Hey guys, I just came across some information which was for me quite illuminating. I’m posting here because I found it after venturing into the rabbit-hole of skincare articles after initially searching for more information about the ingredients in the Erno Laszlo Hydraphel Skin Supplement (seems good). I generally love Ernow Laszlow products because I find them to be effective for me.

Topical Vitamin C can stain your skin, similar to a fake tan. Ascorbic acid eventually oxidizes to erythrulose. Erythrulose is an ingredient in fake tans which produces a Maillard reaction similar to that in cooking. Before you get alarmed, to my understanding, it’s harmless.

I had noticed that my face (in particular) hadn’t become as fair as it usually gets during this out of sun time of year. I even updated my beauty profile from fair to light when usually this time of year my face is very pale. I had observed but didn’t understand why my selection of very light colored foundation from beauty boxes was soooo too light. I had even been wondering if my vitamin supplements had something to do with it — astaxanthin, turmeric (maybe they do too, idk). Then I found this information and total light bulb, ding, ding, ding, winner, winner. Lol.

The article I read was by Lab Muffin from 2017, titled: WHY VITAMIN C CAN STAIN YOUR SKIN (AND HOW TO AVOID IT!). I just wanted to share in case you had experienced similar. Happy reading. 🙂
