California Found January 2020 Review

Instead of a booklet or pamphlet, California Found sends individual info cards featuring each item and giving some deets about the people and brands behind the products.

Get Naked Herbal Face Steam and Clay Mask Duo – Listed Value $21.00

I love getting super clean skincare items like this! This pair includes a pouch of soft brown colored clay for adding to water and making a natural face mask. The facial steam feels like a decadent spring dream and is bursting with dried dandelion root, calendula, lavender, chamomile, and peppermint. Yeah, it smells just as amazing as you would expect! I enjoyed it on the couch with the warm bowl in my lap and a towel over my head to catch the steam. The clay mask works to purify your pores and the turmeric inside calms your skin with its anti-inflammatory properties. Though I am hesitant to use clay on my entire (dry) face, I love it on my T-zone where my pores are larger and I actually have some oil production.

100 Graces Amber Necklace – Retail $32.00

I have always liked amber because it comes in so many different tones and is sometimes clear, sometimes solid. There is just a lot of variety within this resin, and I love that. It is also said to help calm nerves and promote healing. Even if you don’t buy into the metaphysical properties of stones, this necklace is a gorgeous little piece for your wardrobe. Seven little amber nugget beads are strung together on a wire that dangles from a delicate silvertone chain. This is very pretty and easy to wear!

Very cute and dainty.

Missive Press I (Heart Emoji) You Card – Retail Value $5.o0

Missive Press Hugs and Kisses Valentine – Retail Value $5.o0

Missive Press You Make Life Sweeter – Retail Value $5.o0

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it is a great time to send a little snail mail love, even if you aren’t into the mushy gushy stuff of the season. This trio of letterpress cards are minimal and tactile in the best way, and would be appropriate to send to anyone who holds a special place in your heart. I especially love the ‘You Make Life Sweeter’ sentiment because I tend to say this saying a lot to my loved ones.

SoulSpark A Spark of Prosperity Candle, 8 oz – Retail Value $21.99

All of you know I love a good candle and this one is certainly GREAT! It is a larger 8 oz size and smells of heavenly green tea with some sweetness in there too. At the bottom of this soy/coconut wax blend candle waits a healing stone charm for me to collect once I have burned it down far enough. I love when there is a surprise waiting for me at the end of a candle and I can’t wait to see it! The scent is moderately strong, filling my medium-size office easily.

Nora’s Food Co. Original Grain Free Granola, 6 oz – Retail Value $9.99

Is it even a California Found box without some amazing and delicious treat? This month we have some truly tasty granola that is grain-free and paleo! No grains, no wheat, no soy, no dairy, and no GMOs made it inside this bag, which is quite a feat. There are eggs in this mix though, so heads-up vegan friends! You can certainly enjoy this granola straight out of the bag, but I added in some almond milk and had it cereal-style at my desk one morning. YUM. The shredded coconut replaced the normal oats really well and I almost liked this even more!

The Verdict: California Found is such a unique box and I truly look forward to it each month. It is just such a great delivery of quality items from real small businesses and people who take joy in what they create. The contents of this box felt very much like a “treat yourself” sort of vibe, which is totally perfect for this time of year. I loved both the mask and steam, and when I used these with the dreamy candle, it felt very “spa-like” in my bathroom for sure. The delicate necklace is very pretty and I think a lot of people will really like it. The granola was delish, and the cards will all give my loved ones an extra helping of love just in time for 2/14. I really enjoyed this box.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

  1. $55 or so for this? Some questionable looking granola and a weed mix to steam your face with (not to mention all skin types can’t even use that or the clay mask)? Let’s not forget the souvenir shop trinket necklace, a candle that smells like grass, and some dollar store note cards? Ehh no thanks…I’ll stay Florida Found 🙂

    • Thanks for the feedback! You should start a Florida box! 🙂

  2. Now why did I click on this? Because now I NEED this subscription! I loved your review and that necklace is gorgeous on you!

    • I LOVE that necklace!! Every one is hand made and unique. I can’t believe we still have a few left! We are already down to our last 12 Feb boxes too. This month has been bananas!!

  3. This is my favorite sub box. I love the curation and supporting small businesses. After receiving a gorgeous leather wallet from Midi Queen a couple months back, I used a discount code to purchase a beautiful leather handbag from their website. This box is a great way to discover new treasures. I already have my eye on a couple of favorites from this box and always look forward to reading the artisan story emails.

    • Penny thank you!! We love to hear that you’ve rebought from our community of makers! Supporting small biz is the best!! 🧡

  4. Really liked the curation of this box. I’ve gotten several compliments on the necklace. The granola was a lot better than I thought it would be! We finished the chunks, and all the loose bits are going into oatmeal.

The candle smells a bit men’s sporty deodorant to me, though. Haven’t burned it yet.

    • Thanks Beth! (great name btw!)

Mixing the granola into oatmeal is fantastic – yogurt too if you’re into it. Men’s sporty deods…hmmmm….lol!! I get more cut grass and green tea, but I understand where the fresh, green fragrance may remind you of a clean smelling man!

So grateful for all you guys and your feedback! Love it!

      • Best name ever, lol. I hadn’t thought of yogurt, a great idea. I don’t buy as much yogurt in the winter months.

I am not good with discerning scents, so I could be way off on the candle.

      • I wonder if you could bake it into oatmeal cookies???

  5. I LOVE this box. So original, and I love that it supports indie craftspeople. What I don’t love is the price to Canada – the exchange and shipping are really just out of the question. But it’s a super lovely box, compared to so many of the others with their lousy cheap jewelry with ridiculous claimed RV and bargain-bin makeup. I always look forward to the reviews of this box.

    • Hi Sandy! Thanks for the kind words! Yes, shipping outside the US is quite something. We use the least expensive method available but yes, I totally understand your point. Thanks for taking the time to write in and compliment the box!

  6. This box is still available on their website as a one-time purchase for $55, I got an email and checked.

    • AND it ships FREE with the code on our website!
