Skylar november 2019 perfume club subscription box review

Skylar Scent Club
4.2 overall rating

Skylar Scent Club is a monthly perfume subscription that includes one limited-edition clean, hypoallergenic, and cruelty-free scent.

The founder, Cat, became especially conscious of product ingredients while working for The Honest Company and quickly realized she couldn't find a truly clean perfume she enjoyed. She also realized tons of other perfume lovers were looking for the same thing, so Skylar was born!

November 2019 Skylar Scent of the Month: By Firelight

perfume book with fire at night design next torollerball

This is my fourth month of this subscription and I am still SO impressed with the gorgeous packaging. Each rollerball scent "book" lives in a beautiful row on my desk, and I only wish I had signed up earlier so I would have scents 1-3 to complete the collection. Inside the book is a note on the fragrance itself as well as layering recommendations with other Skylar scents.

Each month Skylar selects a charity to donate a portion of their Scent Club proceeds to. This month it is the Movemeant Foundation.

At Movemeant Foundation, we empower girls and women by providing them with resources, opportunities and experiences to use physical movement as a tool to build confidence and self-worth.

It's worth noting that Skylar scents are hypoallergenic, phthalate-free, paraben-free, and cruelty-free. They are also made in the US (in Los Angeles, to be exact!) and have no synthetic dyes. If you are someone who is super ingredient-conscious and wants more info, check out the Skylar Dirty List and their perfume philosophy.

Let's check out this month's scent!

Scent Notes: Pinion Pine, Fresh Vetiver, Sweet Amber

"Light and shadow waltzed around the room. As the fire crackled, she felt comfort and warmth."

I love fire-inspired scents, especially as the days start to get colder and colder. As someone who truly loathes winter, cold-season scents are one of the little luxuries that make it more bearable, like hot chocolate, and cashmere sweaters! I was certain I would like this scent before I even opened it because I absolutely love vetiver. It has a complex earthiness that is so attractive to my nose. Paired with pine? I knew this was a winner. What I wasn't expecting was for this to remind me so much of the beloved Skylar September Scent, Wanderlust! This is a good thing, as I am pretty obsessed with that fragrance. They share notes of evergreens and complex earthy notes. The main difference is that the September violet note is gone and in its place is a firey glowing amber. That spicy amber takes center stage in this month's rollie, but that undercurrent of woods is beautifully obvious, providing a grounding effect for what could easily be too sweet or honeyed without it. Together they form a lovely contradiction of earth and heat, which is, of course, exactly what fire is.

I applied each of these scents to one wrist and sniffed throughout the day. You would never mistake the two fragrances for one another, but there is some deep down DNA that certainly intertwines them. I expect that if you enjoyed Wanderlust as much as I did, you will love this molten golden version very much too. It is a great fall to winter fragrance and, like all of the Skylar scents, is surprising, somehow familiar, and altogether new.

Skylar perfumes usually feel lighter than so many others due to the natural and clean ingredients used to make them. This one has a ton of staying power and great sillage on my skin. It lasted all day! This could be totally different for you, as skin chemistry plays a huge role in these factors.

Verdict: Skylar continues to delight me. I feel like each month my verdict is always glowing, and this is for good reason. I really, really enjoy this subscription. It is such a delight for anyone who loves perfumes and if you are looking for clean scents? Bonus! This month's scent was perfect for these chilled days between fall and winter. It smelled complex, glowing, and feminine. I am utterly charmed by the creativity of the Skylar team to create such unique but totally wearable scents that feel so timely and special.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

You convinced me to sign-up this month! I’ve been wanting to try this, and this sounds great. I might gift a sub for my besite for Christmas.

I am clearly not in the majority here but I thought this scent was absolutely dreadful. I really like last month’s scent. I was so pumped to see the pine scent listed here but I can only smell the pine for about a second and then it is just awful. I like unusual scents but this is not one of them, I would not even use this scent as a room scent. I am glad some people are enjoying it but I for one, cannot.

For me it went on with an almost cloyingly sweet honey smell I didn’t like and dried down to what I thought was a spicy sandalwood type scent that wasn’t sweet and I liked a lot better. On the whole though, I probably won’t reach for it again. I never picked up the pine smell at all.

I agree with your description, Lauren. All I smell is honeyed amber in the opening. Not my favorite, as I tend to avoid sweet scents. It mellows into something much woodier and more to my taste over time.

What I will say—I am a migraine sufferer and many sweet scents bother me. I’ve never had a problem with ANY Skylar scent. The company offers great options for those who are scent sensitive.

Great description! I subbed to this box too and her fragrances are unique and addicting. Like this new scent, it smells like Christmas to me, a scent I don’t normally like but it’s so unique that I end up obsessively smelling this scent on my wrists throughout the entire day. There’s something about it….

Totally! 🙂 Thanks again!

Alisha

September, October and November have been some of the best scents I have ever owned. They are so unique in such a good way!

Great description of the scent 🙂 I love reading your thoughts on Skylar’s fragrances like how I love reading Ragan’s sciencey take on sheet masks! ….. both those types of products would be the hardest for me to review! 😀

Megan K.

Thanks Luna! I review both and sheet masks are really hard for me sometimes! Fragrances come easier, but I always worry my nose is off compared to another readers or maybe I am imagining things sometimes, haha!

Luna

LOL! Well, just like with skincare, with perfume there’s always potential for any of us to have a different “experience” with the same product, so it’s still fun to read your experience and true feelings on perfumes… they practically read like a story 🙂 My reviews on perfumes, would just be like… “this one smelled really pretty and woodsy. I liked it! Anyone who likes woodsy scents will like this one too!” and with sheet masks, “this one made my skin really soft and smooth! I liked it! Anyone who likes soft skin will like this one too!” Ya, I wouldn’t make a good reviewer with those products. lol!!!

Do they only offer rollerballs?

Luna

For the subscription they only include rollerballs, but in general they also sell perfumes in bottles. 🙂
