Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 items list

Here's the list of what items I picked this time around.

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 bag

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 bag 2

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 bag 3

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 bag 4

Black & Gold Fabric Bag - Estimated Value $10 (based on similar items)

I really like the chic look of this makeup bag! The top is a black and gold knit and has a faux leather bottom third. It's lined inside, too. I wasn't sure if it would be very big but it easily held everything that came in my kit and had room for a little more - that means it can easily carry everything you need for a full-face look.

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 bb cream

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 bb cream 2

Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 - Retail Value $36

This tinted moisturizer has been a long-time love of mine, but I haven't repurchased in quite a while. I've been experimenting with other brands, but now I'm reminded just how much I love this. It's light coverage that's just enough to even out my complexion, it's hydrating which is perfect for my dry skin, and I love that it has SPF. This is their fairest shade and it is a more neutral undertone that matches my complexion well.

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 concealer

Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12-Hour Concealer - Retail Value $25

This concealer is heavy duty. The formula is thick and I find it easier to work with if I apply to my fingertip and let it warm up for a moment. This can really cover a multitude of sins. It works well to conceal dark circles from new-baby-sleeplessness or breakouts.

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 mascara

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 mascara 2

tarteist Lash Paint Mascara - Retail Value $23

I've never tried this mascara from tarte before, so I snagged it to try. I really like mascaras that have a spiky silicone wand because it helps me feel like I can really get in between my lashes to separate and lengthen them while applying. This mascara works well! It doesn't clump at all, and I had no issues with it smudging or flaking.

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 eyeshadow

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 eyeshadow 2

tarteist Metallic Shadow in Whiskey- Retail Value $14 (currently on sale for $10)

I'm usually the last person to go for individual eye shadows, but a blogger I follow wears this shade every single day and it looks gorgeous on her. I've been wearing only one shadow color instead of doing a whole multi-shade look lately to simplify getting ready. This "Whiskey" shade is a really pretty bronze. The formula is very pigmented and it applies and blends out easily. I did notice a small bit of fallout while applying so just be sure to tap off excess before putting to your lid. You can see it swatched below.

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 lipstick

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 lipstick 2

tarte Color Splash Lipstick in Surf's Up - Retail Value $21

After years of faithfully using matte liquid lipsticks, I've ventured back into cream lipsticks. Especially for wintertime, when my dry skin is extra dry, having my lips look hydrated and not matte like the rest of my thirsty face just looks better to me. This shade, "Surf's Up," is a mauve and would look great on anyone. It's hydrating, pigmented, and easy to wear. You can see it swatched below, too.

Tarte Create Your Own Kit November 2019 serum

tarte Mermaid Skin Hyaluronic H2O Serum - Retail Value $42

As you may have gathered after all my talk about my dry skin so far, I love skincare that really helps with that. I haven't used a whole lot of skincare from tarte before so I was excited to check this out. The first thing I loved about it was the large size and the pretty packaging. Then I tried it on, and I was a little underwhelmed. I use a lot of oils so I'm used to my skin feeling dewy and soft after soaking up an oil. This product is more of a water/gel consistency that absorbs right away, and I can't tell if it's too lightweight to help or if it just leaves zero residue and I'm just not used to it. Personally, I think it needs a moisturizer over it. I've been using it for a couple days but I'm looking forward to using it longer and seeing if the vitamin B5, marine plant extracts, and hyaluronic acid help change my skin for the better through the winter.

And here I am wearing everything.

The Verdict: These tarte Create Your Own Kits are not to be missed! They're one of my all-time favorite beauty box releases of the year (they release twice - usually in May and November). It’s refreshing to have them offer your choice of each category rather than having it be a total mystery like typical subscription boxes, and that I can choose to use the discount to try new-to-me tarte products so I'm not risking paying full-price, or take the opportunity to stock up on my favorites. And they're all full-size! The value is fantastic for the products you get. This box cost me $63 including free shipping, and my items add up to a retail value of about $161, or ~$171 if you include the bag. I am absolutely happy with that!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you order today? No, tarte only offers these Create Your Own Kits twice a year! (Last year and this year, they released in May and November, so I would expect the next one in May 2020.)

Value Breakdown: At $63 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Bag: $3.68
  • BB Tinted Moisturizer: $13.26
  • Concealer: $9.21
  • Mascara: $8.47
  • Eye shadow: $5.16
  • Lipstick: $7.74
  • Serum: $15.47

Alternatively, the $63 breaks down into $9 per item.

Hi Haley!
I’m a little confused on your review of the h2o serum- is it marketed as an oil? My understanding is that it’s a serum that’s supposed to go under your moisturizers or facial oils (I usually use facial oils as the last step in my routine- do you do it differently?)
Just curious!

Hmm its definitely not marketed as an oil. It says right in the name Serum. Lol. It is a hydrating serum but a serum nonetheless. Also, on the Tarte website it says to layer this under your moisturizer, like a serum.,

Jessica, no, it’s not marketed as an oil and Tarte’s website recommends using it under a moisturizer. I guess what I was trying to say was that I didn’t feel like my skin was moisturized after it alone at all. The packaging says to apply to feel instantly hydrated skin but honestly it felt like it either dried on top of my skin or just absorbed too much to change anything. Hence, I feel I need to try it for several days to see if it changes anything about my skin itself because I didn’t think it added any hydration to my skincare routine in one try.

This is the first time in years I skipped this deal and I regret it. Would love to try that tinted moisturizer. I’ve never seen it included in the options before.

I have that lipstick from a previous MYO bag and it is so pretty!

I do think you have to use an oil or moisturizer over the serum. It’s there to help retain moisture but it’s not occlusive enough on its own. I have always used it as a first layer, no matter what brand.

Exactly what I was about to say! HA has to have something to suck moisture out of … oil, heavy moisturizer or humidity from the air (use humidifier). Otherwise, it will suck water out of your skin and make it even more dry (the opposite of what you wish to accomplish)

Reply ButtonReply

Rachel

Yes! This is especially true any time humidity is low. If you don’t use something over it, it can actually dry out your skin instead of help moisturize it. HA shouldn’t be used in low humidity situations at all unless you’re using something over it to lock moisture in. It works by absorbing water from the surrounding air, but if there’s too little moisture in the surrounding air (like many locations in the winter), it’ll absorb water from your skin instead and dry your skin out horribly if used alone.

Jackie

Exactly, I wish items containing HA would say to use a moisturizer over it since it can defeat the purpose if you don’t.

Every time I see the reviews on this i tell myself to figure out my foundation shades. And then I forget. And then I feel like I can’t order. Got to get my act in order, this looks amazing!

This is the second time I have purchased this create your own beauty kit. Both times I was very happy with the products I selected. Previously I was not familiar with Tarte products other than their mascara. Now I am a devoted fan.

Two of my items were missing. Customer service was fast to reply. They sent my replacement foundation within 4 days. The lipstick color I ordered was out of stock, but they gave me similar color options. That was just shipped. I didn’t mind the color swap on the lipstick because it wasn’t the hero item. I was impressed that they replaced the missing items quickly and easily though. With some companies it is such a hassle.

Wow – the entire look is fantastic on you! So pretty! I especially love the eyeshadow. It has the right amount of shimmer and makes you sparkle. The lip color is rad, too. Looking great! I wanted to do buy one, but had no clue what to buy. I need to do some research before their next sale on products and shades so I’m ready regardless of the options they have to select. Thanks for the review. I always enjoy reading your reviews.

This was my first time creating a Tarte box. I loved it. I chose the same bag, and it’s classy and quality. What a fabulous opportunity to try new Tarte products (all are new to me) at an unbelievable price. You can bet that I’ll be watching for May.

I usually buy these when they come out and I bought one this time as well. I would’ve loved the bag that you have but it didn’t come out until after I made my purchase so I ended up with a gold bag that I chose from the 3 that were available. Most of these products will just be back up items for some of my favorites. I even ended up getting the pink powder brush and then just today I realized I already had it. Looks like my teen daughter will be getting it for Christmas and I know she’ll love it because it’s adorable. Perfect timing too since I just started letting her wear make up.

I was supposed to get that same BB SPF moisturizer in my box, but they sent me the full coverage SPF foundation instead (in a shade that won’t work for me). They only refunded me $9. Really disappointing. Since most of the items in the box are sale items, anyway, the real value of this box to me is getting to try an expensive foundation. I didn’t agree to pay $54 for 5 items that I probably would not have otherwise purchased.

Reply ButtonReply

Jackie

I agree, the hero item in this box is the foundation. Otherwise, I wouldn’t buy the box.

Joy B.

I guess I’m just confused by what you mean. All of Tarte’s foundations are $39 and under (most of them are on sale for much less than $39). If you think the foundation is the only reason to buy the box why wouldn’t you just buy the foundation?

Not trying to be rude just genuinely curious. It sounds like both of you are saying that this box is not worth the price without the foundation. To me that says you don’t really have any interest in anything other than the foundation. Because Marion stated that the whole reason for buying the box was to “try an expensive foundation”. That says to me this is not your every day foundation that you were going to purchase anyway and decided, “hey why not get some more items to try at a discount, at least I know I’ll get my foundation out of it”, but instead was a chance to try a foundation that might not end up working for you anyways and so was a gamble from the start. In which case interest in trying the other items as well seems to be the only reason to roll the dice at this price. So why purchase it if this is the case?

Joy B.

You paid $63 just for a foundation?

Reply ButtonReply

Marion

I paid $63 for 7 items. They only sent me 6 items.

This is the shade of Tarte lipstick I received in my Allure box this month and I love it!!!!! I had never tried their lipstick before and I’m so glad I got the chance. It’s really nice.

These colors are very pretty on you. You made great picks! That eyeshadow is really gorgeous. 😊

This is my second year getting this, and I love it! Got one for my teen too, when they extended the offer. Thanks for the heads up/reminder: I hope they do it again!
