Birchbox x Standard Dose: The CBD Kit Review

I've tried a few CBD (aka cannabidiol) items in my day via subscription boxes in the past but lately I've wanted to get to know more about this mystical and controversial ingredient. I found this article on Standard Dose's blog about common cannabinoids to be pretty helpful. I also wondered why CBD has become such a popular ingredient in beauty and personal care products.

From Standard Dose:

CBD has the potential to naturally aid in nervous system homeostasis, increase focus and clarity, reduce stress and anxiety, aid sleep, aid in weight loss, manage aches and pains from conditions like IBS and arthritis, and reduce inflammation.*

This Birchbox x Standard Dose kit includes really high-end brands that present CBD in an approachable and beautiful way which is right up my alley, so let's dive in!

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Everything comes in a resealable bag that has holographic sides. I've used this to tote and store things over at my boyfriend's house, so it's proved useful!

Saint Jane Luxury CBD Beauty Serum, 0.10 oz. - Estimated Value $12.50 (Buy a full-size 1 oz. for $125.00)

This beauty oil has a lovely botanical scent and absorbs quickly, leaving my skin visibly glowing. Adding CBD to a facial oil like this lends extra soothing and calming benefits to the rest of the powerhouse ingredients like sunflower oil, shea butter, sea buckthorn, rosehip, and grapeseed oil (among others). This product is extreme CBD luxury at its finest and I for one am on board after getting a look and feel of how this transforms my skin. I just wish I had more of it right now!

Hora Skin Care Overnight Exfoliating CBD Mask, 0.17 oz. - Estimated Value $5.27 (Buy a full-size 2 oz. for $62.00)

If you've read some of my other reviews, you may know how much I love an overnight mask. This little pot of rich cream contains vitamin A, evening primrose, MCT oil, borage oil, CBD, and salicylic acid which together chemically exfoliate and soothe my skin while I sleep. It immediately makes my skin feel luxuriously soft and moisturized, and it's fragrance-free so it's gentle for those who are SCENTsitive.

HATSHE CBD Tangerine Recovery Gel, 0.17 oz. - Estimated Value $3.23 (Buy a full-size 4 oz. for $76.00)

I was skeptical whether this relief gel would do anything, but my oh my it's glorious. I have pretty constant back and shoulder pain and this gel immediately started feeling tingly and numbed the area just enough. The tangerine scent is nice especially mixed with the cooling menthol. Along with full spectrum hemp oil, capsicum, camphor oil, and amica, this is a nice little relief for sore muscles.

Vertly CBD-Infused Lip Butter in Tinted Rose, 50 mg - FULL SIZE! Retail Value $24.00

Wow - this tinted balm from Vertly is quickly becoming a favorite! The tinted rose color has the perfect amount of beautiful red that gives my lips a kiss of color while delivering serious hydration. It has beautiful crisp packaging and smells amazing too! Ingredients included are an array of natural powerhouses like full spectrum CBD, shea butter, cacao butter, kokum butter, jojoba, apricot, coconut, and hempseed oil. This particular variant has 50 g of CBD in each tube which has serious anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties that sets it apart from your average balm.

The Good Patch Nite Nite, 1 patch - Retail Value $12.00

There is something I love about these patches that stick on your wrist and deliver various benefits topically. This particular one called Nite Nite contains 15 mg of premium hemp cannabidiol extract plus 3 g of melatonin that is supposed to usher me into a gentle sleep. I don't usually have a hard time sleeping unless I'm stressed out which is when I think these can help me. Although I was already pretty sleepy when I tried this single patch out, I didn't wake up during the night and felt well-rested when I woke up in the morning with no grogginess.

Dr. Kerklaan Therapeutics Natural CBD Skin Cream, 1 oz. - Retail Value $39.99

This has become my go-to skin cream in these especially clean times. I wash my hands so much more now than I ever did before which means my skin is feeling extra dry lately. This cream stays put by my bed so that I can use it in the evening after my bedtime routine or in the morning when I wake up. However, I've found myself reaching for it throughout the day since it softly restores moisture without feeling greasy at all. That means no smudges on my laptop keys while working from home. The 1-ounce tube contains 60 mg of USA grown hemp CBD, is fragrance-free, and is hypoallergenic as well.

Standard Dose Tincture Sample, 7.5 mL - Estimated Value $22.00 (Buy a full-size 30 mL for $88.00)

I think this tincture held the most mystery for me. I've always wanted to try CBD just as a general daily part of my wellness routine, but I'm never sure where to start. A CBD tincture like this aims to relieve stress, reduce inflammation, and soothe aches and pains. This vial contains 250 mg of hemp CBD isolate sourced from New York along with coconut-based MCT oil. Each dropper contains about 12 mg of CBD and it's suggested to take up to 2 droppers per day under the tongue. Although stated that it's tasteless and scentless, I do get a slight taste from the MCT that I actually find pleasant although hard to describe. I haven't been using this frequently enough to see a long term change (as to make it stretch) but I'll use just a dropper when the mood strikes me. I also think that the 12 mg dose may not be enough to relieve my back or knee pain, but I'll need to experiment more.

Prima Soak It In Bath Gem, 6 oz - FULL SIZE! Retail Value $16.00

This bath gem is one of the items I was most excited to try! Although I haven't been taking baths as much as I had been, this one prompted me to do a tub scrub down so I could enjoy soaking in the CBD-infused fizziness. Made up of key ingredients whole-plant hemp extract, Epsom salt, meadowfoam seed oil, eucalyptus, and lavender really made this a wonderful, soothing experience. The eucalyptus was one of the most forward scents I picked up on which felt clearing. I didn't expect this to be oily even though it has oil in the ingredients list, but after the bath, it ended up making my skin feel ultra soft and hydrated. I'm a big fan of this bath gem and think it really helped me relax.

Verdict: My experience with the Birchbox x Standard Dose: The CBD Kit has been fantastic. I feel like I learned more about CBD as a beauty ingredient and have a newfound appreciation for its various uses. The bath gem, lip tint, lotion, and relief gel were probably the items I liked the most, but the facial oil and overnight mask both felt ridiculously luxurious. I'm curious to try more of the tincture over time and it's piqued my interest to seek out more info about personal dosages for future use. The eight products in this kit have an estimated total retail value of $134.99 which is incredible for a $42 cost.

Thank you for your input, Jane. I felt like the review was a little *too* glowing and wondered if there wasn’t some element of being overly positive about it after she had just read about all the benefits of CBD on the site she referenced – like maybe it influenced her to be a little too excited about the products, so I’m glad to see your more balanced perspective.

BTW, I love my melatonin dreams, but I guess that’s just me. I’m always down for an interesting dream!

Just wanted to note the patch has 3 *mg* of melatonin, not 3 grams…

Thanks Marne. I ordered last night and it shipped today. Ordered it mainly for the man but I will take the lip balm(my favorite products like you). I can’t wait to see if it helps.

Got this kit but have tried it yet, but I previously purchased the previous CBD kit Birchbox had and then a full size Saint Jane.

I also take CBD capsules daily from Lazarus naturals. I had brain surgery for removal of a benign tumor and it helped me with the pre surgery anxiety, post surgery pain and my husband takes it daily to help with Parkinson’s symptoms. I take 50 mg at night to relax, 25 mg during the day if anxiety hits.

I bought this kit awhile back & wasn’t as happy about EVERY product as Marne. Just like ANY medicine (both RX & OTC) affects everyone differently, CBD isn’t a “cure all”. The patch was highly annoying & ineffective to me personally (But I also can’t take melatonin or I’ll see the weirdest dreams & wake up exhausted). But I absolutely agree with review of overnight mask – it has zero scent & did not bother my SCENTsitive nose at all!

Loved this kit! That sleep patch did serious wonders for my husband who has insomnia. He has tried melatonin by itself and CBD by itself and never had much luck, but something about the combo in patch form really helped him get to sleep. These patches are so expensive but we might have to invest in more so he can use them when he’s having a really tough night.
I’ve also been using CBD tinctures and capsules for a while to help with pain relief and inflammation, and I’ve really found them to be most effective with consistent use. Even when you’re not feeling pain, take a dose once or twice a day (depending on the concentration of the product you’re using), and long term it has really seemed to help me with chronic pain – I experience it much less often than before.

I am not subscribed to Birchbox, just because i don’t really care for skin care (only because i am on acne prescription and i have very sensitive skin) BUT, i do have to say i absolutely love them for their kits! I ordered the lip therapy kit, because i suffer with dry lips 24/7 no matter what i put on them. Let me just say all the lip items i got are absolutely amazing. I haven’t tried all of them yet, but out of the two i have, i apply some before bed and i actually woke up with hydrated lips! I wanted to scream with happiness lol. They are very hydrating without being sticky whatsoever. Best under $30 i have ever spent. Would highly recommend.

Agreed! Birchbox kits are an awesome alternative for paying every month if you’re not sure if you’d like the items. I’ve loved many of their kits too!

Joy-not the other one

I bought this kit yesterday! I literally bought it because I’ve been using that bath bomb like 2x week for the last month and Sephora is currently out of them and I’ve bought every one available on Mercari! Seriously that thing is amazing! I am a bath taker (everyday) and I always use a bomb, salt, foaming bath, etc (always something) and I have never used a bomb this good. LOVE ❤️

I am also extremely into CBD. I’ve been using it in different forms (tinctures, capsules, RSO, gummies, lotion, basically trying all forms to see what helps the most) for about five months now. I have now stopped taking my anti anxiety medication for the last 4 of those months. And my Dr. is now also weaning me off of my depression medicine as well. It was his idea. He said I’m getting all the benefit I need from the CBD.

Now I am in no way saying it’s a miracle for everyone or suggesting that it can replace other people’s much needed medication. I just wanted to share what it’s done for me. That’s all.

Thanks for reviewing this! It’s good to know the other products are awesome as well. Makes me feel better about paying $42 for the bath bomb!! 😉

I struggle with anxiety as well and would much rather take CBD instead of meds for anxiety and depression. Can you please tell me what has helped you the most (oil, capsules, gummies, etc.)? Thank you for your insight.

Joy-not the other one

Hello! After a few months of experimenting I have found that just as the commenter above mentioned, consistency is definitely key. I take a regular base dose of CBD every single day regardless of how I’m feeling. Just like I would a vitamin or my regular medication. Then if I am feeling more anxious, depressed, nervous, pain, etc. on any given day I take a supplemental dose as well.

I have found the most success with capsules. I take 2 every morning with my coffee. One is a 25 mg capsule that also has caffeine in it and the other is a 25 mg capsule that contains turmeric for joint support. Then after work I usually have either a dropper of tincture equal to about 20 mg of CBD. This is what I do every day.

There are days when I feel a little anxious or have more pain due to cramps or whatever. When those things strike I will take an extra dropper or two of the tincture because it works the quickest for me. This regimen has taken me off of all of my prescription anxiety medication and cut my depression medication in half and working towards eliminating.

As for cost, my husband is a veteran and I buy most of our stuff from Lazarus naturals online because if you provide them with a valid DD-214 showing that you are a veteran you receive a PERMANENT 60% discount on everything they sell. They also have a discount program for disabled people and low income families. Each requires a different form of proof but that is only required once. They offer free 3 day shipping as well.

When beginning this journey I tried several brands/companies and found almost all of them useful and many of them offer various discount programs. Hemp crate is another one with a veteran/disabled program. I was super surprised at how many companies offer a generous discount.

I will say that I learned that I need the Full Spectrum CBD to really feel my BEST.

I also get some of my products from subscription services! One of the capsules I currently take every day came from my Scentbird subscription!

Anyways, sorry to be so long winded. Hope this helps!!!!!

Lawden

I would also love to know the answer to your question as I’ve started having a lot more anxiety than normal ( wonder why😭) and would love to try something out but have no idea where to start!

I bought this box and have only tried a couple items but your review makes me want to buy a couple more. I’m really intrigued with the relief gel. I have serious neck/back pain and migraines so I’m hopeful it will help.

Oh, migraines are awful! I hope it helps you!
