Birchbox 'Routine Boosters' Curated Box #4 Review - January 2020

This month's Birchbox came with a single info card that lists the products on the front, with a Birchbox Tip listed on the back.

Daily Concepts Multi-Functional Mother of Pearl Soap Sponge - Retail Value $8.00

This was a repeat item for me from September, but I really enjoyed it last time, so I am fine with that, especially since mine had to be tossed a few months ago. It is a smaller sponge filled with a pearly soap that feels great on my skin. It can be used on either face or body. Because this is on the smaller side, I tend to reserve it for my neck and arms. It suds up nicely and has a beautiful scent.

TLW Let’s Get Naked Frizz Fighter, 20 ml - Estimated Value $3.20 (Buy a full-size 125 ml for $20.00)

All of you know how I plan on using this: on dry hair! It is recommended for damp hair before blow-drying, but since when have I followed directions? I love that this fights frizz and also has UVA protectant sunscreen, but there is something about the scent I really don't like. I can't decide if it smells like salon shampoo or frosting.

Lipstick Queen Shade Shifter in 'Old Flame', 3.5 g - Full Size! Retail Value $25.00

Yesssss!!! I absolutely adore Lipstick Queen and their shade shifting line is my favorite. Basically, the lipstick is some off the wall color but when it reacts with your body chemistry it changes to a custom shade. This one turns into a cheery pink with one swipe, but if I applied more and more it turned into a hot coral. It looks very much like a stain on my lips but is balmy enough to be hydrating. LOVE.

Here it is after about a minute. If you keep applying more and more though, it turns your lips into a hot coral shade!

Grande Cosmetics GrandePRIMER - Buy a full-size 0.3 oz for $25.00

I wish I knew how to estimate the value here, but (like many Grande Cosmetic samples) there is no indication of what size this is. I tried this before in another box and found I wasn't in love with it, and this feeling continued this time around. I don't think it necessarily is the product itself, but rather my lashes just don't work well with primers. I always feel like they just get clumpy and the white color of the primer itself is hard to bury under actual mascara.

Acure Seriously Soothing Under Eye Hydrogels - Retail Value $5.99

I have yet to meet an under-eye hydrogel I don't like and these are no exception. My dry eye skin just needs an extra boost, especially in the winter. I like to pop eye gels like this in the fridge for 30 minutes, fire up Netflix, and relax. The delicate area under my eyes always looks brighter and healthier after!

Verdict: I think this was a pretty solid Birchbox. The majority of my love is directed to that amazing lipstick, but the eye gels and soap sponge were winners too. I was less enthused by the hair frizz cream and the lash primer, but there was more than enough in here to make me happy. The value lands around $42.19 even without that primer value, so that is a good value for a $15 box.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Great review as always! I got this box and the lipstick becomes coral red on me as well, so I have to be careful how much to apply. But I like how moisturizing it is and the color are long lasting.

Megan, I use mascara primer daily and I find that the spiky plastic wands have a harder time layering over. The only exception for me is Thrive mascara. Ty for the always wonderful reviews. Have a wonderful day

The Lipstick Queen Shade Shifters definitely have a staining effect! After wearing & re-applying all day, you can end up with a look that’s bolder than you anticipated!

Omg…. I thought “Shifters” said something else then saw you said it had a “staining effect”, and I was like, “what!? no, that can’t be right. I gotta read that again”. lol! 😀

I agree with your review! That Grande lash primer? It’s not you, Megan, it’s them. The $7 lash primer by L’Oreal is the best I’ve ever tried (sorry, Manna). This Grande one felt like cement and ended up in the trash.

I thought the frizz thingy smelled like fruit. I actually didn’t hate it, and I’m a thick-haired person who uses as few hair products as possible. I like the smell much better than the smell of the Briogeo equivalents.

I totally agree about the lash primer! I’m a huge mascara addict (I never mind when I get yet another mascara in my boxes), and I’m just as big of a mascara primer addict, and hands down that L’Oréal primer is my most favorite primer too. 🙂 I actually think it’s extremely comparable to Clinique’s Lash Building Primer (my original HG primer), but since it’s cheaper it’s the automatic winner for me. 🙂
