Glow Recipe Makeup Prep Mystery Box Review – December 2019

Glow Recipe is a K-beauty skincare brand powered by fruit! It used to also be an online retailer for other K-beauty products, but in the past year, the website changed to exclusively sell Glow Recipe products.

Glow Recipe offered a limited edition Black Friday mystery box, and you could choose between three boxes (with each box coming with a different, guaranteed Glow Recipe item). This is a review of the Makeup Prep Mystery Box, which is no longer available for purchase.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

About this Limited Edition Mystery Box

The Box: Glow Recipe Black Friday Makeup Prep Mystery Box

The Cost: $40.00

The Products: A Glow Recipe product, two full-size K-beauty products, and a sheet mask

Ships to: The US for $6.95 (but during Black Friday this shipped free with a coupon code!)

Glow Recipe Black Friday Makeup Prep Mystery Box Review

We received a small booklet with more information about the brand.

Every order comes with two free samples! I actually just tried the retinol eye sleeping mask sample, and now the full-size version is calling my name.

Every Black Friday purchase also came with this sample of the Blueberry Bounce cleanser. For my thoughts on this, scroll down just a few more lines.

Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser, 160 ml - Retail Value $34

There were three different mystery box options, and while the “Makeup Prep” theme of this box wasn’t calling to me, when I saw that this came with the full-size Blueberry Bounce cleanser, I absolutely knew this was the box I was getting. I have used numerous samples of this, and I am stoked to finally own the beautiful full-size jar. It really is a gentle cleanser, but the gel formula still gives my face that clean feeling. My skin is never left feeling stripped or dry, and the gel formula glides across my face when mixed with a bit of water. Whenever I get minis of this cleanser, I always store them in my gym bag because it's is my favorite cleanser to use after a good sweat session (and I am excited to have this bad boy officially on my bathroom sink!).

Whamisa Chai Tea Eye Cream, 0.67 oz - Estimated Value $25.99

This eye cream has a solid ingredients list- it has a high concentration of rooibos tea extract along with ingredients like mushroom, propolis, and turmeric. I liked using this as a morning eye cream because it was hydrating without being too heavy, and I appreciate that it is unscented, too. I couldn't find this available for sale online from a reputable seller, but according to this page it used to retail for $25.99,  which is why that is my value estimate.

J.One Haart Mermaid Glow Color Lip Tint, 0.8 oz - Retail Value $19

This lip balm is made with nourishing oils like sweet almond oil, and I love that this gives a soft pink tint to my lips that overall makes them look glowy and soft.

Here I am wearing it in an after-work selfie before running errands. I love that it added a hint of shiny color that helped me feel more put together on this makeup-free day.

Make P:rem Layering Firming Mask - Estimated Value $7 (based on the retail value of last year's layering mask)

I first discovered the Make P:rem layering masks through last year's Glow Recipe Black Friday mystery box, so seeing this type of mask again made my heart sing. It genuinely makes me look like Michael Myers, but it is also truly one of my favorite sheet masks. You start with a juicy sheet mask made of a thin fabric that hugs the contours of your face with ease, and then you layer on top a thicker mask that has two sets of ear loops(!!). The design wraps this around your face and chin, and I literally was able to cook dinner while wearing this with no problems. Did it firm my skin? I honestly have no idea, especially since my skin doesn’t really sag. But my face was definitely hydrated with a soft glow after I removed this, and I was more relaxed from the experience of wearing it.

The Verdict: I have been looking forward to this year's Black Friday mystery box ever since I finished reviewing the one from last year! The Blueberry Bounce cleanser is a rock star, and I used the Make P:rem mask the same day this box was delivered. The eye cream and lip balm balanced out this box well, and while I am curious to know what came in the other variants of this box I think the Makeup Prep version was the right choice for me. Value-wise, this box has a total value of $85.99. Take that with a grain of salt considering some of the difficulties I had in finding the products, but I think I am pretty close considering this box had a promised value of over $80.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you order today? Unfortunately, this box is no longer available for purchase.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $40 (thanks to the Black Friday deals I was able to nab free shipping) and I calculated a total value of $85.99. That means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Blueberry Bounce Cleanser: $15.81
  • Whamisa Eye Cream:  $12.09
  • J. One Haart Lip Tint: $8.84
  • Make P:rem Layering Mask: $3.25

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

Ordered this Mystery Box (only ordered 1 box, or type of box) and received the identical items. I was surprised at the incredibly nice shade of natural lip pink, because the color of my lip balm was coral, I think? Anyways, I gave away everything except for the lip balm, because I was curious how it looked. After I tried it, I told my mom about it and she wanted it, so I gave it to her. Now, I have wound up having given away everything. 🙂 I liked everything, it was just fun sharing, until I realized that I had nothing left. oops.

Hi Jessica- I really appreciate this review. I got one of each of the mystery boxes, but didn’t know what was in each “box” because I the box was just crammed full of stuff. 😊 I’m curious if this year’s boxes were a bit of an inventory purge. I had the same problem finding the value on the eye cream. Also, I received 2 rose mists (one for each of the other boxes) and they expire in June 2020. The normal manufacture to best by span is two years. It is still a tremendous value with the full size Glow Recipe products; I would love to hear what other thought.

Vic

I purchased the hydration box and recieved an organic flower hydration toner, superfood vitamins moisture boost moisturizer, and a vitamins E mask along with the watermelon sleeping mask. I thought it was decent and all stuff I will use.

Thanks, Vic! I believe then that the SOOTHING box had

1) Pink Juice Moisturizer 60ml
2) Whamisa Rose Mist 100ml
3) leegeehaam GROW ampoule 15ml
4) Vitamin E Mask.

It makes sense that the soothing and hydrating would have duplicates and they stated it clearly, so I knew it was a gamble. I was also satisfied with what I got and liked that everything was full size.

Tiffany

Bummed I skipped this, but looking forward to next year.
