Birchbox 2 Holiday Favorites beauty subscription box review

Birchbox
3.7 overall rating
657 Ratings | 188 Reviews

Every month, Birchbox sends samples (and sometimes full-sizes) of new and exciting beauty products from top brands for $15/month. They allow subscribers to pick between a curated box (all samples revealed) or a single sample choice with the rest of the items arriving as a surprise. Birchbox is one of the original beauty subscription boxes and is a great way to discover new makeup, hair care, and skincare products without breaking the bank.

This review is of the 'Holiday Favorites' curated box. It looks like previously in our spoiler post, Birchbox called this the "Golden Glow Box", but the info sheet inside states this box is "Holiday Favorites".

FYI - sign up to get email alerts for our Birchbox Spoilers to learn about Birchbox Sample Choice and Curated box options each month!

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Birchbox Curated Box #2 Review - December 2019

This is probably the prettiest Birchbox box I have ever seen. It is heavy-duty, and the inside of the lid even doubles as a picture frame. There are notches in the sides so it can stand up, doubling as a memory holder as well as a jewelry, trinket, or makeup box.

There are two info cards in this month's Birchbox. One details the included six items. The other card is a code for $25 off $100+ for subscribers to say "Happy Holidays."

Smith & Cult Nailed Lacquer in 'Shattered Souls' - Retail Value $18.00

I am always excited to get a Smith & Cult polish. In addition to the prettiest packaging out there, they also have major staying power. This is a clear base filled with different sizes of gold glitter and it is perfect for the holidays. One coat gets you loads of glitter payoff, but you can do multiple for total blinding coverage.

Sparkly and festive! This is just one coat.

Whal Myung WM5 Antioxidant Rejuvenating Serum, 0.17 fl oz - Estimated Value $8.16 (Buy a full-size 1 fl oz for $48.00)

I don't recall ever trying anything from this brand, which was exciting. As far as serums go, this one is over-the-top hydrating in a really great way. It is a little watery, meaning it shoots out of the nozzle rather aggressively, so beware. It feels quite nice on my face and absorbed quickly. Visually I didn't notice much of a change, but in terms of texture, my skin felt great. Supple even!

MAC Frost Lipstick in ‘Delish’, 3 g – Full Size! Estimated Value $18.50 (This item was a limited edition and is now discontinued)

I also received this lipstick from the Birchbox x MAC Kit and I loved it then too. I certainly don't mind having a backup. Unlike other metallic or frost lipsticks out there, this is so natural and more of a shimmer balm with a satin finish. No worries about revisiting the frosted '90s lipstick you stole from your mom's purse. I absolutely love this on my bare lips because it just gives them enough "extra" to look really great.

Here is a picture of me in this shade from my beloved Birchbox x MAC review!

Oribe Matte Waves Texture Lotion, 0.5 fl oz. - Estimated Value $6.18 (Buy the full-size 3.4 fl oz for $42.00)

Oribe products always smell so good! This cream is my sort of hair product because all you have to do is finger comb it through damp hair and let it air dry. It does a great job of defining natural waves and giving them even more texture. You can also use this on dry hair, which is my method of choice, especially after mine has been piled in a bun on top of my head all day and needs a little something to make it look like I care.

TOCCA Maya Eau de Parfum, 1.5 ml- Estimated Value $2.28 (Buy the full-size 50 ml for $76.00)

I love Tocca and I already own both Florence and Stella and wear them pretty regularly. This brand makes a really top-notch perfume, and the bottles are gorgeous, as well as being weirdly heavy, something I take great joy in. We all have our things I guess! Maya is another well done scent, filled with powder, berries, oakmoss, and flowers. The only element I don't like is those berries because they make the whole thing too sweet for me to invest in a whole bottle.

Beauty Protector Protect & Oil - Buy 4 oz for $28.00

Beauty Protector was a brand from my first Birchbox ever, in the first year they started as a subscription. The scent of any of their products feels like hopping into a sub box time machine! I was impressed with this brand back then, and I still like it. Relatively inexpensive compared to so many others, their formulas just work on my hair. This hair oil feels a lot like Biosilk Leave in Therapy in terms of that 'slippy' texture, but I find it to be lighter and give my hair more gloss.

Verdict: Birchbox had a value of at least $53.12 even without the hair oil which I couldn't estimate since I didn't know the size of the sample. This is one of the higher value Birchboxes I have received recently and I really liked the products inside too! It is always really nice to get full-size items in this sub, and this box had 2! If you selected this one for your curated choice this month I bet you will love it too, especially if you are looking for some glam additions to your New Year's looks.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? If you subscribe to Birchbox now, be sure to check the image on the sign-up page. The box design pictured at the bottom is the first month you'll receive. You can't pick a curated box like this one as your first box, but you'll be able to pick it every month moving forward.

Value Breakdown: At $15.00 for this box, each of the 6 items costs approximately $2.50.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I subscribed to birchbox as this was the box depicted on their website if you joined. It was also shown in my email confirmation however when I received my box they accidently sent me someone else’s including their packing slip. When I spoke to a rep regarding the issue and requested my correct box they said the picture shown was not what I would actually receive. I explained that is a deceptive practice and bait and switch. Should I keep the subscription or is the company known for doing this like this? I’ve very disappointed thus far

I was going to subscribe just to get that awesome box! They have moved on to January. 🙁

I have been wanting to try Smith & Cult for months now and this was such an awesome full size delight! The bottle is so beautiful and gold is my favorite color so there was no way I wasn’t going to be head over heels for this! Like the commenter above, I had quite the time getting this polish off but I also used like a million coats so I guess that is partly on me. Totally worth it because my nails looked like they were literally made of gold.

I enjoyed everything else in the box as well. I am literally wailing right now though because I totally forgot about my coupon that came in the box and I have placed SIX ORDERS with them since I received this box through the 70% off sale that is happening right now. I CANNOT BELIEVE I forgot to use my coupon! Oh well, maybe that’s a sign I missed something and need to shop again! Lol 😂

Hi Joy! I thought of you/your post here while stalking Birchbox’s site later today after looking at the box reviews I follow. Just on the very likely chance you have better things to do than memorize BB’s offerings, and seeing you enjoy Smith & Cult (not to mention savings!), I wanted to share this lovely tidbit of info:
https://www.birchbox.com/product/39919/bb-samplers-kits-makeup-nail-holiday-nail-kit-2019
This item is (as of today 01.08.2020) listed on the 20% off sale page. I hope this is helpful to you!

My box arrived smelly and soaked – “oh no! Something shattered!” It was the hair oil bottle, with a big hole in the bottom. Oil into everything. I emailed and had no response. After 5 days, I scheduled a phone call, and the nice lady arranged for a replacement box (I had only asked for one sample to be replaced, but they sent a duplicate box). So no harm done and I appreciated their willingness to replace.

My only disagreement with you is that when I put a bit of the Oribe in my damp hair, letting it air-dry, it was sticky and felt horrid. Considering Oribe prices, it’s probably a good thing that I don’t like their products! Briogeo loads up every sub box in North America every single year, so I’m good on hair products for a while (they are the Manna/Ofra of hair).

Hey Dea! Oribe is wildly expensive. I tend to like their stuff, but I prefer OUAI (of course, i say this all the time and I feel like some sort of cheerleader). Is your hair thicker or thinner? Mine is super dry, thick, and on the coarser side.

I had the same experience with my December box. The hair oil bottle was shattered. Everything was covered in glass and oil. I contacted Birchbox by email and they responded within a couple days stating they will send me a replacement box. They also stated those items may not be available. They sent an email when it shipped and it arrived in about a week. I received the holiday box with six completely different products. I have been with Birchbox for three years and the replacement products were not duplicates. Customer service did a good job resolving my issue. No complaints from me.

Ugh I wish Briogeo was the “Manna Kadar of sub boxes for hair products”! That would be amazing bc I adore all their products! I very rarely get anything from them ( I did get that deep conditioner of theirs twice but they have sooo much more I’ve been wanting to try!) so yeah, consider yourself lucky if you’re getting them that much bc they are an amazing brand!!

I love the Briogeo products, too. I wish they would include more.

I love Birchbox and was excited for this curated box. Unfortunately, my nail polish was completely dried out. I’m an ACE and have been a subscriber for several years. This is the first time I have ever reached out to customer service for any sort of replacement. They promised another polish with tracking number within ten business days. So far, nada. I’ve reached out a second time but have yet to hear back. A dried out nail polish isn’t the end of the world for me, but the lackluster customer service did surprise me. Everything else in the box, including the box itself, was stellar.

Very interesting! My polish arrived dried up as well. CS informed me that they did not have any more samples of the polish. (This was in Dec). After going back and forth, they sent me a full sized Wander eyeliner instead.

I had so much trouble getting that nail polish off.

I chose this box also. I think it’s been the best one I’ve gotten to date. Goes to show how well I’ve gotten to know your reviews because I piled my 3rd day hair up in a bun the other day and was looking for something to smooth it out with. No joke, I reached for that Oribe cream with the actual thought in my head “Megan would just run this through dry hair, so I’ma try it and see”. 😆 When I read your review, I was like, yeap, just like I thought.

Megan K.

Hahaha I love this. The real question is: Did you like it on dry hair? Have I led you astray? I hope not. <3

This was my box. Love everything. The serum is terrific. The lipstick is a fabulous color.

The lipstick was such a good addition to this box. If you want a backup and like MAC, I think Birchbox still has the MAC Lip Kit for sale. Its $35 and has 4 full size lip products, 2 minis, and a really cute bag. I reviewed it too if you want to peek, just search for Birchbox MAC

Great review, as always! I got this same box last month, unfortunately my perfume sample vial shattered in transit and there was broken glass everywhere and perfume on everything. Customer service only replaced the perfume sample. I carefully cleaned the broken glass shards off I’d everything to salvage the rest. Would have been an awesome box if not for that issue, since I really love the rest of the items.

My perfume bottle shattered too! They sent me a full replacement box. But all the items were different then this box.
