Modern Skyn Apothecary Bath & Body Ritual Box October 2019 Review

I actually discovered this subscription by receiving some of Modern Skyn's products in RosePost Box. When I looked them up for writing that review, I found they had a subscription box. I signed up just to see what it was like and I was really happy with the first box so I asked if I could review the subscription here. I think this subscription does several things right that some competing boxes need to work on a little; we will get to those at various points in this review.

This month the inner cardboard box, while still environmentally friendly like last month's, has a logo printed on it. I think the ribbon is a nice touch, as well, and I've put it in my craft item stash for future use.

Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Booklet Front Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Booklet Back

The box came with an information sheet that lists the items, some use suggestions, and prices at which you can actually buy the items in their shop.

Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Lip 1 Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Lip 2

Pumpkin Spice Latte Lip Polish (1.2 oz) - Retail Value $12

This is rather high on the oil, as you can see. So give it a good stir before first use. But, I have to say, I'm looking for high oil in a winter lip scrub -- my lips dry out so much but sometimes I also need a little help getting rid of all my lipstick and this helps with both. It's in a nice fall flavor/scent, as well (this one is limited edition). This is a sugar scrub so it won't hurt if you get it in a cut.

Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Soap

Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Loofah

Absolute Herbal Cleansing Bar Soap - Retail Value $12

This can be used for face and body but I am more of a body person when it comes to bar soap. Anyway, I'm a fan of the Modern Skyn Alchemy bar soap formula and this one is no exception. Also, although this one contains neem, it's not super noticeable in the overall fragrance blend. (This is a good thing.) This also comes with a slice of loofah that you can set the soap on, in the shower, to keep it dry between uses. I love that we got something biodegradable instead of a plastic soap holder. (The soap is also usually packaged just in *recyclable* paper bags.)

Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Salts 1 Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Salts 2

Soaking Mineral Salts (16 oz) - Retail Value $28, Listed Value $32

I soak my feet in a heated foot bath on occasion and I like to use bath salts there. These are perfect for that. They have sea salt and Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) as well as some essential oils for scent. If I am ever super sore after exercise, I will take a whole bath in them, but usually my feet are hurting at the end of a long day and I think this product helps.

Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Pump Bottle

Hand and Body Cleanser (8.2 fl oz) - Retail Value $20, Listed Value $28

I think the value discrepancy here on the website versus the information card may be because they have moved to a new bottle style and are trying to sell off product in older bottles so it is listed as less expensive on the website. At any rate, I have actually been using this as a hand soap. It seems much less drying than what we buy at Target for this purpose, and less drying is exactly what I want at this time of year. It also smells absolutely wonderful (the scent I received was jasmine and neroli).

Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Oil

Vanilla + Clove Huile de Parfum (0.33 oz) - Listed Value $40

This is a new product -- Modern Skyn Alchemy's first ever perfume oil. And I love it. I have not had the best experiences with perfume oils in the past (i.e., I always thought them rather weak) but this one had good sillage and very good longevity and now I want these folks to come up with some more scents. However, for what it's worth, this scent is excellent and works quite well for me.

Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Cream 1 Modern Skyn Alchemy October 2019 Cream

Oat Milk Facial Creme (2 fl oz) - Retail Value $40, Listed Value $45

This was kind of fun to poke at -- it felt like marshmallow fluff or something. But it was also really gentle (oats are known to soothe irritation) and absorbed into my skin without leaving lots of residue. That makes me happy. But it is also moisturizing when I need it most (it's finally getting cold and dry where I live), and I love that it is only lightly fragranced and contains no artificial dyes.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $157 for the October 2019 Modern Skyn Apothecary Bath and Body Ritual Box. That meets the promised $100+ value as well as the promised number of full-sized products (5-8). What I can say after having received this for several months is that item types are not duplicated month-to-month, so I haven't run into a problem of having too much of any one kind of item, but if you are worried about product accumulation there are bi-monthly and quarterly boxes available as well. I thought this was a nice seasonal box in terms of fragrance choices, level of moisturizing (and/or lack of stripping oils from the skin), and the like. I like the packaging that minimalizes the use of plastic and also that you can buy almost all of the items in their shop (except some new releases).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Boxes ship by the 20th of the month so it may be too late to receive this one.

Sadly, it seems this isn’t a box that is popular enough to garner regular reviews/spoilers. I was thrilled to find a box full of organic handcrafted skin and bath goodies. I typically make my own, but with Covid I have been crazy busy at work. I signed up for Modern Skyn today… I can hardly wait!

I just used the products from the November box, and OMG it’s amazing. This is my new favorite sub. Please keep reviewing. I love your reviews, Ragan.

Lovely review. Do you happen to know if this was the fall box or the winter box?

Ragan

It said Q4 on the information sheet but whether that counts for their purposes as fall or winter, I’m not sure. I’m assuming it’s the last quarterly box of the year which isn’t exactly the same as answering your question but it’s as close as I can come up with.

I agree with the others- I’m on product overload right now- but the next box I’m trying will be this one. Marshmallow Fluff-like moisturizer sounds wonderful! The variety looks good too. Can’t wait!

If I wasn’t already on major product overload, mostly from my monthly box and frequent purchases from Fortune Cookie Soap Company and morning past year and a half of Margot Elena, I would definitely subscribe. It sounds like such a great variety of scents and products for an extremely reasonable price. I’m going to keep track of this one and subscribe once I get some of my stash given away and sold.

Hi Ragan, thanks for the review. However, I’m confused. The title says Modern skyn apothecary, but the box says Modern skyn alchemy. It seems modern alchemy has a website (although, I didn’t see a sub box) and modern apothecary just goes to Crate Joy. Can you clear that up for me please.
Thanks

They are the same company, the subscription has one name (apothecary) and the company has the other (alchemy). The products in the box are typically in the company store but you do have to subscribe through Cratejoy.

@Ragan – this isn’t the right page to post this, but I wasn’t sure how long you monitor older postings (i.e., cat box reviews) for comments. Anyway, I just came across something that might be useful for Angus – it’s a “soft” recovery cone. (It’s the first I’ve ever seen of this type, and I wasn’t sure if you were aware these existed.) search for “Alfie Pet Noah Lion Dog & Cat Recovery Collar” and you’ll see what I mean. It doesn’t allow for as much peripheral vision as the clear cones, but it definitely looks more comfortable (and entertaining for us humans).
