Universal Yums “Scandinavia” April 2020 Review

Universal Yums is awesome! We have always looked forward to receiving this box in the mail, but now when we are mandated to stay at home, it really has become like a field trip for us! This month features treats from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Because I am over 50% Norwegian, I was really excited to see what this box had in store!

Upon opening the box, you are greeted with a bright, fun, animated sheet that welcomes us to the wonderful countries of Scandinavia! On the backside, they include "The Official Yum Awards." This ballot is where you can cast your vote for your favorite and not so favorite snacks in the box. If you post your ballot on social media, you could win more of your favorite snacks!

Next, we have a detailed pamphlet that is packed with information about this month's snacks, trivia, a matching game, a recipe, and a clue to next month's box! Because most of the nutritional information on the packaging is not in English, they have recently added that info right in the pamphlet for easy access!

KiM's Snack Chips Supersprod Original - Buy an 8 pack for $11.20

We are all about the savory treats in our household, so these potato snacks were very much welcome! I love when a chip has ripples, so these were knocking it out of the park straight out of the gate! They also were quite a bit thicker than my usual potato chip, which gave them even more crunch. The flavoring was a mix of paprika and cayenne with the perfect amount of salt added. I was impressed!

Draumur - Buy a 5 pack for $5.50

Milk chocolate + salted caramel + crispy = love of my life!!! This velvety chocolate is smooth and creamy with the perfect amount of crunch with the crispies sprinkled throughout. It reminded me of an amped up Crunch bar with a salted caramel spin on it! I'll take more, please!

Salmiakki-Matto - Buy an 8 pack for $9.60

I'm not a fan of black licorice, but wanted to give this a try...and oh man I did not like this! This salty black licorice was so extremely strong tasting and very bitter. In the pamphlet, they mention that the flavor salmiak (ammonium chloride) was once used as a medicine to clear stuffy sinuses, and was probably first created to entice children to take their medicines - if this was supposed to entice someone what did the original medicine taste like!? Only Hank would try this after he saw my face, and he spit it right out. My husband gave it a shot and actually slightly enjoyed the chewy texture and strong flavoring.

Choko-Flager - Buy a 5 pack for $5.40

I think I have found my new favorite oat cookie! These crispy oat cookies are filled with the perfect amount of cocoa filling. They bring a perfect combination of lightly sweet and chocolate together in every bite. I also find the size of the cookie perfect for a light snack, but could definitely eat the entire package in one sitting just because they are that addicting. Not only do they taste delicious, but they look beautiful in a rustic way and the kids loved them!

KiM's American Grill Chips - Buy an 8 pack for $10.40

Woo hoo! Another chip with ridges! These American grill flavored chips have a blend of onion, tomato, paprika, and chili pepper which didn't exactly taste like a grill to me, but I swear I detected a hint of a pickle in that mix! These weren't quite as thick as the previous ripple chips, but had a decent flavoring and the kids and I really enjoyed them!

Cool Hallon Skalle Skum - Buy 2 packages for $10.00

Sour, sweet, and so very addicting are the first words that come to mind when thinking of these raspberry sour gummies! And how cute are the little skull shapes? Their chewy texture was perfect, and the kids loved lapping up the extra sugar at the bottom of the bag. I think these win at the favorite of the month!

KiM's Ostepops Original

We love cheese puffs in this house, and these ones turned out to be our new fave! Unlike the cheese puffs we are used to, these pack a strongly cheese flavored punch which we love! We found this new bold flavor to be salty and addicting, with the best crunchy, rather than chewy texture! My boys were also excited because the red packaging and the look of the cheese puffs is similar to the packaged featured in the "Onward" movie, so they felt that they were eating something a bit magical.

Franske Vafler

Another larger package! I love when they send these, especially when we like the product, which in this case we do!! These very flakey, very sweet puff pastries are filled with a delicious cream filling. They are of a good size, and even the broken ones were quite striking with the cinnamon and sugar dusted on top. To be honest, they remind me of when I let my kids use cookie cutters to bake any of my remaining pie crust, and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, but this takes it up a notch by adding the cream in between for an epic surprise! Yum!!

Tasty Potato Sticks

This was a really decent sized pack of these sour cream and onion potato sticks, which always are a hit in our house. We found these sticks to have a really bold flavor thanks to a strong kick of sour cream! While they are deliciously crunchy to snack on by themselves, I plan on adding these to the top of my cheesy hashbrown casserole for a bonus crunch!

Chok Skalle Jordgubb Kola

More skull shaped treats! Hooray!! Featuring a similar shape as the raspberry gummies, these delicious milk chocolate treats are filled with strawberry and caramel cream! While I wasn't quite sure what a strawberry caramel cream would taste like, I can say I am a fan! The strawberry was just subtle enough and the caramel just blended in really nicely into a flavor that was new to my palate. The kids of course were obsessed, and before I could say "Chok Skalle Jordgubb Kola," they were gone.

Pepperkaks Kola

I personally am a big fan of toffee, but I have to admit, I am not the biggest fan of gingerbread. Don't worry, that didn't stop me from giving this Yum a chance! Initially the toffee is quite hard to chew, but after a few moments in your mouth, it becomes extremely chewy with a blast of ginger! At first, I thought it was a bit too much and didn't care for it, but as I chewed I because increasingly fond of it, to the point I almost wanted another one! I think this gingerbread toffee could grow on me...

Not-Creme

Shut. Up. Where have these been all of my life?! I have no words. These cookie dough pralines are absolutely amazing! Outside you have a creamy chocolate coating with a bit of a praline flavor, and inside you have a soft, sugary, delicious scoop of cookie dough! Everything about this candy is delicious. My only qualm- they only sent 2!!! I. NEED. MORE!!!

Kolafabriken Fizzy Toffee

When I saw "Fizzy" on the packaging, I thought this was going to actually fizz in my mouth or something, so I was a little disappointed when that didn't happen. Even though they didn't actually fizz, I found the bubblegum flavor of this toffee to be a lot better than I was expecting. Usually bubblegum to me is really fake tasting, but this was really yummy, with even a blue raspberry flavor noted. Like most toffees, this one was sticky and chewy, and extremely addicting!

The Verdict: We love Universal Yums, and especially today, we need all of things to look forward to that we can, and this is one of them! While we are doing currently doing all of our school work online, this has been a hands-on activity that gives us a geography lesson as well as a culinary lesson! The Scandinavia box was a hit with our family, as there was only one item we didn't care for- and my husband thought it was okay, so it didn't go to waste! Being this month came from Norway, we also were able to talk a little bit about our ancestry, which was an added bonus! We can't wait to find out where our May box is coming from! Our clue is this:

May will bring flowers- the saying holds true. There'll be jasmine and orchids in every bright hue! But even more stunning are this country's natural flavors - from sweet yam to coconut, there's oodles to savor!

Any guesses?!

Scorecard picks:

  • Best Yum: Cookie Dough Pralines
  • Runner-up: Cool Hallon Skalle Skum
  • Worst Yum: Salmiakki-Matto
  • Most Unusual: Pepperkakas Kola

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No. Each month they ship your box no later than the 15th day of the month. The first month you will receive a box varies based on availability and may depend on the size that you order.

Value Breakdown: This box is $25.00 a month (including shipping). I received 20 individually wrapped snacks which averages out to $1.25 per item.

We just signed up and got the Scandi box on Friday. OMG the kids loved the whole thing – the packaging, the treats, the surprise factor. Those potato sticks were a big hit with all four of us so they didn’t last long, drat! As a test run, although the price per item is high, the overall fun value was a keeper so onward to orchids and whatever else they teased for next month!
Wondering how long shipping took for everyone – while I totally get that shipping isn’t normal right now, they shipped on the 15th and it arrived in CA on the 24th. FedEx provided one update from Indianapolis midpoint and then it was a black hole until it arrived. Surprise!

After my Jagar days… No more black licorice for me… And due to being a recovering alcoholic no more Nyquil for me too!!

I’m 100% with you on the candy! Taste like my flash backs of bad decisions.

Awesome box over all. It’s fun with the different countries ❤

My favorite this month was the puff pastry! At first it was just okay but the more I kept eating, I just kept loving it more and more! It kind of tasted like a stroopwafel to me. My boyfriend and I split the box usually – he gets all the spicy things and I get an equal amount to make up for that, and we usually share the chocolate or cookie items. It’s fun to read the descriptions and try new foods every month. We love it, and I can’t wait to come on here and see what everyone else thinks when the review comes up, too!

cheese doodles were a surprise hit in this house – they were infinitely more tasty than US versions. we all tried a tiny piece of the licorice, but it went straight to the trash after that.

I get so excited when I come home to find the familiar blue and white box sitting on my doorstep. Always a perfect balance of sweet and savory snacks to look forward to. I love the red licorice nibs and the cookie dough creams. The center tastes like liquid graham crackers. Yum! The Philippines is a good guess for next month or possibly India?

My son and I really look forward to this box every month. We read the booklet and do the quizzes. We’ve learned a lot about the countries as well as the treats! We both loved the chocolate cookies and the box was a bigger hit than last month’s. I don’t do licorice, so I didn’t even try it, but my son did and pronounced it inedible LOL.

I love black licorice, so that was one of my favorite things in the box. I read somewhere that only 25% of people like black licorice–so I am clearly not the norm. It is super popular in Scandinavia though, so they honestly could not do a box from that region without including it.

I hated the draumur bar–way too cloying. I ate one bite and spit it out in the trash. I like how this box brings out so many unique taste buds!

I grew up on salty licorice . It makes me think of bracing sea salt wind. I forgot how much I miss it. Yummy

On their fb page, Universal Yums confirmed may is phillipines and June will be UK. I got the smallest box for this month and so glad I did. I couldn’t eat the licorice. The cookies were the best to me. Those cookie dough chocolates were too sweet for me. And loved that Draumur chocolate from Iceland.

This was our first universal yum box and we loved it. From the fun trivia to the tasty discoveries, it was a great experience!

I believe the next box may be the Philippines – looking forward to a new adventure 🙂

I just got my family sized box today ( I know!) and I thought there were way too many crunch snacks compared to chocolates or fruit flavored softer treats.

I hate chips, literally. Without them, the box is almost empty looking. Hubby eats ALL the chips, in a rational manner, of course.
The worst for me thus far has been the caramel popcorn with just a hint of caramel and tons of salt. Blech.

I threw out the licorice as I consider it to not even be a food. LOL.

Next month is definitely a Pacific coastal island or nation. I agree with the other person who said Philippines.

It’s just my husband and I at home and we get the small box, $15. Perfect size for two people. Like most men, he poo pooed me at first. Now it’s, when does yum come and what country are we getting. If you have an extra $15 to spare I highly recommend this box, your spouse/family will love you for it.

Same here, Lisa! My boyfriend was skeptical and a bit peeved about the box at first and now as soon as it comes he is grabbing the pair of scissors to rip it open!! 😂 We split the box pretty fairly, since I can’t eat spicy things. We share some and then get our individual things. It works out well!

Agreed. I bought a year for my 16 year old son for Christmas gift and at first he was apathetic to it. Now, for the last three months he has been asking when it will arrive!

My box will be here on Friday and I can’t wait! I had to get a one time small box to get Scandinavia, but I’ll get the Yum Yum box in May. I sounds like the Philippines for May, but how does that work if I was able to choose a different country for my first box? Do I get my choice and then next month get the same as everyone else?

Thanks for a great review! It’s so true that looking forward to this (and my other) box is lifting my spirits 🙂
