Skylar February 2020 perfume subscription review

Skylar Scent Club
4.2 overall rating
5 Ratings | 1 Reviews

Skylar Scent Club is a monthly perfume subscription that includes one limited-edition clean, hypoallergenic, and cruelty-free scent.

The founder, Cat, became especially conscious of product ingredients while working for The Honest Company and quickly realized she couldn't find a truly clean perfume she enjoyed. She also realized tons of other perfume lovers were looking for the same thing, so Skylar was born!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

About this Clean Perfume Subscription

The Subscription Box: Skylar Scent Club

The Cost: $20 a month + free US shipping

The Products: A limited-edition 10 ml perfume in a rollerball. All scents are clean, hypoallergenic, and cruelty-free!

Ships to: The US for free, Canada, United Kingdom, France, and Australia for $20

Good to Know: A portion of this month's Skylar sales goes to support International Justice Mission.

February 2020 Skylar Scent of the Month: Sweet Incense

A note on packaging: Skylar has mixed it up!

No more little book boxes, but the trade-off is that this new packaging uses 72% less packaging, which translates to around 20,000 pounds less packaging waste in 2020. I will miss the books, but this is something I can absolutely support and get behind. It also feels so utterly on-brand for Skylar.

Each month Skylar selects a charity to donate a portion of their Scent Club proceeds. This month it is International Justice Mission:

IJM works to combat sex trafficking, child sexual assault, cybersex trafficking, forced labor slavery, property grabbing, and police abuse of power, and addresses citizenship rights of minorities.

It's worth noting that Skylar scents are hypoallergenic, phthalate-free, paraben-free, and cruelty-free. They are also made in the US (in Los Angeles, to be exact!) and have no synthetic dyes. If you are someone who is super ingredient-conscious and wants more info, check out the Skylar Dirty List and their perfume philosophy.

Let's check out this month's scent!

Sweet Incense, 10 ml - Retail Value $29.00 ($20.00 for club members)

Scent Notes: Juniper Berry, Incense, Vanilla Orchid

"Nestled in blankets, she breathed a sigh of relief. The perfect night in."

I love incense fragrances, so I was expecting to enjoy this one. I am happy to report that it does indeed have a smokey burnt incense feel, but that there is also the sweetness of vanilla to make it a little more feminine. The juniper is also there along the edges, adding just the right amount of herbaceous frosted green to this composition. It certainly feels like a cozy cold weather scent and does remind me very much of the smell my living room had when the Christmas tree was still up and I light incense and candles at night. Let's just say I go through A LOT of incense.

This is not what I would consider a mainstream sort of scent, but those are the ones I tend to get most excited about. It reminds me a little of Kayali Vanilla 28, but with the addition of complex notes of burnt woods and the cold frost of juniper. I really like how it warms up on my skin and how interesting the overall effect is.

Skylar perfumes usually feel lighter than so many others due to the natural and clean ingredients used to make them. This one has good staying power and decent sillage on my skin. It lasted for about 4 hours before I started missing it. This could be totally different for you, as skin chemistry plays a huge role in these factors.

Verdict: Skylar seems to always send a scent that feels very unique and just slightly odd in the best way. I never worry about anyone else I know wearing the same thing as me when I have on one of these perfumes and I get many curious compliments. This month was exactly my sort of fragrance: moody, filled with woods and smoke, and just a little sexy thanks to that vanilla!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I love Skylar. Just re subscribed. They have improved their subscription service so there are lots more substitution choices. It is very easy to replace or skip a month. I like the new packaging as well. It is fantastic quality and a low cost for clean scents that are nice on my sensitive skin. Makes me happy amd excited each month. Definitely recommend.

This was my first box, so the change in packaging wasn’t an issue – I found it satisfying and giftable. I was excited about the incense – my current favorite, from Immortal Perfumes, has some lovely smokey notes – but in this one, the vanilla note is strongest on me. It’s funny, how scents wear differently depending on body chemistry. Not for me, but I’ll see if any friends would like it.

Just subscribed based on this review. I should have taken into account that Megan and I have different scent preferences, though. Oh well, it definitely sounds like something I will like, and if not, I can swap it or give it away.

Oh now I am even more curious as to what you will think! Keep me updated!

If you don’t like it, you can get a free return label from them and either get refunded or swap out for any other scent they have available. Sometimes they have a few previous months scent clubs scents available or any of their core fragrances, my favorite is Capri.

Thank you for the information! That’s great to know! I just ordered a lotion in the Capri scent from Ipsy not even realizing it was Skylar brand. Kind of a funny coincidence or something like that.

Great review, Megan. I liked the scent this month, it was one of my favorites so far. Just curious, did you get the January scent “Fresh Vibes”? I didn’t see it reviewed yet.

Hey Kelly! Sadly my January didn’t manage to show up. Did you get it? Tell me what you thought if you can. <3

I’ve been really enjoying Fresh Vibes, I think it’s a very citrusy scent, but the ginger and sandalwood add some uniqueness so it’s not boring. It’s so uplifting and bright, it makes me feel happy!😀

I had to send it back. It reminded me of my teenage years. Bad decisions and acne. No Bueono. I do love other scents from them.

Can’t help but realize how similar this is to my 40s…dealing with other people’s bad decisions and still acne. 🙂 LOL.

Kayali Vanilla is my all time favorite perfume, but I didn’t like this one from Skylar at all. The incense scent is just so overwhelming for me. This is the first Skylar scent I’ve really disliked. I know the new package is better for the environment, but man, I miss the book. I’d just as soon get a bubble mailer and do without a box at all now. Sigh. Maybe it’s just me. Just not feeling it this month. I think they have free returns so I might have to send this one back.

I hate to say it but I hate that they changed their packaging. I loved the hard little book box as it made everything seem so luxurious and special. Now it just seems like an overpriced roller that I can get at any Sephora. TBH I think there is more to the decision like pricing but nonetheless I canceled my sub as it seems to overpriced now.

This was honestly my favorite scent thus far! It’s just delicious !!

This is really strong. The incense is all I smell. It’s not bad, but not an everyday scent. I cancelled after this month. I’d rather save $20 a month and get a huge bottle of Flower Bomb.

I’m back on the Skylar train 🙂 I signed up for a 3-month sub, and hope to at least stick around for another 3 months because I really do love their scents. I also love the smell of incense (but not so much sweet scents), and I loved the combo of mixing the two together. I would never have thought they’d play so well together. 🙂
