Every month, Birchbox sends samples (and sometimes full-sizes) of new and exciting beauty products from top brands for $15/month. They allow subscribers to pick between a curated box (all samples revealed) or a single sample choice with the rest of the items arriving as a surprise. Birchbox is one of the original beauty subscription boxes and is a great way to discover new makeup, hair care, and skincare products without breaking the bank.

This review is of the 'You-Time' curated box.

Birchbox 'You-Time' Curated Box #2 Review - January 2020

This month's Birchbox came with a single info card that lists the products on the front, with a Birchbox Tip listed on the back.

Popmask Starry Eyes Indulgent Self-Warming Eye Mask - Estimated Value $4.00 (Buy a pack of 5 for $20)

I've received Starry Eyes in the past and find this self-warming eye mask very nice. I used this last night as I laid down to go to sleep. I just tore open the package which immediately activated the self-warming and I put the elastic bands around my ears. The only downside is that the mask slightly pressed against my nose, but I conked out anyhow so it must not have been too bad. The warming only lasts 20 minutes so there's no fear of having it on too long and at that point, it just becomes a sleep mask. Of course, since this is a single-use product, it's not very earth-friendly which is a bummer.

Pai Chamomile & Rosehip Calming Day Cream - Buy a full-size 1.69 oz. for $60.00

This is quite a nice day cream. I love chamomile and rosehip which means the scent is absolutely fantastic to me. It really did feel creamy and calming and it's supposed to repair the skin while reducing redness which I need! My skin feels incredibly soft after using this and I'm very tempted to buy a full size!

thisworks Deep Sleep Pillow Spray, o.17 oz. - Estimated Value $1.97 (Buy a full-size 2.5 oz. for $29.00)

I like to keep a little sleepy kit when I travel because I am finicky about my sleeping conditions. My kit always contains a sleeping mask, earplugs, and a pillow spray like this to set a nice calming mood in a place like an unfamiliar hotel room. Deep Sleep includes lavender, patchouli, and chamomile essential oils to bring it down and help me fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.

Juara Coconut Illipe Hand & Nail Balm, 0.27 oz. - Estimated Value $2.16 (Buy a full-size 2.5 oz. for $20.00)

Fantastic little hand and nail balm we have here. The texture isn't greasy or oily at all. It's the perfect amount of moisture without feeling slippery and gross. The scent is heavenly due to the coconut and this has come at the right time since I recently got my acrylics removed for good and am working on trying to restore my natural nails. I wish this sample was bigger!

Acure Seriously Soothing Biocellulose Mask - Retail Value $5.99

Put plainly- I love this mask. Biocellulose masks, in general, are MY JAM and this one is just delightful. Since it has a really interesting jelly feel to it, it comes sandwiched between two backings that you need to remove before putting on your face. Once that baby is on, it's like wearing a second skin. It doesn't budge and it's really comfy and moisturizing. After 10 minutes, I removed the mask to reveal the absolute perfect amount of serum to softly massage into my skin and be done with. My skin felt great and looked bright. A+ would purchase.

Bonus: Hush & Hush MindYourMind Dietary Supplement, 2 ct sample - Estimated Value $2.17 (Buy a bottle of 60 for $65.00)

Birchbox included a bonus packet of two capsules of Hush & Hush's MindYourMind which is supposed to help usher you to a restful sleep. It contains classic relaxing herbs like chamomile, holy basil leaf, tryptophan, and valerian root. The directions say to pop one about an hour before bed which I did. Sadly, I haven't had much luck with sleepy supplements (like melatonin or straight valerian root) in the past, so this sort of had the opposite effect on me.

Verdict: I really love the curation of this Birchbox since I'm a huge fan of sleeping and relaxing. All of the items were great, but the value just wasn't there on this one which is a huge bummer. Since the day cream didn't have a size I could find, I wasn't able to calculate a value but it shouldn't be more than a few dollars, Without it, this box only adds up to $16.29 which is only a dollar and change over the cost. If the sample sizes were a bit bigger, this would have been a much better value. It's sad that this didn't add up well since it may be one of my favorite Birchboxes ever.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? If you subscribe to Birchbox now, be sure to check the image on the sign-up page. I picked this one. Maybe I misread but I thought the mask was a 5 pack. Didn’t think the value was worth it.

I remember the description saying 5 masks as well 🤷🏻‍♀️

Birchbox just doesn’t offer much value. I just canceled my subscription and I was only paying $10. I prefer to spend those $10 on add ons for my Ipsy bag tomorrow. They usually have sets of 2 face masks for $3 so that’s better use of my money!

I also chose box 2 and enjoyed it. The value is definitely in the curation and not sample sizes. Unfortunately, birchbox samples are so tiny!

I am an ACE so I got this box for only 10 bucks which pays for the masks and the other items were little extras. I am okay with breaking even because I love masks so they were fun to try. I don’t think I would have been happy if I had paid $15!
