The Birchbox x M·A·C Cosmetics Lip Set Review

The info provided lists each item included this month with pricing and additional info.

M·A·C Cosmetics Prep + Prime Lip, 0.05 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $19.00

This is one of those items I always keep in my purse, especially in the cold months where my lips can use a little extra hydration and smoothing. It is also awesome for adding longevity to your lip color and creating the perfect base for more finicky shades that can lean towards spottiness. I have been using this for years and my only gripe is that there could be more in the tube.

MAC Frost Lipstick in 'Delish', 3 g - Full Size! Estimated Value $18.50 (This item was a limited edition and is now discontinued)

This was a limited edition shade that I have to admit I would have never even noticed at my fave MAC counter because I tend to be scared of "frost" anything. It can easily dive into terrible '90s makeup territory and I already fell for that trend once! I didn't expect much from this shade but I was really pleasantly surprised. It is a warmer copper with pink, gold, and purple micro-shimmer. It applies sheerly (thank goodness) and really is quite demure, just adding a super subtle shimmer and an extra layer of dimension to my naked lips. It also looks great layered with bolder matte shades. The finish is smooth and feels more like a satin/creme than a matte.

Just like my lips, but better.

MAC Matte Lipstick in 'Moxy', 3 g - Full Size! Estimated Value $18.50 (This item was a limited edition and is now discontinued)

This is another discontinued shade, but I honestly don't mind. MAC is always getting rid of my favorites (Good to Be Bad, RIP!) and these limited edition shades can be really spendy if you are searching for them online. That being said, I am freaking obsessed with this color! You know I love an obnoxious fuschia lip and this is IT. Is this matte shade fall and winter appropriate? Probably not, but that has never, ever stopped me before. A vivid shade like this just makes me feel so bold and creative. MAC has a really nice matte formula that isn't drying, but still has mad staying power and feels much easier to apply than a liquid matte color.

If I were a lipstick, I would be this lipstick.

MAC Matte Lipstick in 'Velvet Teddy', 1.8 g - Mini Size! Retail Value $12.00

Upon first glance, I thought this would be a shade that I would need to swatch then pass on to Marne. That girl can really rock a nude lip, whereas sometimes they leave me looking sickly. Well, Velvet Teddy is a cult favorite for a reason, and I actually think this looks great on me. It has enough pigment to look darker and more saturated than my normal lip color, but it is also pink enough to not look yellow against my fair skin. It was super easy to just glide on and wear, even without extra eye makeup to balance out a nude lip like I so often feel the need to do. And, it is that awesome MAC matte formula I know and love!

MAC Retro Matte Lipstick in 'Mixed Media', 3 g - Full Size! Estimated Value $18.50 (This item was a limited edition and is now discontinued)

This reminds me a lot of my other vampy MAC favorites: Diva, Rebel, and Good to Be Bad. It is sheer but buildable, deeply moody, and, frankly, a little work to apply evenly. You can see in the photo below that I struggled with consistent coverage. This was 100% remedied by using the Prep and Prime Lip first, but for the sake of photos I really wanted to showcase these lipsticks solo. This shade is, IMO, worth the extra step, especially for fall. I can see myself wearing this with a chic black turtleneck and a messy bun and looking much more stylish than I actually am. I also had success using this combined with lip balm, as it gives more of a sheer stain look.

This is with a few layers built up. You can see I had some issues around my lower lip line, but this was remedied with the primer. I also swatched a ton of lipstick this day so I had some redness from wiping shades away over and over!

MAC Lipglass in 'Lovechild', 2.4 g - Mini Size! Retail Value $12.00

Yaaaaaas! I have loved this shade for years! This is hands down one of my fave lip glosses of all time. I always keep a tube of this handy for that "no make-up, make-up" look I prefer. It is a plummy sheer shade with a subtle golden shimmer. The MAC Lipglass formula is super smooth and out of this world shiny, and I love it on naked lips as well as layered with other favorite colors. It is medium-bodied and not sticky, though I find it much longer-lasting than most glosses out there.

I always feel cute when I wear this shade.

Verdict: This kit was a total winner for me! MAC is my go-to lipstick brand of choice so getting 6 different products for under $40 felt like a steal. Though most of these were discontinued/limited edition shades (maybe a dealbreaker for some, though I don't mind), I am estimating the total value to land somewhere around $98.50, which is great for the price of this kit. I am happy to report that I legitimately loved each of the colors sent and found them to be both versatile and excellent representations of the range of this brand. If I could have made one change, it would have been the inclusion of the MAC Amplified formula, my personal favorite, but I am by no means complaining. This is an awesome assortment for any die-hard MAC fan or someone wanting to try out a selection of their shades and formulas, and at this price, it is an easy buy!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Thank you for writing this review! “Delish” looks great on you!

Personally, I prefer sheer (Lustre) or creamy (Amplified) formulas so I hope they come out with more sets like this.

I was going to use my $15 in Birchbox points to help offset the cost. However, all my points apparently expired on 10/25. I still bought it.
