Vegancuts Snack Box April 2020 Review

Vegancuts had a pretty solid year last year. Let’s see what they sent for April:

There was an information card this month. (The cards have been inconsistently included in recent months.)

Plant Snacks Sea Salt Cassava Root Chips (1.25 oz) - Buy 3, 5 oz bags for $14.49

These are OK. If you have read my other snack box reviews, you will know I am not a huge fan of "sea salt" flavored anything chips and crackers. I just find it too plain. That is also the case here. In a past month we received a vegan "cheddar" flavored version of this snack that I actually thought was pretty good. These are gluten free and made from cassava and have a cracker-like texture that works pretty well. But they really need something else, even if just hummus or salsa or possibly peanut butter.

Rind Straw-Peary Blend (1.5 oz) - Buy 3, 3 oz bags for $17.99

I have had a lot of snacks from this brand in the past and I was a little worried when I saw this because sometimes this brand's products are a little tough to chew. I think I mentioned this in a previous snack box review but my permanent retainer wire has come unbonded from two adjacent teeth and eating has been a chore lately. In normal times I would go to the dentist or orthodontist and get that fixed immediately but these are not normal times and we are looking at least to June before I can do anything other than cut it out myself with jewelry-making tools. So. I am trying to avoid tough foods. But as it turns out, this was NOT particularly tough, and was easy to chew, and was tasty. As an added bonus, pears and strawberries really do make up the bulk of the blend, with only a little apple.

U-Luv Brownie Cookies (4 oz) - Buy 3 bags for $14.99

I was really looking forward to these based on the spoilers and, well, I am sad because they are really not good. They are dry, kind of like powder was compressed into a cake with very few liquid ingredients (in other words, the opposite of a brownie, which should be gooey) and they are sweetened partially with monk fruit extract which leaves them with a very strange and unpleasant undertaste. There were a lot of them in the bag but I did not want to finish the bag.

Eloa Organic Aloe Vera Drink Lychee Flavor (16.9 fl oz) - Buy 12 bottles for $20

This was another one that, while new to me, was not really for me. The flavor was fine, it was totally a texture issue. There is a lot of aloe pulp in here and I have just never been into drinking things with suspended "stuff." The aloe pulp reminded me of those swellable acrylamide granules you put in plants when you aren't going to be able to water them very much (or like bits of acrylamide gels for electrophoresis if you have ever done that in a science lab). On the other hand, the ingredients seem nice otherwise and this is quite reasonably priced for a large bottle of an organic drink.

Love Good Fats Coconut Macadamia Nut Bar (1.41 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $27.99

This is the first of several items this month that are both vegan and keto-friendly, which is an astonishingly small overlap in the Venn diagram where vegan foods and keto foods each make up a circle. The two diets are just opposed to each other in many ways, from environmental impact (vegan diets are way better for the environment than keto diets) to macronutrient content (vegan being more balanced overall). Anyway, that being said, I thought this was OK but a little plain, like the macadamia nuts weren't really detectable because usually those have a noticeable flavor to me. It had a good texture and wasn't too hard to cut into tiny bits, which has been my strategy for avoiding biting into things because of the aforementioned retainer issue.

Split Almond Butter and Blueberry Spread (0.34 oz) - Buy 10 packs for $24.95

This is a repeat item. I let my husband have it last time because I am not normally a fan of jellies and fruit spreads (I've always just done plain nut butter). He liked the pouches individually but thought the proportions were off. He says when you make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you normally use a lot less jelly than peanut butter, and here, you have equal amounts of fruit spread and almond butter. I would probably increase the almond butter by about 50% and decrease the blueberry by about 50% and then I think the proportions would be better. This may be intended for eating directly out of the pouch? In which case your opinion on the amounts might be different. Anyway, if you'd like to try just one of these instead of springing for a whole case, I've seen them at Whole Foods (where I am currently going at 8AM on Saturdays in a mask and equipped with hand sanitizer to buy my food for the week...it is my only trip out of the house for a whole week).

Bakery on Main Organic Happy Granola Sprouted Blueberry Flax (1.1 oz) - Buy 11 oz for $6.50

This brand shows up a lot in food subscription boxes and their products are usually pretty good, especially since they are also gluten free (while I understand the need for GF products, sometimes they are just not quite the same in terms of flavor and texture as their non-GF counterparts). This has a decent texture. But I didn't remember there was supposed to be blueberry in it -- I sure didn't see any -- until I started writing this review when I looked at the list of items in the box. It had a pretty generic vanilla flavor, the kind of thing that would be good for a topping if you are making a (dairy-free) ice cream sundae or a (dairy-free) yogurt parfait or something of that nature.

Blake's Seed Based S'Mores Snack Bar (1.23 oz) - Buy 12 for $23.99

This is free of the 8 major allergens, plus sesame, so it is school safe. I can see that it might appeal to kids, although it doesn't really remind me of s'mores at all. The chocolate is faint and there's nothing marshmallow-like (I mean I don't eat regular marshmallows because of gelatin although I am a big fan of Dandies). It is kind of sweet and doesn't taste bad at all, and isn't too hard, has generally good ingredients, and actually is fairly reasonably-priced for an allergen-free snack, it just doesn't remind me of s'mores.

Good to Go Double Chocolate Soft Baked Bar (1.9 oz) - Buy 9 bars for $23.94

Here is another vegan/keto snack. I was really surprised to find out this didn't contain any coconut because it had a texture, when chewed, that reminded me of other products containing small coconut pieces and/or coconut oil. It has inulin (a prebiotic fiber that also has a bit of sweetness to it) and is also sweetened with a sugar alcohol (erythritol) and stevia. I normally don't like stevia in drinks, but find it OK in foods, and that was the case here, too. This has apple cider vinegar, for what purpose, I am not sure. At least I couldn't taste it! Honestly, this is OK for what it is, but a bit pricey since you are only getting 9 bars in a box instead of the usual 12.

Skout Organic Chocolate Cherry Protein Bar (1.9 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $29.99

There are two strategies for making a bar snack. The first is to have all the ingredients showing (like KIND bars). The second is to homogenize everything, which is the strategy here. I am fine with this because the texture is usually more uniform (actually the texture of this was pretty good). The only thing is, sometimes you lose out on some of the flavor. Like I could taste the chocolate but the cherry was not noticeable at all. These are primarily date and seed bars but do a better job of masking that than most other date and seed (or date and nut) bars. Not that date and seed bars are bad, but they all tend to resemble one another, and these stand out a little by being different. They have 18g of sugar per bar, though, which, while from natural sources, is rather high for me. (It's also probably why I like them...)

Earth Chimp Vegan Protein Superblend Chocolate (1 serving) - Buy 26 servings for $42.99 (found here for $37.99)

This is a new brand for me but, based on the number of Amazon reviews, has probably been around for awhile. It has probiotics and digestive enzymes as well as fiber. It has a lot of protein as well (20g) although I don't think it is suitable as a meal replacement as it doesn't have hardly any fat at all. Although you could blend this into a smoothie with some nut butter and make it more balanced. I find it OK in my standard smoothie recipe (which also includes cacao powder, hemp seeds, frozen fruit, matcha, and some powdered greens, plus almond milk) but I think I would probably not like it on its own because of the monk fruit, which I discussed earlier with respect to the brownie cookies. This is high in some minerals like zinc and manganese and selenium; I know zinc is somewhat hard to get in vegan diets, so that is a nice bonus.

Verdict: This month’s Vegancuts Snack Box had 10 items for an average value per item of about $2.27. There were a couple of things I was not particularly fond of for flavor or texture reasons, but most of these items were new to me and there were some pleasant surprises as well. Some of the brands were better known (Skout, Bakery on Main) if you subscribe to a lot of snack boxes, but there were plenty of smaller, niche brands as well, and I think in general Vegancuts does a good job of reaching out to smaller and lesser known brands to be included in boxes, which is important for the discovery aspect of a subscription box. Kind of hoping everything is not gluten free next month, though, as there is no real reason to avoid gluten unless a doctor has told you to.

To Wrap Up:
