BoxyCharm April 2020 Review

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included.

This review is for box variant #19.

Let's see what I received!

Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional: Hydrate Primer, 0.75 fl oz - Retail Value $32.00

Benefit is one of my fave cosmetic brands because the products work well and the brand itself is quite nostalgic for me. My bestie Julie use to work for them and she would shower me in so many products! I have always loved the cute retro packaging, too. This primer is pretty much a dream. It feels incredible on my dry skin (I am super happy I received the "hydrating" formula!) and smells great. My makeup sits really well on top and I have started wearing it even if I am not wearing a lot of makeup because it makes my skin look smoother for my Zoom meetings.

Zoeva 'Cocoa Blend' Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $28.00

Ok, wow. I am really impressed with these shadows. The colors I ended up with are stunning. I think there were like 10 different palettes options and I am really pleased with this demure 'Cocoa Blend' one. These shadows are made in Italy and are so buttery smooth and blendable! The only one I found to be a little lacking was the 'Substitute for Love' shade, but with a little extra attention is was also gorgeous on. My faves are the marshmallowy matte 'Bitter Start', the taupe shimmer 'Sweeter End', and the grey-lavender shimmer 'Delicate Acidity.' I hope to see more of these palettes offered by Boxy!

Top to bottom: Bitter Start, Sweeter End, Warm Note, Subtle Blend, and Beans are White

Top to bottom: Pure Ganache, Substitute for Love, Freshly Toasted, Infusion, and Delicate Acidity

Hank & Henry Midori Sponge Pair - Retail Value $23.00 (on sale for $20)

There is something really loveable about the loud chartreuse green of these sponges. You certainly won't lose them in your vanity anytime soon! Both of these are a square base shape that tapers up into a fine point. This is great for applying all over foundation as well as using that point for highlighter and buffing out concealer. Between the two sizes, I will get a lot of use out of these, especially after wetting them for more sheer applications.

Dose of Colors Lip It Up Satin Lipstick in 'Mochi', 3 g - Retail Value $17.00

I really, really wanted to love this lipstick. Even the name is something I adore! It actually looked really pretty on my arm as a swatch too, but on my lips it was kind of a nightmare. I don't know if it was my skin acidity or what, but that pretty spring pink turned into a chalky pastel pink that looks terrible on me. Formula wise, I like this finish that feels a little matte, a little satin. I would totally give this lipstick another try, just in a very, very different color.

I mean, this looks promising, right?

NOPE.

Battington Beauty Harlow Lash with Glue - Retail Value $31.00

Finally, our last item is a set of really beautiful lashes and some glue. I don't wear lashes often (especially right now...) but I am going to certainly hang on to these because I love the look of them. They have a very wispy design that makes me think of lash extensions. They also should add a more natural-looking level of volume than so many others I see come in boxes.

Verdict: My BoxyCharm box has an overall value of $128.00 which is great for a $25 box. The assortment was a little hit or miss for me this time though. I loved the palette and primer, and think the sponges and lashes will be put to good use. The lipstick was a major dud for me and I consider it unwearable, at least for myself. The formula was great though, I just think I ended up with the wrong color. Either way, the cost of that awesome primer alone more than covers the price of this box, so it is hard not to be pleased with this value overall.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, this box is still available, but there are variations! These boxes do sell out, so if you love it, hurry.

Value Breakdown: At $25.00 for this box, here is approximately what you are paying per product:

  • Benefit Cosmetics Primer $6.25
  • Zoeva Palette $5.47
  • Hank & Henry Sponges $3.91
  • Dose of Colors Lipstick $3.32
  • Battington Lashes $6.05

Alternatively, the average cost of each of the 5 items is $5.00.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

SO weird. Mine came today and there was no box. It was in a beat-up envelope and it looks like there are several products missing. Looks like it got damaged at FedEx and they just threw together whatever they could!

I didn’t receive my April choice email so I was happy to receive the pallete since that’s what I chose.

I received variation 10♡ & my box weight was 1.1 lbs. I received:

Zoeva Caramel Melange Pallete – This is the one I was hoping for!

Dose of Colors lipstick in Glazed – Beautiful peachy pink but unfortunately turned my lips into concealer lips. Would’ve been the perfect shade if it was darker 😕 I’m going to try with a darker lip liner.

Iconic London Illuminator Drops in Original – Meh…I already have some in a different brand that will last a lifetime.

Benefit Porefessional Hydrate – Don’t use primer but everyone received 😕

TonyMoly Sheet Masks – I like sheet masks and I’m glad they included 3 as it seems more full size.

Overall I’m okay with my box. I would’ve been happy with almost any of the items featured this month.

Question pertaining to the April box – Does anyone remember the recent month when Iconic London lip gloss was in base box? I received one then and another in my April Box. I hope to contact them and request a different item.
They promise no duplicates,correct?

so glad i quit boxy. i got out right when the price jumped and honestly for the trouble it seems to be with all these great improvements i’m glad i abandoned ship… all good things must come to an end…sigh miss the old boxycharm. we still got good products for a good price and i already expected them to totally ignore my choices on my profile and i was ok with it for 21 dollars. I even highly recommended them to everyone i came across. now they want you to pay more and ignore that anyway….no thanks and i almost resubscribed and i was going to use the promo code for the violet voss sugar crystals palette and it wouldn’t take the code! a promo code i received that same day and i tried to talk to customer service about it and they wouldn’t help me instead they gave me different codes for a shadow palette i received in a boxy box almost a solid year ago and wouldn’t honor a code they sent me that same day!!! Honestly… WOW and yes i was totally within the set parameters for the promotional code. i like good makeup but at this rate i’m ready to try a different company or wait until they straighten this out. i’ll keep that money and buy a cute summer sundress. unless you don’t have 3 storage shelves packed with makeup already from years of obsession and product overload like i already do there’s no reason to suffer through that… i was with them nearly a solid 3 years until this. they need to get it back together….what is there to keep people loyal when there’s so many of us that suffer from product overload as it is. i love new things i like mystery in the mail but i can get that elsewhere without someone not even keeping to an offer made that same day. supes disappointed with them lately.

So i received my box today and my choice was wrong. I contacted Boxycharm and they said they never received my choice for April which is weird because yesterday i tried to choose the May choice and it just wouldn’t take and I never got a confirmation email about it either so i did it again today :(. Some kind of glitch because i had to go back in 3 times to get my choice to register. Oh well the april box had eyelashes which i don’t wear and profile says so. I got brushes which are ok and benefit primer that was in everyone’s box. I got highligher which i do not use and my profile states it but I will gift it. The last item was a palette which I am currently on overload but this is a really pretty palette so I guess I’m still happy. Hopefully next month I get the choice I actually chose.

My choice was wrong as well…so frustrating!

Same… Was sent with wrong item… So disappointed…

Marie

I got the Elemis hydration juice, Makeup Eraser, Benefit Primer, Hank and Henry sponges and the eye brushes. A utilitarian box this month. No makeup. But I’m okay with that since I got a lot of makeup in my premium box.

Laura

Do you recall the weight of your box’ variation possibly? I chose the moisturizer too, and my box apparently weighs 1.375 and I can’t find anyone w a similar weighted box…mine isn’t getting here for at least a week and I SO want to know lol
Thx! ☺️

Debra

I just received my April box and am missing the Elemis cleanser that I chose and received the same pair of eyelashes that I will never use for the third time. I think I am finished with Boxy. So disappointed.

Nicole

I’m dissatisfied too nothing I wanted😞 in my premium box!!

Like my box this month very much. No eye shadow palette! Yay! Somehow, I avoided getting an eyeshadow palette in both my base box and Premium box. 🙂 My box included:

Elemis Super Food Cica Calm Hydration Juice
Benefit original PoreFessional primer
Makeup Eraser Original
Iconic London Illuminator in Original (won’t be using, probably, since it’s dark for me)
Lavish 5-piece eye brush collection (won’t be using)

Laura

Do you happen to recall the weight/dimensions on your variation?
Thx! ☺️

Womp womp. Subbed in late March for the Saturday Skin GWP, so didn’t get to pick an April item (would have picked Zoeva palette).

I got the worst possible variant for me. Variant #6, 1.1 lbs:
– Elemis cleanser (would’ve preferred serum)
– Porefessional (would’ve gone up for swap no matter which primer I got; I think the hydrate one will be easier to swap)
– Eye brush set (no-name brand with inflated RV)
– Hank & Henry sponge duo (just got the Luxie sponge set in I think January & I don’t use sponges at all)
– Eyeliner duo (private label item that’s probably worth a couple bucks)

Would not have willingly paid $25 for this, lol. The only real upshot is that at least I got a decent cleanser. I figured that I liked all the “hero item” spoilers (Elemis skincare + Zoeva palettes), so I thought I couldn’t lose. Apparently a good hero item might mean the rest of the box is junk, though. 😂

Amber

I got the same variant. The only thing I liked was the Elemis, everything else is super meh. I’d literally just bought a new beauty blender two weeks ago so I suppose it’s always good to have more backups. I’m sticking around to see what’s up for choice items and if they’re garbage, I’m cancelling completely.

Jen

haha. Love the NOPE. Try a darker lip liner with it. It may make it more wearable.

I started a new subscription using the VV code. When I got the confirmation I didn’t see it listed. Will I still get it? I’m a little nervous. I actually started a new account because even though I unsubscribed from the base and luxe in February, I still get premium which doesn’t count as unsubscribing I guess. Really hoping I get the palette though, I love the formula.

Reply ButtonReply

Ruth

Not a bad box, but I’m ok that I unsubscribed after March. The only thing I’d really want or use from April would be the Zoeva palette, so maybe I’ll just buy one. Several of those palettes looked very inviting to me.

Alice

After trying two, the Zoeva palettes are now my favorite shadow formula!

Reply ButtonReply

Marion

I don’t know what I’m getting yet, since I resubbed late with the Saturday Skin cream code & didn’t get to pick a product.

I’m really hoping for a Zoeva palette & a Dose of Colors lipstick!

Reply ButtonReply

Christa H.

I used the code for the Violet Voss palette, so I didn’t get to choose either…fingers crossed

Reply ButtonReply

Christa H.

Unfortunately I got an email from them….resubscribed on April 2nd. They charged me immediately, but I’ve yet to hear anything on the April box😳

Marie

It’s still early in the month.

I really hope I get that palette–such pretty colors in exactly my favorite shades! All the unboxing videos I’ve seen so far have the Caramel Melange palette which is yucky to me (lots of orange, yellow and coppers) and the same pale pink lipstick. Crossing fingers for everyone to get what they want! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Alice

I purchased the Caramel Melange in add ons. It’s gorgeous! Nothing orange or yucky about it!

Reply ButtonReply

Lori

Glad you like it, I couldn’t pull off those colors without looking sick.

Charlotte

Megan, I have coloring very similar to yours, and I too can absolutely not wear very light or pastel lip colors. In general I find that shades which are lighter than your natural lip color really wash out fairer skin tones.

Reply ButtonReply

MzBev

Has anyone heard when Boxy plans to implement the profiles better? I don’t follow them, like I used to. The only item I would have liked, in this variation, is the primer.
(never use sponges or lashes, which they have been sending out pretty often)

Rose

I get so many horrific colored lipsticks in sub boxes that I have taken to scraping off a little swatch so as to not compromise the lipstick. If the color sucks, I can then give the offending lip product away without worrying if I sterilized it properly. That also means that I can offload liquid lip products (that can’t be sterilized if you have used the applicator). I’m not sure why companies let their products be represented by the ugliest colors that they can’t sell…I can assure you that when I get a product that I can use, I go and buy more colors. Not so much with baby-poo-brown and calamine-lotion-pink, as I won’t even use it to see if it is the “perfect” formula.

I really can’t wait to get my base and premium boxes to brighten up my day. I felt a little guilty about them but then realized we haven’t spent any money going out to eat or making impulse buys in stores and I deserve it. Everyone needs some sunshine during these dark days.

Reply ButtonReply

Jennifer

Thanks for the review! I am REALLY hoping I don’t get the lashes or the sponges as I have received sponges within the past 2 months from them and I have those same lashes up for swap from a box I can’t remember.

Reply ButtonReply

Shay

For the lipstick, maybe you can try filling your lips with a nude lip liner then lightly dab the lipstick in the center of your bottom lip and kind of press your lips together. The lip liner MAY help adjust the color. Lip liner usually needs to be worn with those types of lip colors.

Reply ButtonReply

noo

I would also use this as a blush

Reply ButtonReply

Jacki

After seeing you in the lipstick, I scrolled down to see you in the lashes… waiting 😂 I have too many lippies to bother with making them work. I chose the serum, so I’m not expecting a palette. There are so many variations that I’ll be lucky to get something I can use. I’m excited to try the serum!

Reply ButtonReply

T.Marie

I look just like that in those type of colors too. You could mix it with a brown to make a rose but what I do? Get rid of them lol.
No tracking for base or premium yet!
