Medusa's Make-Up April 2020 "Get Happy" Review

Along with my four beauty items, I received an info card that details what items are in the box, as well as a sticker that says "GET HAPPY" which is also the theme this month.

Medusa's Make-Up Witch Hazel Waikiki Hibiscus Facial Toner, 1 oz. - Retail Value $12.95

This is quite a refreshing toner! The mist is excellent as well- very fine and covers a lot of area in one spritz. The mix of fruity and floral fragrance is a bit much for a toner, but it is soft so it's not too offensive. This toner contains witch hazel and aloe which both calm my skin and the skinny 1-ounce bottle easily slips into a toiletries bag and is TSA-approved. That will matter again one day!

Beauty Host Cucumber Facial Mask - Retail Value $4.99

I have a confession. I secretly threw shade at this mask because it looks like a basic drugstore brand from the package. Guess what? I was wrong to judge- this cucumber mask is full of hydration and felt cooling and nice on my skin! After my 10 minutes were up, the serum was easily massaged into my skin and didn't feel overly heavy or goopy. My skin felt refreshed!

Medusa's Make-Up Liquid Eyeshadow in Marilyn - Retail Value $13.00 (on sale for $3.99)

Even though dark pigmented shadows have a tendency to be tough for me to blend, I was really pumped to try this color that spoke to my goth soul. The black sparkly liquid shadow comes in a short square tube that looks like a liquid lip I can glide onto my lids with the doe-foot applicator. I have a long way to go to master liquid shadow, but this one was more troubling than I expected. It went on pretty blotchy and it was hard to get an even coat on. It felt quite greasy and didn't seem to dry down to a more powdery finish as I expected it would. I didn't even snap a pic because I looked a lot like a toddler who had applied makeup for the first time. I'm sure there is a master of this product out there somewhere who can make it work, but it is not me. Sad times.

Medusa's Make-Up Matte Liquid Lipstick in Shag - Retail Value $11.95

I love love love this color... in the tube. Sadly, I just do not care for it on my lips. The bright coral color screams that spring is here but I feel a little silly wearing it. I also have realized that Medusa's matte formula is just not one I love. It feels a little cakey and sticky and will eventually become very dry and rub or flake off in a way that simply is not flattering. Upon trying to remove it all, I was left with a ring of bright coral around the outer edge of my lips. Le sigh. It looks so cool in the tube!

Here are swatches of the lipstick and liquid shadow.

Verdict: Medusa's Make-Up Beauty Box was not my friend this month. I loved unboxing everything because the colors were so bold, but the shadow and lipstick just didn't deliver on the level I wanted them to. The toner is nice as long as you don't mind some fragrance and the mask was much better than I expected. What a rollercoaster ride of emotion! The total retail for this box is $42.89 which is good for a $16.95 box, but it only included one item that I really enjoyed a lot.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Orders are generally processed within 1-3 business days, so you will likely receive May as your first box.

Value Breakdown: At $16.95 for this box, here's what you're paying for each item:

  • Toner: $5.12
  • Mask: $1.97
  • Liquid Shadow: $5.14
  • Lipstick: $4.72

I agree with everyone else…that color does look good on you. As it is a very vibrant color, I think it needs to go with a face with more products (eyeliner, etc), and I would probably add liner and maybe some gloss or something (I’m a glossaholic, so I’m hopeless with matte lippies).
I loved getting this box, and hope to resubscribe when I can afford it again. Admittedly, a lot of the colors didn’t suit my pasty complexion…but then a lot of colors that I would never have thought to try are now in my daily rotation.
IMO , this box was the best $16.95 I’ve spent on a subscription box so far.

I disagree about the lipstick, I think it looks cute on you! That black eye shadow though is disappointing.

I agree about the mask. It looked so cheap, but when I put it on I was so shocked at how good it felt! I went and bought a pack of them on their website they are on sale, and the price is great!
