronze my face.

Marina P.

Out of the products I sampled in the May Ispy Glam Bag Plus, I was surprised that I loved the Nomad x Sydney Bathers Kiss of Sun Palette the most! All of the colors blended well with my fair/light skintone which is not something I find often with these types of palettes. Even the darker Bondi Beach looked well and gave me that sun-kissed glow (especially with a tinted moisturizer) without being obvious that I was wearing makeup. Balmoral Beach is great for a nighttime highlighter while Tamarama Beach is subtle enough for the day. I am not big into contouring, but Manly Beach (actually all of them) worked well as an eyeshadow for me! This palette is something I will use a lot and I am so happy that I got a chance to discover it!

Erika J.

My favorite product this month is the Nomad bronzers. This is a versatile product which makes getting ready a breeze. I used balmoral beach (the lightest shade) on my eyes and tamarama beach as a cheek highlight. Manly beach makes a great brozer since it is matte. I then swirled all the shimmer shades together and swiped down the center of my legs to add a healthy glow.

MURAD Renewing Eye Cream

I absolutely loved the Murad Renewing Eye Cream. As I get older I realize how important it is to pamper delicate skin such as the eye area in order to prevent wrinkles. Unfortunately I don't always want to invest the time and money into finding a good eye cream, so I was pretty excited to receive this product. Initially I noticed that it has a pleasant, subtle scent. The ingredients don't list any added perfume, so it must be from the plant extracts. The cream itself is very rich and moisturizing without being sticky or goopy. The cream isn't heavy or greasy, it just feels nourishing. After applying this product the first time my eyes instantly looked younger and more refreshed. Within a few days of use I noticed a decrease in dark circles, and the skin around my eyes appeared much more hydrated and plump. I also apply the cream to my neck and have noticed the skin there feels much more moisturized as well. I'm very happy with the Renewing Eye Cream from Murad and will continue to use it in addition to my regular moisturizer from now on.

So that’s where all the Supergoop went! I haven’t seen any unboxings or real reviews where someone received it.

RubyWhoWhoo

Me either and I have seen a ton of unboxings and no Super Goop. No Kate Somerville either. Would have loved to have gotten either. Not crazy about Ipsy putting out spoilers like this and only including them in a tiny fraction of boxes. Not typically like Ipsy, hope it doesn’t continue. Looks like they took a page from Boxycharm.

I signed up to be considered for a future reviewer and after signing up my page said “we’ll follow up soon” but I never got a confirmation email or anything, did my form register so I can be considered for future reviews?

I love this feature!

I’m so happy to see swatches and looks with the Nomad palette! It is in the last minute add ons, but I wasn’t sure that it would work for me.

Ladies, I applaud your reviews!
I love to hear from fellow justyouraverage users, lol This is exactly what I need to compare my personal experience with others. To confirm if I used it correctly (lol) and if my experience was comparable.
Thank you very much for your reviews!

This is a nice new feature. The only item I received that the reviewers received is the Nomad Palette after I requested to be removed from receiving highlighters and bronzers. I have to admit it is a nice palette and I will use the shades for eyeshadow or blush. Did anyone notice how tiny the plus makeup bag was? I was disappointed because the glam plus bags are supposed to be bigger. I hope this isn’t a new trend.

I’m not a fan of getting a bag with my Plus subscription. Not getting a bag was part of why I upgraded from the basic Glam Bag.

When it arrived, I had my husband break the zip so I could add the tassel to my purse, which is kind of dripping with tassels that I pulled off of other bags. Makes the otherwise plain purse kind of festive.

As for opting out but getting it anyways, that’s just one of those things.

At this point I’d be happy to actually get my May gb & gbp! I’m sick of the run around! Personally I think if someone subscribes to all three, theirs should be priority & mailed out first. Its seriously frustrating to see others who receive subs free of charge get theirs first…especially celebs.

I didn’t receive any of the above featured products, but I was happy with what I did get. My favorite was a nail polish, I must have appeased the Ipsy gods because I always receive nail polish.

And yes, the bags were a bit smaller, especially the “basic” Ipsy bag. I loved the ombré effect though. It will be interesting to see if they get smaller. I hope not!

Thanks for your reviews, ladies! Great job, love the photos.

I got the “Mimosa Moment” eyeshadow palette from Coloured Raine (that’s not the item I picked this month), and the packaging states “Specially made by ipsy for Coloured Raine”. Huh?????????? Made *by* ipsy?

Also, if you Google “Coloured Raine Cosmetics”, it says right under the company name “Cruelty free cosmetics made in the USA.” Riiiiiight. We really believe you. The packaging on this palette states “Made in China”. I emailed Coloured Raine to ask about this contradiction, but of course they didn’t bother to reply.

I’m so over the deceptions of companies. Stop pretending and just say the truth: “we buy mass-made stuff from China, who cares whether the ingredient list is truthful, and slap a brand name label on it.”

Ashley

I urge everyone on this site because we all love makeup and skincare and a deal to watch “Broken” on Netflix which is a four part documentary. Pay special attention to the “Cosmetics” one. It’s very eye opening. I can’t take credit for the suggestion; another fellow MSA’er suggested it on another post.

I may be totally wrong here but boxy charm does the same thing. These large subscription Box companies reach out to cosmetic companies and say we’d love to feature your product in one of our boxes but we’re not going to pay full Price. So they contract with the cosmetic company to actually manufacture that same product much cheaper with their own companies In China Or wherever. My understanding is that it is supposed to be a product with the same integrity and formula as the one the cosmetic sells, the packaging will be slightly different but it has been produced at a fraction of the cost. That way Ipsy can put a product in your bag That’s cost-effective to them but still provides a good product for the consumer. There’s no way for Ipsy to stay in business if they actually bought all original products directly from each cosmetic and or skin care company. They basically buy the rights to manufacture the products in their own facilities at a very reduced cost. I’m not sure if I’m explaining it correctly but you can certainly find lots of articles about this very kind of thing that Boxycharm has done and is doing. I believe that all companies should be transparent on how they do business and how products are procured. They might as well explain it upfront to avoid future unhappy customers.

Wow, if that’s true, Kathy, that’s a terrible business model! Imagine allowing your brand name to be dragged into the mud by allowing someone to “borrow” your good name and slap it on an inferior product made in an unknown factory under unknown conditions using unknown and inferior ingredients.

It’s hard to see how it advances the goal establishing a long-term relationship with a potential customer by sending them a knockoff with your name on it.

Dea

I did not know that, Kathy, and I thank you for educating me. Now I know how it works. How disappointing. I have absolutely no problem with economics and business models and the concept of what it takes to stay in business; I have a problem with not stating the truth up front.

I wonder how many items in my monthly ipsy bag were even “born” in the manufacturing facilities of the company names they bear and transported to ipsy, versus how many were created 100% in the Chinese factories of ipsy.

Joelle

A lot of major companies manufacturer their sample sizes in China. Tarte, Ciate, TooFaced, Iconic….the list goes on.

Alice

Completely agree.

Reply ButtonReply

Brie

Couldn’t agree more! I was SO disappointed in the Coloured Raine Cosmetics as it honestly feels like a bait and switch! I was genuinely excited to try their brand and the y proudly announce they’re “Made in USA” only on their website but clearly not! Nomad is open about where and how they manufacture in China but Colored Raine was an unpleasant surprise. At least the other products were “legit” and useful. Love the community reviews!
