A Curated Thrift January 2020 Review
As I mentioned before, this subscription is customized based on your size and preferences from a survey you fill out while signing up. It is incredibly detail-oriented and asks you everything from your fashion aesthetic, to style icons, to your measurements and size and fit preferences. This box is curated just for me, so everyone receives something different each month.
This month's box included a cute note detailing the items they hand-selected for me as well as info for an Instagram giveaway!
Retro '70s Style Poncho, size unavailable
I was confused when unboxing this item, thinking it was a caftan. Upon putting the piece on, I realized it is, in fact, more poncho-style due to the extremely high slits on the sides. This is rather lightweight and more ideal for summertime rather than our gloomy winter weather. I am not sure if the style of this piece spoke to me, nor did I like the color scheme. I was hoping to receive an actual vintage piece too; this seems more like a reproduction piece from what I can tell. Though this piece was not necessarily for me, this could be a fun piece to style. I paired it simply with a mini skirt and black open-toed heels. However, imagine how amazing this number would look styled with shorts, jeweled gladiator sandals, a large brimmed Stevie Nicks hat, and oversized sunglasses.
Groovy Lisa Frank Dream Dress, size unavailable
If you recall from my first review for A Curated Thrift, there were a few bumps in the road. The first box I received had my dream dress, but it was too small for me. The second box they issued me included a dress as well as a sweater vest to make up for issues with the first box. A Curated Thrift has been nothing but accommodating with their customer service and included this piece as well for previous issues mentioned.
When I initially saw this dress, all I could think of was my Lisa Frank sticker collection from the late '80s early '90s I so carefully curated as a little girl. The vibrant colors as well as the flower power and peace sign designs on this dress are so reminiscent of Lisa Frank's style! I was eager to try this dress on, but sadly this dress does not fit me either. I was able to get it on, but not over my ample chest. What a bummer! If this dress had fit, I can imagine wearing it in warmer weather with my jelly-style sandals, oversized red heart sunglasses, and big neon laser cut acrylic earrings for an effortlessly whimsical summertime ensemble!
Verdict: I hate to say it, but it was a rough go with A Curated Thrift. Certainly, their customer support is top-notch-- they are tremendously accommodating and kind. Every step of the way, they would replace items for one's with fit issue and send extra pieces for the inconvenience. I have worked in the customer service industry in different forms for the last twenty-two years, so I can recognize great customer service when it is provided. However, the frustrating element was the plus size pieces provided. Shopping as a larger lady can be difficult, especially when thrifting and particularly if you are seeking genuine vintage. It is truly like finding a needle in a haystack--any plus size babe knows that woe all too well if they are also a vintage fanatic! I have reviewed other plus size vintage boxes in the past and those seemed to have wider selections that fit my size 20/22 body as well as my tastes and style, though. I was hoping to receive something that was not a muumuu style dress-- that is not to say I don't appreciate caftans and ponchos. I just was hoping to find a stellar mini '60s mini dress or even a velvet '90s dress. Something that was more my aesthetic, but also fit me well.
As for the value of the box, I would say for the price, if you are a thrift fiend such as myself and get a kick out of scouring the bins for killer vintage and bargains galore... this one possibly is not worth it for you. For someone that loves vintage pieces, but isn't able to hit up estate sales, flea markets, and thrift stores, this may be a worthwhile alternative. Plus, the team at A Curated Thrift will work with you if you don't find what they send appealing-- they will send you a replacement piece. I cannot praise them enough on how wonderful their service is in that regard!
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, A Curated Thrift sends customized and personalized boxes just for you. What you receive will be different than what I did since these pieces are all vintage and one of a kind items.
Value Breakdown: My Vintage Box was $34.95 for one unique, vintage piece. The subscription auto-renews each month.
