The Box By Fashionsta January 2020 Review

The Box By Fashionsta comes with a simple info card that gives a short description of each included product with their retail value. The other side of the card welcomes us into a new decade and explains how they are working hard to speed up fulfillment timing to get boxes to us faster.

CLE Multi Cream, 2.20 oz. - Retail Value $32.00

I love the smell of this moisturizer! It's a thick cream that includes palo santo essential oil which gives it such a wonderful scent. This item is called multi-use since it says you can use it on your face, body, and even your hair. I always question a heavy cream like this on my face unless it's a night mask so I'll probably mostly be using this on my body and hands. I just love the packaging and box as well. This item is a solid win for me!

IBY Beauty City Limits Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $20.00

As soon as I swatched this palette, I was impressed with the pigment. There are some great neutral base colors here as well as a few more adventurous shades in a mix of mattes and metallics. There are 12 shadows in all that range from pale pinks to dark evergreen and navy colors for more dramatic looks. I vaguely remembering seeing IBY around some beauty boxes in the past but don't think I've ever received anything from them personally. I'm actually shocked that this only retails for $20 because it seems like a really nice palette and the colors are right up my alley! I'll be looking forward to playing with the darker shades in the future.

Here is a tame everyday look I made with the palette (along with everything else in the box). I used "Road Trip" as a base, along with "Silent Disco", "Playlist", and "Nightfall" as a highlight to finish it off. While I still have to work on my blending, I really liked the look that this palette helped me create. I always use a primer and a finishing spray for my makeup and those both helped keep this pigment poppin'.

Bang Beauty Lip Crayon in 'Kiss Me' - Retail Value $18.00

I love chubby lip crayons and really liked this soft pink color in the tube which got me excited. Bang Beauty is a brand I've come in contact with before in other beauty subs along the way. Once I got this color on though, it seemed a little too "'80s" for me. It doesn't look too bad in the photos (above), but IRL I thought it was a little too frosted looking. The crayon glided on effortlessly and I was stoked on how creamy it felt on my lips. If this were a more neutral OR darker pigmented color, I'd probably love it. This hue just wasn't my fave.

Luna by Luna Sapphire Lip Oil - Retail Value $18.00

I'm familiar with Luna by Luna already and honestly was obsessed with their powder crescent highlighter for a while. They have a few different lip oils and I am pleased as pie that I received the blue sapphire version. It goes on clear and gives my lips a nice gloss that isn't too sticky and feels really hydrating. Winter is the perfect time to keep a lip oil treatment like this hand and this one is just perfect. I like to use this while I'm prepping the rest of my face and then I remove it right before adding my lipstick to soften up my lips. It can also be used over a matte lip to make it shine.

Girlactik Precise Marker Liner in Black - Retail Value $20.00

Here's another brand that I've seen a decent bit in subscription boxes over the years though I've never gotten their liquid liner. I'd easily compare this to Kat Von D's liquid liner which was a go-to for me when I rocked liner more. The black pigment is really dark and this stayed put on my lids all night, over my eyeshadow look. The tip was nice 'n' wet and didn't crap out on me or create weird lines in the color. Well done!

Luci Metalist 4-in-1 Radiant Face Gel in Silver, 0.5 oz. - Retail Value $14.50

Out of the four uses this product has, I think I like "highlighter" the least, which is the first thing I used it for. Seeing the spoilers for this product, I got excited because I generally like masks and treatments. As a highlighter though, this is a no-go. It stayed very gel-like on my face and didn't jive with the rest of my makeup. However, as oil-based skincare, I think this is a fun product! I received the silver version (other variations included gold and bronze) and I'm not sure if they all smell the same, but I like this one! It's sort of fruity and sweet. The key ingredient is moringa oil and it can be used as a sleeping mask, a 20-minute treatment, or a moisturizer. It is QUITE oily though, so this is definitely for those with normal to dry skin. Once my skin has soaked up as much as it can handle, it's left feeling really moisturized, soft, and smelling nice.

Here are hand swatches for the lip crayon, liner, and face gel.

Caolion Pore Blackhead Steam Pack & Pore Original Pack Duo - Retail Value $13.89

Here's another multi-use skincare product. This one comes as a duo-pack so it includes two products for tackling skin problems. The first is a "steaming mask" that gets a little warm when in use that is supposed to open pores to get a deep cleanse. It didn't get as hot as some other products I've used and I found it to be pretty pleasant. I rinsed it with cold water, as directed. The second step is in the bottom portion of the double-decker jar and is a heavy clay mask. It was actually so thick that I found it hard to spread on my face. I managed to get a layer on even though it wasn't as even as I would've liked. This one is cooling and was super apparent while on. Very minty! After 10 minutes, I removed it with a warm washcloth to reveal tightened pores. This treatment was nice, but to be honest, it wasn't my favorite in comparison to some others I've used.

Verdict: My second delivery from The Box By Fashionsta was a success! I didn't fall in love with every single product, but I felt they curated a great mix of skincare and makeup and selected items that have a great quality even though the brands may not be big enough to be found at Sephora. The palette really impressed me as did the cream, eyeliner, and lip oil. The pore pack duo, face gel, and lip crayon weren't bad, just not for me. I think this is a solid box for $24.99 since it has a total retail value of $136.39. I will also note that I received my replacement quad palette from last month in this box as well, so I'm pleased with their customer service!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Your box will ship within 1-3 weeks from the payment processing date, so you'll likely start with the February box. It's best to reach out to customer service and ask!

Value Breakdown: At $24.99 for the box, here's what you are paying per item:

  • Cream: $5.86
  • Palette: $3.66
  • Lip Crayon: $3.30
  • Lip Oil: $3.30
  • Eyeliner: $3.66
  • Face Gel: $2.66
  • Pore Pack Duo: $2.54

Alternately, you're paying $3.57 per item, on average.

Hi Marne, thank you for the great review. Is there a possibility of MSA ordering a couple of the mystery boxes (at different times) to give us an idea of whether they are possibly worth getting, please?

Thanks for the great suggestion, Mimosa. I’ll see what we can do!

I love this box and this month has been extraordinary! Where else do you find a subscription where the CEO asks the FB group what they like, don’t like or would want to see in a future box? New brands and new loves because it’s different. Most members are raiding their men’s box before the men get to it haha and the men are giving good reviews as well. With the cold pack, try putting a few drops of water on your fingers to spread. If I remember correctly it has a clay base so a little moisture helps to loosen it up 🙂

Thank you for the tip, Marcia! I’ll have to try that.

My favorite products from this box are the duo face mask and the Metalit face gel! I got the gold variation. I have oily, sensitive skin and these worked great for me. Oil based moisturizers work better for my skin though. I thought the lip crayon was a bit too pink as well, but it looks nice with a thin layer as a subtle color.

What a pretty look! I actually love the lip color on you, but I’m from the eighties after all, lol. Love the IBY eyeshadow as well. I have one pallet by them and really would love to try that one. Thanks so much for the review! This looks like a great box!

I’ve been getting this box for about six months- I am always happy with the products they curate. Highly recommend!

SquirrelyGirl

I’ve been getting this box for about 6 months and I really enjoy it. I thought this month was really great, even though it has a palette I already own in it. Gift time!

Things I like:
Customer service (seriously, they care about you as a subscriber) and they are super interactive with us.
They donate to a battered women’s shelter
Indie brands. I think some of the best products come from brands that are up and coming
I’ve only received cruelty free products
You get a wide variety of items- skin, hair, body, makeup- you get it all.

Things they need to work on:
Shipping times. They are short staffed and the past few months they have had a harder time getting boxes to us by the 3rd week. Although, last month it was a supplier issue so it wasn’t really their fault.
I think they need to close the wait list until they can catch up. They let a lot of new subscribers off the list in the past couple of months and because they are short staffed, there have been growing pains.

Things to consider before signing up:
If you want mainstream brands, all/mostly makeup or prefer your box at the beginning of the month, this sub isn’t for you. You just won’t be happy with it.

I think this box has a lot of good things going for it and I am looking forward to seeing how it grows in the future!

me again..i joined this month does anyone know what will be in February box? thanks

SquirrelyGirl

Spoilers usually come later in the month. Their boxes are a little different, where they don’t start shipping until mid month. You should expect your box to arrive near the end of the month. Some people really don’t like this, but I don’t mind since it’s a nice surprise to get during the end of the month “lull”

Marne…do you know if I just joined will I get January or February box? and thanks again..

Alice

I was introduced to IBY shadows by Ipsy with singles. In fact, several shades in this palette I have through Ipsy! I, too, was impressed with the richness and staying power of the pigments.

Marne, thanks again for starting to review this box.
The lip color does look a little feisty, but I have used the lip oil and don’t wipe it off. I layered the color, very thin and blotted with my finger. I tend to do this no matter what lippie I’m using, because I love the sheer look. Try it again and tell me your thoughts. I really like the lip formula.
Also the hand cream is to die for! I cannot stand the scent, it smells like licorice to me, but my cracks and dry skin cleared up overnight. I’m using it specifically for my hands, but I might protect my crepe skin under eye before I go outside into the 10 degree weather.
Awesome review!

I really like this box because I get things I don’t already have. I buy a lot of palettes, and only once or twice did I get one I have.

That said, the palette didn’t do it for me. I created beautiful looks, but when I looked in the mirror around lunchtime, the shades had all blended into that browny burgundy that happens so often with certain formulae. Colors don’t stay distinct.

And the silver gel stuff…it actually works pretty well under powder highlight. I always have a hard time getting intensity and wear from highlights, but a cream, liquid, or gel highlight and then a powder seems to be the thing for me.

You can have my spot. This was my second box and I’m canceling. Love the IBY palette, though – these colors are gorgeous! The Cle moisturizer smelled like fennel to me – yuckety yuck!!!! I thought I’d use it up by putting it on my lower legs, but I could still smell it from there. Gag. Into the trash it went.

I got the bronze Luci product and it’s too thick and gritty for any use. The Caolion is too thick and meh, like Marne said, and the Bang Beauty lip crayon was a great color if you’re a cadaver.

This may be a little too bold, but Marne, can we see a few reviews with your natural eye color? I’ve also got brown eyes and would like to see what the shadows would look like on eyes that are in the brown family.

i think her natural eye color is blue.

What a strange comment to assume someone’s eyes are a completely different shade. She does have extraordinarily lovely eyes though!! Rock those baby blues!

Marne Orenich

Hi Ami!
That is my natural eye color, so sadly I cannot change them. I do wear contacts which might be what you are seeing in my eye, but they are only tinted a very slight blue so I can find them if they fall into the sink. They don’t alter my color and my eyes are the same without them.

This was my second box with them as well. Although I don’t “need” it due to getting Boxy, Ipsy, and Petit Vour, I really like that the items are different brands I wouldn’t get in other boxes. Plus being grandfathered into the older price makes me feel like I’m getting a better deal.

I watch a lot of YouTube unboxing videos (we all have a thing-don’t judge me)and I have always considered this box inferior and the products not great. I don’t know what it is about a written review opposed to video but this box looks nice! Or maybe the box has just gotten better? Either way I love this month’s box and I am going to order it.

I recently discovered my holy grail foundation makeup and it is from CLE so I would love to try their cream. I didn’t even realize they made one. I also love lip oil and that palette is GORGEOUS! I have been wanting those exact colors.

Thanks for the review! 🙂

OMG tell me more about CLE! Being from Cleveland, I am kind of tickled by the name for that reason as well…

😊I don’t know much about them but I am nuts about only wearing foundation that has adequate SPF so I don’t have to do foundation and sunscreen separately. As I’m sure you know through your job at MSA and now your esthetics classes, it is not always possible to find a product that does both well. I subscribe to Scentbird with the three a month plan and they recently introduced several CLE makeup items. I got the foundation last month (with SPF 50!) and it is AMAZING! It comes in a large round white compact type style packaging and has a velour puff to apply. It is basically a sponge inside the compact that you press down on with the puff and the liquid/powder hybrid formula comes out. I adore the puff it comes with, but I received an IT face brush for Christmas (thanks Nana!) and I’ve been using it to apply. It goes on easily, offers great coverage and protection, matches my skin, and doesn’t leave that weird talc-like tight feeling that most tinted sunscreens gives me. I’m in love! I’m getting another one this month in my shipment. I’m going to cry when it’s not available from Scentbird anymore because due to my 3 a month subscription, even with the $5 premium up charge this product carries, I only pay $16.33 for it. It’s around $40 full price I believe. 😬 Totally worth it though! I’m still using my first one and I use it everyday so it really lasts too. The little puff makes it so easy to reapply through out the day (as I know you are aware you should with sunscreen) and the formula is so lightweight you truly can reapply it without worrying about looking like you have makeup caked on. Even though it’s buildable in this way, it still offers great coverage even with just one application. I’m telling you it’s an amazing product! Exactly what I’ve been looking for.

Scentbird also offers some other makeup products from CLE I plan on adding to my queue to try, but they don’t have any skincare available so I didn’t realize they offered it. Hope I can get this box!!!

This was my second box, and I liked this one more. Please keep reviewing!
